1. (a) Explain about “Dot convention” in the case of mutually coupled circuits.
(b) Explain briefly “How you can use mutual inductance principle to the trans-
former”. [8+8]

2. (a) Derive an expression for measurement of power and p.f. in 3-φ system with
balanced load using two wattmeter method.
(b) Two watt meters are connected to measure the input to the balanced 3-φ
circuits indicate 2500w and 500 w respectively. Find the p. f . of the circuit.
i. when both the readings are positive
ii. when the latter reading is obtained after reversing the connection to the
current coil Draw the connection diagram and phasor diagram of the cir-
cuit. [6+10]

3. (a) Why does the field winding of a d.c series machine has less number of turns
than that of a dc shunt machine.
(b) What do you mean by the critical speed of shunt generator
(c) The magnetization curve of a d.c shunt generator driven at 800rpm is as under

If the resistance of the shunt field is 50ohms, determine the additional resis-
tance required in the shunt field circuit to give 240V at a speed of 1000rpm.

4. (a) Explain the necessity of a starter to the motor.


(b) A 220V shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5V. The armature current
at starting must not exceed 40A. If the number of sections is 6, calculate th
values of the resistor steps to be used in this starter. [4+12]

5. (a) What is a transformer ? How does a it transfer electric power from one circuit
to the other? What is the function of the core?
(b) A 40KVA 3300/240V, 50Hz 1-phase transformer has 660 turns on the primary.
Determine
i. Number of turns on the secondary.
ii. The maximum value of flux in the core.

iii. The appropriate values of primary and secondary full load currents.
Internal drops of the windings are to be ignored. [8+8]

6. Explain about Delta/Delta connection of Transformers in detail A500 -KVA, 3-


phase 50 Hgs Transformer has a voltage Ratio (line voltages) of 33/11 KV and
is Delta/Star connected. The resistances per phase are : High voltage 35Ω, low
voltage 876 Ω and the Iron loss is 3050 W. Calculate the efficiency at full load and
one-half of full load respectively

(a) at unity PF
(b) 0.8 PF. [16]

7. (a) Define % regulation and how do you find regulation of an alternator experi-
mentally.
(b) A 3-phase, 4 pole star connected turbo alternator has a cylindrical rotor. The
reactance and resistance per phase of winding is 2.5 Ohms and 0.15 Ohms.
The alternator has terminal potential difference of 6600V When delivering a
current of 250 Amps. Calculate
i. The generated EMF at 0.6 PF lagging.
ii. The regulation at 0.6 PF lagging. [10+6]

8. (a) If, in a laboratory you were required to measure the total power taken by a
three-phase balanced load, show how to do this, using two wattmeters. Explain
the principles of the method. Draw the phasor diagram for balanced load case
with a lagging power factor and use this to explain why the two wattmeter
readings differ.
(b) The load taken by a three phase induction motor was measured by the two-
wattmeter method and the readings were 860W and 240W. What is the active
power taken by the motor and at what power factor is it working? [8+8]

1. Calculate the unknown resistance R and the current flowing through it when the
current in the branch OC is zero.(figure 1) [16]

2. (a) Explain the behavior of an a. c. circuit containing resistance and capacitance
with the help of phasor diagram and wave forms.
(b) A capacitive reactance of 4 ohm is connected in series with a resistance of 5
ohms. The series circuit is connected across a 200 V, 50HZ supply. Find
i. the capacitance
ii. impedance
iii. current
iv. voltage droop across the resistance
v. reactance drop and
vi. power factor. [8+8]

3. (a) With neat sketches, explain the construction and functions of the various parts
of a d.c. machine.

(b) Calculate the emf generated by a 6 pole lap wound armature with 65 slots and
12 conductors per slot, when driven at 1000 rpm. The flux/pole is 0.02 Wb.

(b) The effective resistance of a 2200V, 50Hz, 440KVA, 1-phase alternator is 0.5
Ohms. On short circuit a field current of 40 Amps gives the full load current of
200Amps. The EMF on open circuit with the same field excitation is 1160V.
Calculate
i. Synchronous impedance
ii. Synchronous reactance
iii. % regulation at 0.707 PF leading [8+8]
8. (a) Why is spring control to be preferred to gravity control in an electrical mea-
suring instrument?
(b) The coil of a moving coil meter has resistance of 5Ω and given full scale
deflection when a current of 15mA passes through it. What modification
must be made to the instrument to convert it into
i. an ammeter reading to 15A
ii. a voltmeter reading to 15V? [8+8]

1. Calculate the unknown resistance R and the current flowing through it when the

2. (a) Explain vector notation of alternating quantity and its significance.
(b) The values of the instantaneous currents in the branches of a parallel circuit
are as follows:
i1 =5 sin 346t; i2 =10sin(346t+π/4);
i3 =7.5 sin(346t+π/2) i−4=8sin (342t-π/3)
Express the resultant line current in the same forms as the original expression
and determine the r.m.s. value and the frequency of current. [8+8]

3. (a) Give a brief note on lap and wave windings.


(b) A lap connected d.c. generator has 8 poles and 120 slots with 8 conductors in
each slot. If the flux/pole is 0.035Wb
i. find the emf generated when the speed is 600rpm.
ii. What should be the speed of rotation if the induced emf is to be 500V?

4. (a) Explain DC motor principle and its working
(b) A 250v shunt motor on no-load runs at 1000rpm and takes 5A the total arma-
ture and shunt field resistances are 0.2 Ω and 250 Ω respectively calculate the
speed when loaded and taking current of 50A if armature reaction weakens
the filed by 3%. [6+10]

5. (a) Explain in detail the O.C., and S.C., tests of a single phase transformer and
their use to find regulation of a Transformer
(b) Open circuit and short circuit tests on a 5 KV A, 200V /40V, 50 HZ 1- phase
Transformer gave the following Tests.
O.C. Test: 200 V IA 100 W (L.V.Side)
S.C. Test: 15 V 10 A 85 W (H.V. Side)
i. Draw the equivalent circuit referred to Primary
ii. Calculate the approximate regulation of the Transformer of 0.8 P.F. lag
and leading. [8+8]

1. The field winding of a d.c. electromagnet is wound with 960 turns and has resistance
of 50Ω. When the exciting voltage is 230V, the magnetic flux linking the coil is
0.005 wb. Calculate the self-inductance of the coil and the energy stored in the
magnetic field. [16]

2. (a) Describe a method of measuring the power consumed by an inductive circuit


by using three voltmeters
(b) To measure the I/P power to an inductive load, three voltmeters has been
used. The readings indicate by three voltmeters are as follows:
i. voltage across the non-inductive resistor connected in series with the load
=70V.
ii. voltage across the inductive load = 60V.
iii. Supply voltage = 120V. Value of non-inductive resistance = 28Ω.
Calculate
i. impedance of the load
ii. impedance of the combination
iii. power absorbed by the inductive load
iv. total power absorbed and
v. power factor of the load and of whole circuit. [6+10]

3. (a) In a d.c machine the total iron loss is 8KW at its rated speed and excitation.
If the excitation remains the same, but speed is reduced by 25% the total iron
loss is found to be 5KW. Calculate the hysteresis and eddy current losses at
i. Full speed
ii. half the rated speed.
(b) Describe in detail the various losses occurring in a d.c. generator. [10+6]

tify the answer with appropriate derivation.

(b) A double wound 1- phase transformer is required to step down from 1900V to
240V, 50Hz . It is to have 1.5V per turn . Calculate the required number of
turns on the primary and secondary windings respectively. The peak value of
flux density is required to be not more than 1.5 wb/m2 . Calculate the required
cross sectional area of the steel core. If the output is 10KVA . Calculate the
secondary current. [8+8]

i. The synchronous reactance;
ii. The full- load regulation with power factor 0.8 lagging. [8+8]

8. (a) Describe with the diagram the construction of a repulsion type moving iron
instrument with particular reference to the means used for
i. deflection
ii. control
iii. damping.
(b) A moving iron voltmeter in which full scale deflection is given by 100V, has
a coil of 10000 turns and a resistance 2000Ω. Calculate the number of turns
required on the coil of the instrument is converted for use as an ammeter
reading 20A full scale deflection. [8+8]
