4 Abstrak
The objective of this research is to know the functions and reasons of the students
in using Basa Sunda as the students’ mother tongue or first language (L1) in EFL
classroom (English as a Foreign Language Classroom). This research uses
descriptive qualitative method. The data is collected by doing two times
observations and four times interviews with the students at the first grade of SMK
Negeri 1 Tasikmalaya. The functions of mother tongue by the students in EFL
classroom that are categorized into six functions by Shadi Afzal (2013) are used
by the researcher, to ask each other clarifying the questions, to express their
frustration concerning their lack of understanding, to L2 which correspond to
already known words in L1, to use language to process complex concept, and to
discuss meaning while evaluating written task through shared discussion. In
interview section, the researcher used the reasons of the students in using mother
tongue by Shadi Afzal (2013), low of proficiency in the L2, the naturalness of
using L2 to do certain jobs, shyness in using L2, and lack of interest in learning
L2. Based on the acquired data, the students used those six functions in teaching
learning process and found one function that is to clarify pronunciation.
