The pressure vessel codes define two important ‘classes’ of stress. A About Secondary stress

stress by some margin will result in failure. By contrast, secondary
stresses are those arising from geometric discontinuities or stress ANSYS memory
concentrations. For an increasing external load, at any point, both management
primary and secondary stresses increase in proportion to this load, until
the yield point is reached. But secondary stresses are termed self-limiting RE CENT COMME NTS
by the ASME code: that is, once the yield point has been passed locally
around the stress concentration, the direct relationship between load and
stress is broken, due to the reduced post-yield stiffness (stiffness or E  AR CHIVE S

of the material. This is in contrast to primaries (sometimes termed ‘load
controlled’ stresses) that will continue to increase in overall magnitude, February 2015

stress-strain curve, until failure.

In a region away from any discontinuities, only primary stress will arise. April 2013

The secondary stress cannot arise alone however – at a discontinuity, the

secondary stress will be superimposed on the underlying primary stress. CATEGOR IE S

Secondary stress:
Thermodynamic
Any normal or shear stress that develops as a result of material Uncategorized
constraint. NOTE This type of stress is self-limiting, which means that
local yielding can relieve the conditions that cause the stress, and single META
application of load will not cause failure. (Secondary stress can be in can
be both membrane and bending stress.) Register

2. Gross structural discontinuity WordPress.com

Definition of Gross Structural Discontinuity

Gross : total, whole, entire, large.

A discontinuity which increases the stress or strain which affect a
relatively large portion of the structure. It significantly affects the
overall stress or strain distribution.

Examples of Gross Structural Discontinuity

(i)                  Dished head Connection to the cylindrical shell

(ii)                 Flange connection to the cylindrical shell

(iii)               Nozzle connection to the cylindrical shell

(iv)              Junction between the shells of different diameters

(v)                Junction between the shells of different thicknesses

Saddle supports and lifting lugs cause bending stresses to occur across
the vessel wall thickness and so are not considered to be local structural
discontinuities but gross discontinuity.

Local Structural Discontinuity

A discontinuity which increases the stress or strain which affect a

relatively small (local) portion of the structure. It does not significantly
affects the overall stress or strain distribution.

Examples of Local Structural Discontinuity

(i)                  Oil hole

(ii)                Merger of knuckle and crown radius

(iii)               Groove

(iv)              Small dent

(v)                Small scratch

Weld toe” and “Small fillet radius” – local structural discontinuities.
