2. Cavitation of pump
In pump carrying liquids a phenomenon known as cavitation occurs. Low pressure
regions occur in the flow at points where high local velocities exists. If vaporization
occurs due to these low pressure areas then bubbles occur, these expand as they move
with the flow and collapse when they reach a high pressure region. Such formation and
collapse of bubbles is very rapid and collapse near a surface can generate very high
pressure hammer blows which result in pitting, noise, vibration, and fall off in the pump
efficiency.
4. What is the reason if the centrifugal bilge pump cannot lower the bilge well?
Normal running of the pump, configuration of the pipeline.
5. How will the current of the motor be if the discharge valve of the centrifugal
pump is closed?
As centrifugal pump is not positive displacement pump, there is no work done when the
discharge side is closed. That’s why the current will be very low or tend to zero if discharge side
is closed.
1. Sketch and describe the centrifugal pump and clearly explain the function of the
volute casing.
Centrifugal is created when the rotating impeller increases the velocity of the
liquid thus allowing the volute casing of the pump to convert this increased of
velocity into increased of pressure.
The velocity energy of the liquid is discharged when it flows out of the impeller
and it is converted to pressure energy between the casing and discharge port.
The liquid is suctioned continuously as it is made to flow from a point of low pressure
inside the impeller at high speed to out of the impeller
The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is
accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a volute casing, from
where it exits..It accommodates the gradual increase in quantity of fluid that builds at
the discharge from the circumference of the impeller,
