pump

1. Centrifugal pump cannot discharge, what will you do?

Check the discharge valve is closed or not. Check there is blockage in the discharge side
or not. Check the motor is running normally? Check the primer is in good condition?
Check the suction side is leakage? Check the impeller of the pump.

2. Cavitation of pump
In pump carrying liquids a phenomenon known as cavitation occurs. Low pressure
regions occur in the flow at points where high local velocities exists. If vaporization
occurs due to these low pressure areas then bubbles occur, these expand as they move
with the flow and collapse when they reach a high pressure region. Such formation and
collapse of bubbles is very rapid and collapse near a surface can generate very high
pressure hammer blows which result in pitting, noise, vibration, and fall off in the pump
efficiency.

3. What are the possible reasons of pump vibration and noise?

Misalignment of the pump and the motor, wear out of mechanical parts, chocked or
damaged impeller, viscosity of the liquid

4. What is the reason if the centrifugal bilge pump cannot lower the bilge well?
Normal running of the pump, configuration of the pipeline.

5. How will the current of the motor be if the discharge valve of the centrifugal
pump is closed?
As centrifugal pump is not positive displacement pump, there is no work done when the
discharge side is closed. That’s why the current will be very low or tend to zero if discharge side
is closed.

1. Sketch and describe the centrifugal pump and clearly explain the function of the
volute casing.

Centrifugal is created when the rotating impeller increases the velocity of the
liquid thus allowing the volute casing of the pump to convert this increased of
velocity into increased of pressure.

The velocity energy of the liquid is discharged when it flows out of the impeller
and it is converted to pressure energy between the casing and discharge port.
The liquid is suctioned continuously as it is made to flow from a point of low pressure
inside the impeller at high speed to out of the impeller

2. Safety procedures in use when working on auxiliary pumps

 Permit to Work
 Use right PPE
 Isolate the pump from power supply
 Put warning tag
 Isolate the area
 Suction and discharge valves should be securely closed
 Ensure to relieve pressure in pump casing
 Ensure to use the correct and good tools
 Ensure that the area is well ventilated and has good lighting

What could cause a centrifugal pump not to pump?

 Obstruction (valves being shut, suction strainer blocked)
 Faulty in priming system
 Damage of sealing ring
 Leaking gland
 Air leak at suction line
 Too tight a shaft
 Incorrect rotational speed
3. Explain how the following would affect the performance of a centrifugal
pump:
a) Worn rings
the pump delivery pressure will be down, capacity reduction
b) Worn/corroded impeller
Excessive vibration, delivery pressure will be down, capacity reduction
c) Worn shaft
Excessive vibration
d) Leaking gland
Loss of suction, Capacity reduction (as pump will be drawing air)
e) Loss of speed
Lower output which will affect the pump efficiency
f) Poor air extraction
Failure to deliver caused by loss of suction, can lead to cavitation and damage the
pump.
1) Sketch and describe a centrifugal pump clearly explain the function of the volute
casing.
Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by the conversion of kinetic
energy to into potential energy.

The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is
accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a volute casing, from
where it exits..It accommodates the gradual increase in quantity of fluid that builds at
the discharge from the circumference of the impeller,

92) State the probable causes of a centrifugal pump vibrating.

Air in pump. Hole in impeller. Worn bearings and wear rings. Worn shaft. Misalignment. Too
much greece on bearings
