Chapter 1

Introduction

Social networking sites like facebook have become a number one


attention now of many people and this leads to words on the mouth of every
students, they want to waste their time in opening their facebook account,
according to (Khan,2018), facebook was created to provide a networking
medium for people especially students to communicate with others.

In International social networking sites has become a global consumer


phenomenom. According to (Kuss & Griffiths, 2011), more than 500 million
users are active participants in the facebook and many of students addicted on
facebook.

In Philippines more than 28 million using facebook. According to


(Delapina, 2012), even though many social networking sites preceded it,
facebook is the current biggest social networking sites with over 28 million
users.

According to (Mucia & Asis, 2015), in Mindanao almost daily since


majority of them using social networking sites. And recommended that the
university of southern Mindanao (USM) must regulate the proper usage by the
students of social networking sites in the campus.

We need to come up this study because many students in plnhs has been
already addicted on facebook that’s why we want to know the possible effect on
their personal characteristic of every student in Pablo Lorenzo national high
school so that the students can be aware of being addicted on facebook.

Research Question

Overall Objectives of this phenomenological study is to know the effect


on their personal characteristics of being addicted on facebook mostly in the
students. The purpose of this study is to know the effect on their personal
charactiristics of every student in Pablo Lorenzo national high school, This is
the research questions that will guide this study are:

1. What influence you to use facebook?


2. How does the use of facebook affects your personal characteristics?
3. What is the advantage and disadvantage of using facebook?

Theoretical Lens

This theory provides a framework for explaining observations. The


explanations are base on assumption. The basics of different emphasis on
facebook addiction to students of personal characteristics is that this study is
supported by the following theory.

According to this theory, facebook is one of the sites that has become the
center of attention today for people because many young people have come to
social networking sites because of facebook, in this study there is a possible
effect on personal characteristic on every students (Mahmood & Farooq, 2014).

This theory examines how it can affects peoples especially to students


because it can affect there learnings and their personal characteristic of every
students (Sherman, 2011).

Significance of the study

In this research is important its benefits the following:


To Teachers – will benefit from this study from the findings and its
recommendations there of they would be able to keep track and assess the
students profile, behavior and academic performance.
To Parents – will be able to coordinate with the teachers to improve and
maximize the capacity their parental guidance of their childrens.
To Students – will be aware of the adverse side effects of the excessive
use of facebook and be able to asses them selfs as to how their personal
characteristic and behavior will be affected and how deal with them.

Scope and Delimitation


The respondent of this study are selected junior students of Pablo Lorenzo
national high school and is only limited within the grade 8 students both male
and female between age 13 to 14 years old including all sections, we do not
include other year level to this study because of their self control in term social
networking sites, this aims to identify the students who are addicted in facebook
affecr their personal characteristic.

Definition of Terms
To make it easier for readers to understand, we want to define the
following terminology of how each one uses this research.
Facebook – this facebook was created to provide easy networking
medium for people especially to students (Khan, 2018).
Addiction – it illustrate a campusive ace of causing harm to the person in
which the person is out of control (Tracy, 2016).

Literature Review
The purpose of this study is to determine the factors of Facebook's
students and its personal characteristics.

Factors in influencing students to use facebook

The influence of personality traits on the facebook addiction (Hwang,

2017), this study aims to know the factors that affect with students who
addicted on facebook, Social networking sites or facebook have a great

possibility that this will affect the personal charactecristic of every students,

study findings that awareness is negatively associated with Facebook addiction,

while extraversion and neuroticism are positively associated with Facebook

addiction.

The factors of using facebook in students

Using facebook belonging to social networking sites is said to be primarily

done by those who have access to the internet, whether on the computer or on

their smartphone. According to them, Filipinos are the very least in Facebook, a

typical Filipino who has access to the internet has spent nearly four hours on

Facebook in just one day, it has also led to the dissemination of news and

information that is not clear and trustworthy basis for just making propaganda by

some politicians. As a result, it is likely that it will affect the personal

characteristics of its users including students who use it (Pascual, 2017).

According to (Vashishtha, Ahuja & Sharma, 2017). Nowadays almost

young people use facebook, many young people have become addicted to

social networking sites because of the overwhelming use of facebook, it has

been discovered that there is a impact on the personal characteristics of every

young person, social media one of the reasons


why many young people are addicted to facebook and it has great

consequences on their personal characteristics, according to the possibility that

it can cause depression among young people because of facebook there the

rude and destructive comments that one can impact on their personal

characteristics (Canua, 2018).


Chapter 2

Methodology

This chapter highlights or discusses how the study was conducted. It

outlines the strategies which were used to collect and analyze the data. It

consists of the discussions of the research design, research locale, research

participants, research instrument, data collection, trustworthiness of the study,

role of the researcher, ethical consideration, and data analysis.

Research Design

A phenomenological qualititave research design was followed to conduct

this study. This is used provide as an in-dept explination of the experiences and

viewpoints of the participants in facebook addiction there are seven steps that

come prises this method, this frequently used in phenomenological studies, the

seven steps to be used are transcribing and translation of interviews next is

extracting significant statements, organizing the aggregate formalized meanings

description of the phenomenom, identifying the fundamental structure and the

last one is validating exhansive description with each participants.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted in davao city, davao del sur to be précised,

the data of the study will be collected from grade 8 students of Pablo Lorenzo
national hign school DDF village barangay mandug, davao city through in-depth

interview to be participated by 5 stundents and also another 5 students for focus

group discussion. The depth interview will be conducted to the grade 8 students

in Pablo Lorenzo national high school ang the focus group discussion will be

conducted in Pablo lorezno national high school, we need to conduct this study

because many students in Pablo Lorenzo has been already addicted on

facebook.

Pablo Lorenzo national high school belong in davao city. Davao city is a

highly recognized city in the Philippines. The city has total land area of 2.443.61

kilometers squared, making it the largest city in the Philippines. Barangay

mandug is located here in davao city mandug is located in buhangin district of

davao city with a population of 13.594, this represented 0.85% of the total

population of davao city.

Research Instrument

The primary instrument in this study will be a guide questionnaire that will

be given to each participant. The questionnaire and will be interviewed while

being recorded. A permission will be secured from the participants before the

interview to make sure that they will allow us to record them for documentation.
Research Participants

The participants of this study will be the grade 8 students of Pablo Lorenzo
national high school in junior high, there will be 10 selected students within the grade 8
year level 5 male and 5 female between the ages of 14 to 15 years old. The participants
are chosen who are frequent absences. All of the informants are students of Pablo
Lorenzo National High School in Mandug, Buhangin, Davao City.

Data Collection
Before the collection of data, a permission will be secured from the
principal office to allow the researchers. In conductiong the study in the school.
During the Data Collection, we first make an interview guide questionnaire and
ask our teachers to validate the questionnaire. Then, we will select the
participants of our research and interview them one by one. Before the
interview, consents will be given to the participants to make sure their parents
knowledgeable about the research that they wil be participating. A permission
will be secured from the participants during the interview to allow the
researchers to record the participants. After the interview, the data collected will
be transcribed verbatinity then it will be analyzed.

Data Analysis
This chapter explores descriptive and interpretive approaches to
qualitative research .This includes the formulation of the problem, Data
collection, the specifics of sampling, Data analysis in descriptive/interpretive
qualitative research, generation of categories, and extracting and interpreting
the vmain findings. Decriptive-interpretive method goes by many by which
various common elements are mixed and matched according to particular
researchers predilection. Afeter we have gathered all the needed data, we
transcribed it verbatimly so that the recorded data will turn to a more
understandable data, so that we can analyze it and formulate a more reliable
and clear data.

Role of the Researcher


As a researcher at grade 11 students in Pablo Lorenzo senior high
school, we still have to pass through many years before reaching the profession.
We are confident as a researcher that we are the main instruments for data
analysis. We will devote our time, effort, and knowledge in exploring on the
student who addicted on facebook.

Trustworthiness of the study


To address the credibility in this study, we will send a letter of permission
to the school head of Pablo Lorenzo National High School and a letter of
consent will be given to the participant of this study, before they will undergo an
in depth individual interview. The credibility and confidentiality of this study is on
the hand of the researcher. The researcher will do the very best to protect the
participants and the data collected from them. Rest assured that there is no
leakage of information from the participant.
Ethical Consideration
We, as a researcher should be oriented and sensitive in respecting an
individuals human rights and ensuring that will not be related in the course of
participations. All of the participants will be treated in accordance to the ethical
guidelines of the study.
In this study, the research send a letter of permission and also send to the
school head of the Pablo Lorenzo National High School and the senior
curriculum head teacher before they will undergo an in-depth discussion. The
researchers will explain to them their answer will not be shared to anyone that
they will remain confidential.
