Preparation to become a good English Debater

Agung Soegihin, 2019

What is debate?

It is not simply determining what is right/wrong

It is not simply digging somebody’s mistake

 A battle about finding the most just and effective solution to a problem.
 Different groups of people offering their products(proposal/solution) towards a
problem given.
 The winning team is the one who offer the most proper and effectively
compatible to overcome the problem. This will be decided by the
adjudicators(judges)

Sistem NUDC

Menggunakan British Parliamentary (BP)

Used in World University Debating Championship (WUDC)

 Seleksi tingkat perguruan tinggi

 Seleksi tingkat wilayah regional
 Seleksi tingkat nasional (setiap 8 tim terbaik dari semua regional di Indonesia)
Format British Parliamentary (BP)

 Only 1 motion is announced for each round (Motions are impromptu).

 All teams have 15 minutes to case build started right after the Motion Launch

 There are 4 teams in each room, divided into 2 sides (Government – Opposition)

 The 2 sides of the debate is divided into 2 half (Opening – Closing) teams.

 The government must support the motion.

 The opposition must negate the motion and present an alternative

 Each speaker has 7 minutes to speak.

Motion
 is the topic, a full propositional statement that states what the debate is/shall be about.

 Usually proposes a policy, against the status quo, or affirming the virtue (goodness) of a state or
condition.
 Motion is expressed as
“This House Would…”
“This House Believes That…”
“This House...”
 “The House” refers to all people present at the debate, or any governing body that may
suit the motion. Example: the UN, the US Government, or Indonesian Government.
 E.g. THW Nationalize Go-jek

 A Government team must defend the motion, and the Opposition team must negate the motion.

Definition

 Giving definition does not mean you have to translate each word of the motion based on

 True and may be always, but not important or
 Even if ; assuming their argument can work, why involve unacceptable implications
