5E’s Detailed Lesson Plan

in Science-5

I. Objectives:
1. Compare the rate of transmission of sound in solid, liquid and gas
2. Create a song and sounds by tapping the tables top, stomping their feet and
clapping their hands
3. Instill the importance of sounds in our daily life

II. Subject Matter:

A. Subject Matter: Sounds
B. Reference: Science for Active Learning 5 by Delia C. Navaza, Lilia G. Vengco and
Jojo L. Potenciano
C. Science Concept: Sound is produce by vibrating objects that travel as wave
called longitudinal waves.
D. Science Processes: Communicating, Observing, Analyzing, Creating
E. Materials: Tarppapel, Coil Spring
F. Values Integration: Cooperation

III. Learning Activities/Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

A. Engagement
1. Daily Routines
2. Energizer

(The teacher will show a logo of Pizzahut, KFC

and Mcdonalds.)

What can you see in the pictures?

Logos of Pizzahut, KFC and Mcdonald.
Can you make a song out of that pictures?
(Learners will try to compose a song using the
pictures or fast food chains name.)
How about we’ll try it this way…

Pizza hut, Pizza hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken

and a Pizza hut
Mcdonalds, Mcdonalds, Kentucky Fried
Chicken and a Pizza hut

What do you think? Will you sing it with me?

(Learners will sing the song with the teacher.)

Let us try to sing it again with action starting

with a low and soft tone as if we are
whispering to a little bit louder.
(Learners will sing the song with the teacher.)
Did you have fun?
Yes, we are.

3. Motivation

That’s good to know!

I have an idea! Let us make this afternoon

happier! Are you with me?
Yes, we are.
I will divide the class into three groups.
First group – tapping of the tables top
Second group – clapping of hands
Third – Stomping of feet

As I call your group number, you will do the

assigned task I gave you.

Is it clear?
Yes, it is.
(The teacher will randomly call each of the
group.)
(The group being called will then do their
assigned task.)
Thank you for your cooperation, class!

B. Exploration
1. Presentation

By stomping your feet, clapping your hands

and tapping your tables top, what do you
create?
We are able to create sounds.
That’s right! But… How do stomping,
clapping and tapping creates sounds?
Who has an idea?
(The pupils will share their thoughts.)
2. Activity

Let us figure out if all of your answers are

correct by having an activity called ‘Pass the
Message”.

Our activity is divided into three parts.

First, all of us will spread out circularly. Then I
will pass a message to the person right next
me, and he/she will pass it to the next person
until the message reaches the last.

As for the second and third part of the

activity, we will still be passing a message but
in the second part, we are a little bit close to
each other and in the last part, we are in
compact.

Take note, I will be using a timer to know and

record the time we finish the activity. So we
better hurry and be as fast as we can.

Are my instructions clear?

Yes, it is.
(The teacher and the learners will do the said activity – Pass the Message.)

(After the activity, the teacher will tell to the

class the recorded time.)
C. Explanation
1. Discussion

Going back to our first activity, you said

earlier that by tapping a table top, clapping
our hands, stomping our feet we are able to
create sounds.

Aside from those, there are still lot of activities

in which we can make sounds like beating a
drum with stick or even by plucking a guitar.

But do these activities produce the same

sounds?
No, they don’t.
That’s right! With that, we can say that
different activities produce different sounds.

However, there is only one way to produce

sound. What do you think it is?
It is through vibration.
That’s correct! If there is a back and forth
movement of an object, vibration is present.
It is the reason why when we clap our hands,
we are able to make sounds.

(Sounds are produce when there is a

vibration or back and forth movement of an
object that travels as waves called
longitudinal waves.)

Let us discuss further what longitudinal waves

are.

Longitudinal waves act like a coil spring.

As I push the coil spring towards the other

side, there is a back and forth movement in
the coil spring. With that, we can say that
vibration is present.
Also, you can notice that some part of the
coil spring are partially closed together and
slowly move farther apart.
The area where the waves are closed
together are called Compression and the
area where the coils spread apart is called
Rarefaction.

Sounds waves travel in different speed and in

different medium.

The medium could be a solid, liquid and gas.

If you can still remember, the particles in a

solid is in compact or very close together,
that is why sounds travel quickest in a solid.
And if we will look in the particles of a liquid,
they appear slightly farther apart compared
to solid. Thus, sound energy takes a little
longer to travel.
While in gas, the particles are spread out and
hence the waves travel slowly.

We can relate this to our activity earlier – the

Pass the Message.
Does anyone of you know how and why we
can relate the transmission of sound to the
said activity?
(The learners will partake their ideas.)
As we do the activity, we recorded that the
message reaches the last person fastest
when we are in compact or acts like a solid
than when there are spaces between us.
As for instance, when we spread out and do
the activity, the transmission of sounds are
slow as if we are gases.

D. Elaboration
1. Generalization

Did you understand the lesson class?

Yes, we did.
If that so… I have here a question mark, while
singing the song, “Sino kaya ang sasagot?
Sasagot… Sasagot… Sino kaya ang sasagot
sa katanungan ng guro?” you will pass this
question mark to the person right beside you
and the person who is holding this when we
stop singing will be the one to answer my
question.

Questions:
1. How do objects create sounds? Objects create sounds when there is a back
and forth movement.
2. Give one activity in which we can We can create sounds by stomping our feet.

Good job! Give yourselves five claps.

E. Evaluation
