Nestled in the Moorabool shire between Elaine and
Scotsburn is the tiny hamlet of Clarendon, and three-years
on from the bushfires in December 2015 the community
now has a place to gather.
Sitting on the Midland Highway you could be excused
for not knowing it was even there, but hold an opening
for the new community centre, and people come out of
the woodwork.
Over 60 Clarendon residents and official guests parked
their cars at the tennis court recreation reserve and walked
across the dry, parched and crunchy grass for the official
opening of the new Clarendon Community Centre. A
meeting place that is long overdue after the Hall, next to

“I was here in December 2015 and out of the ashes (of the
Scotsburn fires) is the work the Committee of Management
have done here today; it doesn’t soothe the events of 2015
though.”

at festival

Obtaining money or goods by deception is a
criminal offence and Ballan Autumn Festival
was a target for thieves on Sunday 17 March.
Ballan Police OIC Sgt Michael Kearnes is
asking attendees to check their bank account
transactions and credit card statements,
after criminal activity involving what Police
believe to be stolen credit card numbers and
details, were used in a series of fraud offences
at a Ballan supermarket on the Sunday of the
festival.
“We do have CCTV footage and a number of
witnesses to the offences”.

For over 35-years she has been
the first face to greet visitors at
St Brigid’s Primary School, but
Lin Bowers will soon be walk-
ing out the gates one last time.
Ms Bowers has been the sec-
retary at St Brigid’s Primary
School in Ballan for over three
decades and recently an-
nounced her retirement, fin-
ishing at the end of the school
term in April.
Ms Bowers said she’s “quite
excited” to know this chapter
is closing and is “really looking
forward to the future with [my
husband] John.”
“I’m just going to chill out and
relax. We do have plans fur-
ther down the track, but noth-
ing concrete as yet,” she said.
As for what she will miss the
most, Ms Bowers said she will
“miss the children”, having
seen generations of students
pass through the school.
“Every day is different. Even
though you’re doing the same
work each day, it is different,
because the children are just so
gorgeous,” she said.
Lin bows out
“I also work with some won-
derful teachers, I will miss that
contact,” she said, joking that
“I’m sure they are never too far
away, if I need a fix I’ll just go
into school!”
Since arriving in Ballan in
1975, Ms Bowers has contrib-
uted to many facets of the
Ballan community; from the
Ballan Tennis Club, the local
Mother’s Club, to the Gordon
Parish - the latter making up a
“big part” of her life.
As for what draws her to be so
active in local clubs and events,
Ms Bowers said that “it’s just a
wonderful community.”
“It’s lovely to walk down the
street and know people, say
hello, have a smile and talk to
people,” she said.
“It’s a wonderful community
here in Ballan. We feel part of
the community now, so it’s re-
ally quite special.”
Lin will be farewelled at an af-
ternoon Mass at 1pm on Friday,
5 April, at St Brigid’s Church,
Ballan (96 Inglis Street).
The service will be followed

Ralph reunited after
Rove retrieved

The Mathers are finally complete again.
Another emotional reunion took place between Barham
residents Lauren, Lachy and George Mathers, this time with
their dog Ralph, last Wednesday, March 20.
Moorabool Shire Pound reunited Ralph the Maremma with
his family, who again travelled down to Victoria to ‘retrieve’
their missing pup.
Ralph was miraculously found in Korweinguboora, 13 kms
from where Rove the Golden Retriever -and front-page star
(MN 12 March) - was found in early March.
Rove and Ralph went missing on the Australia Day long
weekend from their home in Barham, NSW.
After weeks of searching both in-person and through digital
connections on Facebook, thanks to micro-chipping Rove
was finally located in Bolwarrrah, 250km from home.
After unconfirmed sittings in Koondrook, NSW, Ralph was
finally found eight-weeks later.
“We are totally shocked to get Ralph back as well, and in
perfect health,” owner Lauren Mathers told the Moorabool
News.
“We are so thankful for the wonderful animal community
out there and the Moorabool Shire council that have looked
out for our boys and kept us in their minds. Without everyone
coming together we would still be looking for both of them,”
she said.
Ms Mathers mentioned the importance of microchipping,
and that the family would appreciate any information about
anyone who may have picked up the dogs and taken them
away from their home.
“It was awful not knowing what had happened to them
for so long, if they’d been taken, shot, attacked by another
animal or just become lost on their way,” said Ms Mathers.
“Not knowing is the worst, but there’s hope out there for
other families who have lost their dogs. Don’t give up,” she
said.

23 January, and were last week reunited
some 250 kilometres from home.
Originally lost from Barham in NSW,
Rove was found at Bolwarrah, 15km
from Ballan and reunited with his
owners at the Moorabool Shire Council

As fate has it, Lauren and her husband,

happened to be in Melbourne on Tuesday
afternoon when they got the call.

with Lauren searching high and low

Myrniong road, Myrniong on Tuesday 19 March. The
vehicle left the road on a bend and hit a telegraph pole before
crashing through a farm fence. The driver was uninjured
and issued with a penalty notice for careless driving.

male in relation to a criminal damage committed at the
Ballan Bendigo Bank on or around Saturday 9 March. The

The cross-country course now
takes in more land at the southern
end of the reserve, and the show-
jumping and dressage arenas
will be transformed at a new part
of the development, they will
also be granted new clubrooms.

Phil Jeffrey said Council has so
far spent $180,000 on the cross-
country course and earthworks,
this includes new jumps for all
levels of the discipline.
“The Pony Club has committed a
$20,000 contribution to the overall
development, that also includes
the sand arenas and pavilion
which are yet to be constructed,”
he said.
“The next stages haven’t gone to
tender yet.”
President BMPC Simon Karp
said the new course has 120 new
jumps.
“We had a slight setback a month
ago, where upon arrival of our new
jumps, unidentified persons have
stolen a park bench jump and the
transport contractors trailer to cart
it away. To date this very large
jump has not been recovered,” he
said.
“With that aside, the Pony Club
is extremely excited they now have
one of the best equestrian facilities
in the state, that will be able to be
utilised by all of the community,”
he said.
There is no State Government
funding to date for the equestrian
facilities.
The BMPC will hold a PCAV
and Open Horse Trials event this
Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March
at the BMRRR, showcasing their
newly constructed cross-country
course.

Dear Editor,
The prospect of an amendment to allow
household waste at Calleja’s tip (Maddingley
Brown Coal) is very real and may be beyond
even Council’s control .
In the early 1990s when a company I man-
aged purchased the assets of Amcor in South
Maddingley, a large part of the holdings was
zoned “Reserved Residential”.
The gently sloping land to be used for hous-
ing, within walking distance to the train
station, existing high school, the local light
industry area, and northerly views over the
valley.
At a chance meeting with an employee of
our business one evening, I learned that the

after I met with the school’s founder Graeme

buildings on it (one of which was an early
chaff mill) which could be refurbished for

The site was half as big again as the Halletts
Way site and with its outlook over the valley,
proximity to Maddingley Park, local swim-

sense.

I received a phone call from the then shire
engineer Mr Dennis Murphy one morning,
which was a shock.
He informed me that Mr David White, a
Minister in the then Labor government,
had UNILATERALLY by ministerial decree
rezoned all the reserved residential land,
and virtually the southern half of Bacchus
Marsh, to RESERVED MINING. The then
council was powerless to do anything about
it.

Don’t be surprised if some Moorabool
Councillors may support this

and don’t be fooled that a politician won’t
rubber stamp it like they have before.
It might be a fair call for Moorabool council
to consider this matter at say Maddingley
Park so most of the population can attend to
hear Councillors’ views.
It will be a sad end of this town as we know
it should this be approved.
The air, water and groundwater conse-
quences of this proposal are frightening.

A 6-year old male golden retriever and
his human family have been apart since
23 January, and were last week reunited
some 250 kilometres from home.
Originally lost from Barham in NSW,
Rove was found at Bolwarrah, 15km
from Ballan and reunited with his
owners at the Moorabool Shire Council
Pound on Wednesday morning.
Lauren and Lachy Mathers were easy to
locate.
As fate has it, Lauren and her husband,
with 3-year old son George, just
happened to be in Melbourne on Tuesday
afternoon when they got the call.
Rove and his mate Ralph, a Maremma
sheep dog, both wandered off in Barham
with Lauren searching high and low
ever since, even taking to social media
In an emotional and tearful reunion
at the council pound, Rove’s tail never
stopped wagging.
“If you find a dog, take it to the local
pound or vet,” said owner Lauren.
Rove was handed into the Ballan police
station by a Bolwarrah resident where
he was then taken to the vet to treat
head and neck wounds and was put on
medication.
It appeared over the last 6-weeks Rove
suffering deep cuts to his head and
throat.
Ralph is still missing with unconfirmed
sightings in the Koondrook area.
Microchipping for dogs and cats is a
state government requirement, and dogs
and cats over the age of three in the
Moorabool Shire must be microchipped
and registered.

Doctor demise in Ballan

Ballan has lost another popular GP, Dr
David Llewellyn and all seems hush hush.
In a move so swift that most patients were

and goodbye, Dr Llewellyn resigned from
the Ballan District Health and Care operated

if we can find out the reasons behind Dr
Llewellyn’s seemingly sudden departure,

Mahkah Hine appeared

Hine told the court he was
“pleading not guilty” and

The alleged co-accuser,

the day of his sons hearing.
Mahkah Hine was released
on bail and is set to appear
this Friday on March 29
in the Bacchus Marsh

STUBBLE BURNING TO COMMENCE MONDAY 25 MARCH IN
MOORABOOL SHIRE
Schedule 13 permits to burn during the Declared Fire Danger Period will be issued
shortly to landowners who have made an application to conduct controlled burning
within the shire.
These permits are only issued for agricultural purposes to assist farmers in the removal
of weeds and stubble.
The permits are issued with strict conditions and heavy penalties apply to permit
holders who breach these conditions.
Stubble burns may be inspected by Victoria Police, the CFA or Council officers.
Smoke may be visible throughout the Shire.
Lighting a fire without a permit during the Fire Danger Period can result in fines over
$19,000.00 and or 12 months imprisonment.

Speeding to hospital,
but not in an ambulance

A four-year-old’s life was in the hands of
his father with his actions leading him to
disobey road rules, in order to make sure his
son was rushed to a hospital.
Gregory D’Cruz appeared before Magistrate
Ron Saines at the Bacchus Marsh court on
Friday 8 March, to face a single charge of
speeding along a Lilydale road.
It was on September 9 last year that D’Cruz
was travelling west along the Maroondah
Highway when he was snapped on a fixed
camera travelling at an alleged speed of
82km/h in a 50km/h zone.
When asked by Magistrate Saines about
his circumstances at the time of his offence,
D’Cruz was ready to reply with a written
testimony on his electronic tablet.
“I was speeding because I was rushing my
son to hospital. He had a fever of 40 degrees
and appeared dehydrated,” D’Cruz said.
“The hospital closest to our hotel was closed

kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”
A local not-for-profit organisation is
bringing that mantra to life, organising
educational, creative, recreational and social
activities for the retired or semi-retired over-
55s in the Bacchus Marsh and surrounding
areas.
With over 100 branches in Victoria, the
Bacchus Marsh branch started in 2008 and
currently has well over 100 members and at
present offer 21 courses.
Activities range from anything from book
clubs, a garden group, IT help, science and
maths classes, to learning a language.
“One of the most important aspects of our
activities is the socialisation that it offers
and the chance to meet likeminded people
of similar interests, and to participate in
activities which you may not have,” said
secretary Helen Brown.

The accused went on to tell Magistrate
Saines of his wife’s medical state, having
suffered from a stroke in previous years and
being unable to drive, so it was important he
kept his licence.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Lisa
Schoemaker said,” as a parent, we’ve all been
in that situation.”
“There are other options to get a child to a
hospital in my submission,” she said.
“It was 32km/h in excess of the speed limit,
it was a built-up retail area, a major highway
in Melbourne, but there was no interference
with safety,” Magistrate Saines said.
“I understand the parents were motivated
with some level of anxiety to get their child
to a hospital,” he said.
Magistrate Saines dismissed the charges
against D’Cruz, with no penalty warranted.
“Age should not be a barrier to ongoing
social learning; several of our members are
well into their 80s.”
Group member David Leach, who has
been part of U3A since it began, said the
organisation allows for “engagement, to
challenge the mind and develop skills.”
Mr Leach, who is in his 80s, is a regular in
the play-readings and science classes.
“It’s all about the third age of life, to allow
stimulation and still be able to think,” he
said.
The organisation is also able to accommodate
if you have a special skill that you would like
share or teach others.
Membership fees are $30 per annum. Once
you become a member you can attend any of
the activities as often as you like, but some
classes have restrictions on size.

second quarter goals for Port Adelaide
against Melbourne at the MCG last Saturday.
The Power went in as underdogs with up to
six new faces in the line-up before charging
onto a 26-point upset over last year’s Prelimi-
nary finalists.

A healthy crowd of the local cricket faithful
has witnessed Bacchus Marsh triumph by six
wickets in Sunday’s GDCA McIntyre Grand
Final at Maddingley Park.
The Bulls had to overcome some nervous
moments with the bat on day two after
looking in some bother at 4/125, chasing 205
for victory.

dressing room with Mili Sepala and ‘Skeeta’

Ballan’s 1st XI Captain,
Michael Snaith has received
the highest Ballarat Cricket
Association award for the

‘Bernie Davey Medal’ at the
Association Awards night
held last Wednesday at the
Ballarat Golf Club.
He follows previous club
winners of the Medal
including, from most recent,
Cam Dunne, Noel Heafield,
and Chris Mullane (dual
winner).
Michael won the prestigious
award convincingly with
24-votes, voted by the BCA
Umpires at the games. His
nearest rival was Russell
Sharp from Buninyong on
12-votes followed by Justin
Murley from Coronet City
with 11-votes.
Ballan’s Ben Loughnane
polled 9 votes to finish a
credible 8th place.
Michael not only won the
Bernie Davey Medal but
also took out the 2nd Grade
Champion Player with
834 points. These points
are worked out from the
individual player’s season
statistics; wickets, runs,
catches & run-outs.
Michael’s season ended up
with 327 runs off the bat
with an average of 25.15,
