The effects of mines/ERW

Over the years, mines/explosive remnants of war (ERW) is troubling people’s welfare,
protection, and development in the ASEAN region. People are unaware of the consequences
and troubles that they may face from this mines and ERW and it remains as a threat for
them to lead a peaceful life. To familiarize, mine is a device that designed to destroy or
disable enemy targets by direct blast effect starting from combatants to vehicles and tanks
as they pass over or near it by hiding it beneath or on the bottom of the ground. Whereas
ERW refers to mines or explosives that have been used but failed to detonate as planned
and explosive ordnance that has not been used during an armed conflict, but that has been
left behind or dropped by a party to an armed conflict.
The effects of mines are needed to be addressed as it is threatening precious resources and
devastating economies plus killing many innocent souls. They remain undetected for
decades waiting to wound or kill long after conflicts end. It has been seen that each month
many people are being injured or killed by the mines and most of them are civilians. Many
are suffered from massive internal injuries and had died instantly after stepping on the
mines that are left behind. Plus there are people too who have been survived from the
explosion of land mine with amputated legs. Mines and explosive remnants of war injure
and kill lives indiscriminately.
The mines and explosive remnants of war don't differentiate between soldiers, civilians or
farmers at the field. Being in a fear of fatal injuries, the people around minefields area are
also facing the dangers of poverty. These devices make agricultural land unusable and the
presence of landmines keeps the people from being able to fully utilize their land and
resources. Due to this many of the people living in conditions of poverty and food insecurity.
As a result, a lot of the farmable land goes unused, keeping profits and production low,
particularly in times of drought. Even though they are fully aware of the risks in minefields,
with that crippling poverty, people are forced into dangerous mined areas to feed
themselves to survive. This is when accidents usually take place.
In mine/explosive remnants of war, affected areas often limit the development of
infrastructure. Minefields are being a barrier for building roads, schools, hospitals or any
necessary infrastructure for the well-being of the people around the mined areas. The
mined and remnants of war parts are being left behind from the development whereas the
other part of the country keeps marching towards the greatness in development.
In short, mines/explosive remnant of wars are being a threat to human lives and socio-
economic development. Everyone should play a vital role in creating mine awareness to
make Earth a better place to live on.
