The Koala

Koalas live in Australia. They spend most of their time high up in tall
eucalyptus trees. Koalas eat the leaves from the trees. They eat about 2-3
pounds (0.9 to 1.4 kg) of leaves every day. Koalas drink very little water. The
eucalyptus leaves give koalas the water they need.
Many people think koalas are bears because they look like bear cubs.
Koalas are not bears. They are marsupials. Marsupials are a special kind of
mammal. They have pouches to keep their babies warm and safe.
Koalas have pouches just like another animal whose name begins with

day, when Brandon was playing at Matthew’s house, Brandon jumped from
the swing set and landed in a strange way. “My arm!” he shouted. One look at
Brandon’s arm told Matthew that it was broken.
Brandon’s parents took him to the hospital where the doctor took an x-
ray of his arm. The doctor put a blue cast on his arm and told Brandon that his
bones would grow back in place. He also reminded Brandon not to take any
risk, such as playing too roughly during the next 8 weeks.
The next day, Brandon took his x-ray to school and told the class his story.

“Yes,” Nathan said.
