HELICAL GEAR

1. A pair of parallel helical gears consists of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 40 teeth gear. The
helix angle is 250 and the normal pressure angle is 200. The normal module is 3 mm. calculate
a. The transverse module
b. The transverse pressure angle
c. The axial pitch
d. The pitch circle diameters of the pinion and the gear
e. The centre distance and
f. The addendum and dedendum circle diameters of the pinion

2. A helical gear of 250 mm diameter transmits a torque of 200 N-m. The pressure angle in a
plane normal to the teeth is 200. The helix angle is 450. Determine the gear tooth loads.

Problems Based on Known Diameter:

3. A pair of helical gears is to transmit 15 kW. The teeth re 200stub in diametral plane and have
a helix angle of 450. The pinion runs at 10000 rpm and has 80 mm pitch diameter. The gear
has a pitch diameter of 320 mm. If the gears are made of cast steel having allowable static
strength of 100 MPa; determine module and face width from static strength considerations
and check the gears for wear, given = 618

4. The following data refers to the design of a helical gear drive:

a. Power transmitted 34 kW at 2800 rpm of pinion
b. Speed ratio 4.5, number of teeth on pinion 18
c. Helix angle 250, pressure angle α = 200 stub
d. Material for both pinion and gear is medium carbon steel whose allowable stress may
be taken as 230 MPa
e. Pinion diameter is limited to 120 mm
Determine the axial thrust on the shaft and check the gears for dynamic and wear loads.

5. Design pair of equal diameter 200 stub teeth helical gears to transmit 37.5 kW with moderate
shocks at 1200 rpm. The two shafts are parallel and 0.45 m apart. Each gear is made of steel
with β = 300

6. A compressor running at 350 rpm is driven by a 120 kW motor running at 1400 rpm. The
centre distance is 400 mm and helix angle is 250. The motor pinion is made of forged steel
and the driven gear is cast steel. Design the gear using 200 FDI systems.
Problems Based on Unknown Diameter
7. A helical cast steel gear with 30o helix angle has to transmit 35 kW at 1500 rpm. If the gear
has 24 teeth, determine the necessary module, pitch diameter and face width for 20o full
depth teeth. The static stress for cast steel may be taken as 56 MPa. The width of the face
may be taken as 3 times the normal pitch. What would be the end thrust on the gear? The
.
tooth factor for 20o full depth involute gears may be taken as 0.154 − where ze is the

equivalent number of teeth.

8. A helical gear is required to transmit 35 kW at 1500 rpm. The helix angle is 30o and 20o FDI
system is used. Both gears are made of same material having design stress of 56 MPa and
BHN =200. The starting torque is 20% greater than the mean torque. The drive is to be safe
for continuous operation. The speed reduction is 3:1. Specify the details of the drive. Use 24
teeth on pinion.

9. Design a helical gear to transmit a power of 15kW from a shaft rotating at 1000 rpm to
another shaft to be run at 360 rpm. Assume involute profile with a pressure angle of 20o. The
material of the pinion is forged steel SAE 1030 whose σd = 172.375 MPa and the material for
the gear is cast steel 0.2% C untreated with σd= 137.4 MPa. The gears operate under a
condition of medium shocks for a period of 10 hours per day. Check for dynamic load, if load
C = 580 N/mm and also for wear load.

10. A pair of carefully cut helical gears for a turbine has a transmission ratio of 10:1. The teeth
are 20o stub involute in the normal plane. Pinion has 25 teeth and rotates at 5000 rpm.
Material for pinion and gear is 0.4% C steel untreated with allowable static stress of 69.66
MPa. Helix angle = 30o. Power transmitted = 90 kW. Service factor = 1.25. Wear and
lubrication factor = 1.25. Determine the module in normal plane and face width of the gears.
Suggest suitable surface hardness for the gear pair.

11. Design a pair of helical gears to transmit a power of 20 kW from a shaft running at 1000 rpm
to a parallel shaft to be run at 350 rpm.
