Introduction
1 Introduction
1.1 Setting up advice
1) Placement
2) Electric connection
Electric Current :
110-220V / 50-60 HZ 300VA
Automatic switch commutation.
Fuses :
F 2A-250V for 200-240V
F 4A-125V for 100-120V
An earth plug must be used for the user and apparatus's elements safety.
Any deterioration in the apparatus's elements due to being connected to a non-
earthed electric current will render the guarantee null and void.
1.2 Switching on
Before plugging in the apparatus, you are strongly advised to read and
follow the instructions for the electrical and reagents pack connections found in
the MS9-5 Installation Manual.
When you switch on the apparatus, all the starting up, testing, initialisation and
priming operations are automatic.
There is an option to invalidate the priming at the start, but you are recommended
not to use it.
The apparatus has been constructed to remain plugged in 24 hours a day. It is
capable of putting itself automatically into sleep mode during the evening and
start again in the morning at a programmed time so as to be available quickly.
In this chapter we are going to describe the standard procedure from starting as
well as the different initialisation and test displays to the final display screen.
1.2.1 Plugging in
When all the electric and fluidics (reagents pack) connections have been carried
out, check you have well installed the MS card in its drive on the left of the
machine with the serigraphy facing upwards. Then switch the apparatus on.
The switch is at the back of the apparatus, on the left :
The program and apparatus's auto-test are launched when the ' System
initialisation' dialogue appears.
1) Language
preparation. You can contact the technical department to know which languages
are available.
2) System
The setting system displays the results of the different tests carried out during the
starting up :
- Detection of the system's different elements.
- Model display.
- Display of the fluidic and acquired programs.
- Final status of the machine.
If all the electronic and mechanical tests have been passed successfully, 'OK'
should appear on the bottom, then, after a few seconds, the starting up display
should give way to the main display.
In our case :
Program Version : 1.2 build 7
Acquisition : Problem (Obviously the problem comes from the acquisition card).
3) Priming
If the machine has been parameterised to carry out a priming during its starting
up (the 'Priming' box should appear checked), the apparatus will carry out several
additional technical operations :
d) Decontamination counting cycle (if the option has been selected in the
parameter system panel)
When the apparatus is ready for use the main display will appear like this :
The MS9 main display is made up of several distinct zones marked out with
numbers :
1) Menu Zone
The tool bar works as a shortcut for the program's most used functions.
Ex : a click with the mouse on the first icon from the left on the tool bar,
symbolised by a tube of blood, starts an analysis.
For a description of each icon's function, place the mouse's cursor over it. After a
3) Identification zones
4) Result zones
Color, character and its size as well as the displayed units are programmable
(refer to the 'Parameters' chapter further on in this manual).
5) Graph zones
The curve display zone is made up of 4 graphs in 5 DIFF mode and 3 graphs in 3
DIFF mode :
5 DIFF mode :
- Scattergram of white blood cells (WBC) .
- Histogram of eosinophils (Eo).
- Histogram of platelets (PLT or THR).
- Histogram of red blood cells (RBC).
3 DIFF mode
- Histogram of white blood cells.
- Histogram of platelets.
- Histogram of red blood cells.
Above the top graphs and under the bottom graphs are two zones displaying a
real time monitoring of the most important parameters during the count :
- The probe voltage of soundings of the WBC, eosinophils and RBC/platelet
tanks.
- The count drop.
All the abnormalities, blockages and air leaks, are immediately translated by the
modification of one or several monitored curves.
7) Status bar
Finally, the status bar at the bottom of the display is made up of 6 zones :
- Icon for detecting the presence of the tube of blood or memorising the automatic
starting for the next analysis.
Analysis
2 Analysis
2.1 Carrying out an analysis
2.1.1 Testing the blood sample
1) Anti-coagulant
The most frequently used anticoagulant is the EDTA K3 or sometimes the EDTA
K2. The optimal concentration is from 2 to 3 mg of EDTA per ml of blood.
Other anticoagulants, such as Heparin, can generate instable results. On very
delicate thrombocyte pathology, 'Citrate' can be used.
Nearly every types of sampling tubes can be used with capacities from 1 to 5 ml.
By default the MS9-5 uses from 40 to 80 microliters of whole blood to complete
an analysis.
The quantity used by MS9-5 is programmable and depends on the mode used :
3DIFF or 5DIFF.
For lower quantities (particular cases such as new-born for example), a special
blood sampling kit meant for blood micro-sampling is also available :
HEMO-KIT 200 Reference : 3MSR0550.
You are recommended, and it is crucial, to always fill the tube used with the
anticipated quantity of blood. Do not half fill it.
For example, a 5 ml tube should be filled with 5 ml.
3) Blood sample
4) homogenisation
2.1.2 Preparation
Two very important points must always be checked before carrying out an
analysis :
1) Bank Selection
Look at the 'Bank' chapter in this manual for a full description of the banks.
The present bank appears at the end of the tool bar of the main window (refer to
the main display description in the 'Switching on' chapter).
The mode used is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the display : 5 DIFF
or 3 DIFF.
To change banks, for example from male bank to female bank, select the
required bank from the roll-down list in the tool bar in the following way :
To finally display :
There are two cases that we point out further on in this manual that do not
take into account the bank currently selected :
1) If the identification mode is 'work list', the bank used will be that programmed
in the notebook and not that displayed.
2) During the quality control, the bank used is the 'CONTROL' bank.
To change the apparatus's use mode from 5 DIFF to 3 DIFF or vice versa, click
with the mouse on the 'Settings' menu, then select 'System' or press the 'F12'
function key, a dialogue window similar to the display below appears.
Use the 'Parameters' box on the top right of the tab system to select the count
mode (3DIFF or 5DIFF).
Then click on the 'Ok' button to save the change.
For a full description of the 'System setup' dialogue, refer to the 'Parameters'
chapter in this manual.
3) Blood homogenisation
To identify the next analysis, press the 'F4' function key or click on the
'Identification' menu and select 'Patient identification', or yet again click on the
next analysis's identification zone button (refer to the main display's description in
the 'Switching on' chapter).
- During :
For that, click on the 'in progress identification zone' button (on the bottom left).
- After :
By clicking on the displayed analysis identification zone button (on the right top).
Changing the analysis's identification number and the used bank is not allowed in
this case.
NB. The bank choice can only be carried out before starting an analysis. It is
impossible to change banks during the analysis.
Several precautions must be taken with the tube of blood to carry out a good
analysis.
Place the tube in the adapter by pressing downwards. This automatically starts
the analysis.
There are other methods for starting an analysis. If the tube is already in place,
you can :
- Click on the 'Tube of Blood' icon in the tool bar.
It is possible to deactivate the automatic starting by pressing the tube in the stand
('Fluidics Parameters' Chapter).
3) Blood test(s)
When the analysis starts, the apparatus begins by carrying out one or two blood
tests according to whether it has been configured in 3DIFF or 5DIFF mode.
After the second test, the apparatus gives off an audible signal so that you can
remove the tube of blood from the stand.
(The 3 DIFF mode gives off a sound after the sole test).
This paragraph's aim is not to give a detailed description of the dilution cycle but
to give a summary.
For further details on the apparatus's full dilution cycle operation, refer to the
reference manual.
2) Dilution preparation
a) In the 5 DIFF mode, the first blood test is for dilution in the eosinos chamber.
The second blood test is for the pre-dilution chamber.
b) In the 3 DIFF mode, the sole blood test goes straight to the pre-dilution
chamber, followed identically as in the 5 DIFF mode.
3) Counting
The counting itself is divided into four equal parts depending on the length of time
programmed in the bank. This detects any possible homogeneity or micro-clot
problems by comparing the intermediary results.
The program also carries out a real time probe voltage and counting depression
test to detect any possible blockages in the orifice of one of the measuring
chambers.
The accepted tolerance for probe voltage and count drop variants are
configurable and are carried out on the dotted line graphs.
Once the count is finished, the apparatus calculates, displays and then saves the
results.
The analytic cycle finishes with a diluter rinsing and if needs be, printing and
transfer via the apparatus's serial port of the hematological test. These
functionalities are configurable and will be tackled further on in this manual.
It is possible to cancel the analysis programmed by pressing the tube again in its
stand. The little tube of blood is displayed in the status bar then disappears.
To key in the identification information, click on the identification zone button for
the next analysis (refer to the main display's description in the introduction
chapter) to open the next analysis's identification dialogue box.
To recall the day's analyses, use the combination of the keys 'Ctrl' + 'R' or even
click on the 'analysis' menu and select 'Load'.
By default options are configured to recall the day's analyses. Just click on the
'Search' button on the top left for them to be displayed.
The default display order works backwards, that is to say the first line will display
the most recent analysis.
1) A date zone
To use the analysis search by a date the displayed date must be checked :
To change the date, click with the arrow on the right of the date to display a
calendar, then browse in this to select the sought after date.
To choose the period, select one of the three following comparison operators :
If the date is not checked, the search is carried out by ignoring the displayed date
and the comparison operator.
Examples :
The following selection searches for all the analysis carried out on 7/02/2003.
To carry out a more precise search, several additional criteria may be specified.
A 'Name' zone lets you carry out a search by the patient's name.
The search motor can take the '%' substitution character.
Ex : DU% in the 'Name' zone enables a search of all the analysis of the patients
whose name begins 'DU'.
You can combine this criteria with one requirement on the date by checking it.
Using the file criteria is similar to that of the name. Enter the complete
identification number or only a part of it with a substitution character.
In the following example, the search concerns all the analysis carried out in 2003
with the identification number ending with '009'
To suppress a criterion, just erase the contents of its field. To do that, select its
contents with the mouse then erase it by using the 'Del' key on the keyboard.
4) Remarks
c) Multicriteria
It is possible to combine several criteria including the date :
Example :
It is possible to display all the analysis carried out by one given operator, one
precise bank or since a given date.
2.3 Exporting
2.3.1 Exporting the day’s analysis
To export the day's analysis, click on the 'Analysis' menu and select 'Export'.
The by default options are configured to export the day's analysis. Just click on
the 'Search' button on the top left to display the list of analysis carried out during
that day.
Then 'Export' button to choose between the communication serial port and a text
file.
Remarks :
1) The choice of serial ports and its configuration, delimited character field and
the decimal symbol are configurable. For more information, refer to the
'parameters' chapter further on in this manual.
2) In the case of an export in a text file, the name and destination of the export
file must be specified.
The kind of exported file is a table that contains as many lines as analysis. The
character that separates the fields is by default ';' (Semi-colon). This kind of file
is easily exportable in an 'Excel' or other kind of spreadsheet program.
3) The format of the sent data on the serial port is described in the notes at the
end of this manual.
Using the search engine in the 'Export' dialogue box is identical to that of the
analysis consultation.
Refer to the 'Search engine' paragraph in the 'Consulting an analysis' chapter for
a full description of its use.
Identification
3 Identification
3.1 Patient
1) 'Analysis' zone
Selects the analysis for which you wish to key in identification information.
Depending on the apparatus's status, these options are not always available. If
no analysis is in progress, for example, this option will be invalidated.
It is the same with the type of analysis. Some options will not be available : it is
impossible to change the bank for a current or a finished analysis.
2) 'Identification' zone
3) 'Patient' zone
The two zones in this box enable the keying of the patient's name and first name.
4) 'Bank' zone
The bank box indicates the bank used for the analysis.
The bank can only be changed for the next analysis.
5) 'Operator' zone
Enables keying the operator's name. The 'New' button gives direct access to a
new operator's keying dialogue.
6) 'Origin' zone
For a hospital environment use of this apparatus, the 'Department' and 'Division'
fields enable the entry of additional information on the department to which the
patient belongs.
7) 'Comments' zone
This zone is for entering observations related to the patient or the analysis's
results. This zone will be printed.
The work list is a particular instruction mode for the apparatus to key the
information for the machine to carry out the analyses in advance and in a
predefined order.
This chapter describes the way to key in or edit the work list. The instructions on
how to use it are referred to in the 'Parameters' chapter further on in this manual.
To access the work list's editing dialogue, tap the 'F2' function key or click on the
'Identification' menu then select 'Patient work list'.
An empty dialogue box is displayed if no work list has been keyed beforehand :
The 'Delete all' button deletes all the analysis in the work list in one go.
The work list may be modified or completed later as the data is saved.
To key a new work list, begin by erasing the present analysis with the 'Delete all'
button.
3.3 Operator
With the displayed dialogue box, you can enter a new operator or modify the
name of an existing one.
All the added operators' names will be displayed in the 'Operator' box of the
'Patient identification' dialogue.
All the added department and division names will be displayed in the 'Origin' box
of the 'Patient identification' dialogue box.
Calibration
4 Calibration
4.1 Presentation
The manual calibration consists of carrying out a blood analysis of which its
parameter value is known in advance, then to calculate the value of the
coefficients provided by the machine the results must be applied to find the
targeted values.
To key the coefficient, click on the 'Calibration' menu then select 'Coefficients'.
There are two methods for verifying the keyed value's accuracy :
- Carrying out a new analysis with the same blood.
- Directly recalculate the previous analysis's results taking into account the
calibration's new coefficient. To do this, click the 'Calibration' menu then select
'Recalculation'.
Check the validity of your calibration by comparing the displayed results to your
targeted values.
4.3 Automatic
The apparatus proposes a simple automatic calibration mode that takes the
manual calibration mode's logic previously described but carries out the
operations automatically.
To carry out an automatic calibration, click the 'Calibration' menu the select
'Coefficients'.
Click the 'Automatic calibration' button.
Select the target blood in the list. (Refer to the 'Target values' paragraph to
create a target values lot).
Now we have selected our target values lot, validate by clicking the 'Ok' button.
Place your tube of test blood on the stand and click the 'Analyse' button.
When the analysis is finished, the program displays the analysis's results and
calculates the coefficient.
All the coefficients are selected by default but you may choose to only keep those
of your choice by removing the ticks on the unwanted parameters.
To apply the new coefficients, save the values by clicking the 'Save' button.
There are two methods of checking the validity of the new coefficients :
Click the 'New' button. Key the lot's reference, its level and expiry date.
To key the target values of this new lot, select it in the list then click on 'Change'.
To key or modify a target value, select the required parameter then the 'Change'
button :
All you have to do is to key the target value and the variations interval. The high
and low values are calculated automatically.
The apparatus carries out a continuous follow-up, during the counting and of the
applied electronic field in the measurement chamber. This follow-up enables an
immediate detection of any possible blockage. A calibration is necessary to
define the reference's optimal field values, when it is installed, during the counter
orifice's change, a change in the probe voltage's values or after any electronic
modification.
To carry out a probe voltage calibration, you must make sure that the
counter's orifices are perfectly clean. To do this and in case of doubt, a WBC,
RBC and Eos orifice technical function cleaning may be necessary.
The dialogue box contains a 'Old values' box that displays the current machine
values and the empty 'New values' box.
To start up a new calibration, click on the 'Calibrate' button.
The apparatus carries out an analysis then completes the 'new values' box with
the calibration values established during the analysis.
The values shown in the previous panels are not entirely the reference
values and are only used as an example.
Quality control
5 Quality control
5.1 Presentation
Quality control carries out regular tests on control bloods to verify the apparatus's
calibration.
The 'Targeted values' menu enables keying the targeted values and the
acceptable variations of your control bloods.
1) Keying or editing the targeted values for the used control bloods.
2) analysis from a given control blood.
3) Consultation and editing.
The results can be exported under an ASCII table form for later specific
treatment.
The 'New' or 'Read' buttons enable to create a lot of target values either manually
or automatically.
The 'Change' button enables editing of the existing lot.
1) Manual mode
This method consists of creating a lot reference for each level, then keying the
target value and acceptable range for each parameter.
Fill in the zones, references, control blood level and its expiration date. Click on
the 'Save' button to save the values. The new reference will be displayed in the
list from then on.
It is now a matter of keying the target values and the acceptable ranges. To do
this, select the lot and click on the 'Ok' button.
To key the values, select a line and click the 'Edit' button :
Enter the target value and the provided delta with the control lot.
The high and low limits adjust automatically in function with the keyed values.
2) Automatic mode
To use the automatic mode, you need the smart card that goes with your test.
(Reference 102 CONTROL-DIFF). All the lot creation operations and the keying
of the target values and ranges are automatic.
Replace the MS-CARD in the apparatus before carrying out a new analysis.
5.3 Analysis
A quality control analysis is carried out after having selected the lot used.
5.4 Consultation
Consulting the results of the analysis carried out for a quality control can be done
in two ways :
- A listing mode in the form of a result chart for a given period.
- A Levey-Jennings type graph for the same period.
To have access to the quality control's consultation dialogue, select 'Consultation'
in the 'Quality control' menu.
1) Result chart
This dialogue displays an analysis by line and an additional column for each
parameter in which the difference, in percentage to the target value, is displayed.
You can choose the level from a roll-down list on the top left.
The period is fixed, by default, to two months and a maximum number of 50
analysis displayed.
To have a result chart for different criteria, use the 'Search' button.
The results can be printed in chart form or exported in ASCII file form that can
easily be imported into an 'Excel' or other chart type.
The 'Load' button enables the consultation of one particular analysis.
2) Graphs
The search criteria remain on the top of the dialogue, but the chart is replaced by
a graph.
To select a different parameter, use the roll-down list on the right.
The white dotted line is the graph's reference and corresponds to the parameter's
keyed target value.
The yellow dotted line represents this parameter's measured values' average. Its
relative position to the target value will immediately give indications on the
apparatus's drift and on the necessity of carrying out or not a new calibration.
The green dotted lines correspond to the acceptability distance.
The red dotted lines correspond to twice this distance.
The top and the bottom of the graph correspond to three times this acceptability
value.

6.4 Fluidics
The fluidics dialogue (or diluter's configuration) modifies a certain number of the
apparatus's fluidics parameters...
For fuller information, refer to the 'Dilution cycle data' chapter in the reference
manual.
The values displayed above are not necessarily the reference values of your
machine.
Every fluidics parameter modification must be carried out by a qualified person.
An erroneous value may cause serious machine malfunctioning.

6.5 System
button. You can thus, in case of problems, restore the apparatus's initial
adjustments by clicking the 'Load default values' button.
The first group of parameters on the top left contain the time and date system
adjustments, the stand-by time and the start-up time.
The 'Default bank' enables you to choose the bank selected for starting up.
The 'Parameters' group enable you to change the 5DIFF use mode to 3DIFF or
vice versa.
The eosinos chamber cannot be used in 3DIFF mode. The 3DIFF mode results
are compensated by an adjustable coefficient for that. This coefficient is 98% by
default. It is one of the reasons why you should calibrate the apparatus in 5DIFF
mode.
The last group 'Stand-by' enables you to validate or invalidate the automatic
stand-by mode action.
6.5.2 Hb tab
The apparatus carries out several measurements and sends back an average
value to determine the hemoglobin value.
The following zones are to set the number of measurements carried out to
measure the hemoglobin and hemoglobin 'blank'.
The final value being the difference between the average of the measured values
and the 'blank' value.
6.5.3 Sensitivity
This tab enables you to configure the apparatus's sensitivity for possible
blockages or homogeneity problems.
Do not use too high delta values, otherwise you are not likely to detect a
blockage or a homogeneity problem.
It goes without saying that in this case the results sent back by the apparatus are
likely to be erroneous.
As with too small a deltas, there is a likelihood of setting off small blockage or
homogeneity alarms at any untimely moment (especially with low value results).
These options enable you to ask for the results to be sent either with or without
graph data.
If the option 'Manual send' is checked, the data's exportation can only be carried
out on the serial port with the export dialogue.
For a full description of the transmitted data format, refer to this manual's
appendix.
6.5.5 Parameters
6.5.6 View
6.5.7 Identification
This dialogue enables you to choose and configure the required identification
mode.
1) Manual mode
2) Automatic mode
The automatic incrementation mode enables you to key a set part of the
identification's name and the apparatus will increment the value of each analysis.
Example :
If the set part of the patient's identification is analysis0 and the increment 1, the
identification's names will be :
analysis1
analysis2
...
analysis10
etc.
The automatic date mode is identical to the automatic mode, but the set part
corresponds to the day's date with the following format :
YYYYMMDD-XXX
4) Work list
For the work list's functionalities' description, refer to the 'Identification' chapter in
this manual.
When the last programmed analysis in the work list is finished, the
apparatus toggles to the manual identification mode.
6.5.8 Blank
The 'Blank' parameter configures the different parameters used during an empty
analysis.
To do a 'blank' analysis, use the 'Ctrl' + 'B' command, or the 'Analysis' menu
then 'Blank'.
1) 'RBC' Group
The first parameter, 'Max value for blank' sets the RBC maximum value for which
the empty analysis will be considered as a blank.
In this case :
- If the 'Null forced' option is selected in the display parameters, the results in this
'empty' analysis will be nil.
- If the 'Save blank' option in this dialogue is not checked, the results will not be
registered.
A badly rinsed machine, the end of a flask or a past expiration period date can
set off this alarm.
In this case, you are advised to check the state of the reagents flasks and carry
6.5.9 Password
This dialogue chooses the level of the rights set by default to starting up the
apparatus or modifying the passwords.
2) Modifying passwords.
To access super user or administrator level you have to key in a password.
This dialogue modifies the apparatus's passwords.
Choose the level on the left, then key in the new password in the two fields, then
validate.
For full information of the agreed to rights in function to the chosen level,
refer to the 'Services' chapter in this manual.
6.5.10 Export
This dialogue parameters certain delimiter characters during the analyses' results
exportation.
6.6 Units
6.6.1 Regional Parameters
This dialogue chooses a standard unit set, as well as the language used for
wording the parameters.
The choice of the norm used determines a set of units replying to a standard.
To modify the standard, you have to select one from the list then validate it by
clicking the 'Modify' button.
The 'Normal' box on the bottom right displays the parameter as it will be
displayed, so you can check the modifications made before validating them.
1) 'Format' box
2) Unit box
The coefficient goes from 1 to 10 to compensate for the exponent (from thousand
to hundred per mm3).
The 'Normal' box displays the parameter as it will appear by taking these
modifications into account.

7.1 Banks
7.1.1 Presentation
- Some are the machine's own global functioning and are grouped in the
configuration system and fluidics dialogues.
- Others are the blood analysis's own nature. The whole of the latter are grouped
in a 'Bank'.
Each time you select a bank, you are reconfiguring the apparatus according to
the chosen bank's parameter values.
The apparatus is provided with a certain number of predefined banks. You may
modify these parameters or even create your own banks.
In the case when you want to modify certain parameters all the same, we advise
you to work on a duplicate bank (see 'Creation' bank section) rather than the
original.
The subject of this chapter is to show how to modify a bank's parameters and not
a functional description of these parameters. For that, refer to the 'reference
manual'.
7.1.2 Selection
The selected bank for the next analysis is displayed in the bank zone of the next
analysis.
- File number = '20030111-002'
If you wish to change the bank for the next analysis just select the required bank
in the tool bar :
To have :
Any bank change must be done before a new analysis. Once the analysis
has started, it is impossible to modify the bank.
The 'work list' mode is irrespective of the bank displayed in the tool bar.
7.1.3 Modification
Select the required bank, then click on the 'Edit' button, a new window is
displayed.
The bank's name is displayed in the top left of the window. In our case it is the
'MALE' bank.
You may abort these current modifications at any time by pressing on the 'Cancel'
button.
If you press on the 'Ok' button, all the performed modifications will be taken into
account.
A bank's different parameters are grouped by type and accessible by the tabs
located on the top of the window.
Click on the corresponding tab to access a value group.
7.1.3.1 Threshold
Threshold values can vary from 1 to 255 with a minimum value inferior to the
maximum value.
To modify a value, use the up and down arrows on the value's right to
respectively increment and decrement the value.
For a full description of a bank's threshold adjustments, refer to the 'Cell
The gain is a programmable value from 0 to 255. The 0 value cuts the channel.
An increasing value raises this gain.
To modify a gain, use the up and down arrows on the right of the value.
For the full description of the bank's parameters, refer to the 'Cell Measurement'
chapter in the Reference Manual.
The counter's time modification is taken into account automatically during the
calculations of the results.
To modify a time, use the up and down arrows on the right of the value to
respectively raise or lower it.
A too low a counter's time may affect the machine's CV or set off
homogeneity alarms.
Conversely, a too high a counter's time may empty the chambers under the
counter orifices' level and cause completely erroneous results.
For a full description of probe voltage values, refer to the 'Cell Measurement'
chapter in the reference manual.
The probe voltage is a one tenth volt value applied to the measurement
chambers' electrodes' terminal.
The size of the impulses depends on this voltage.
The apparatus corrects the MCV value in function to the probe voltage applied to
the RBC/THR.
For a full description of the smoothing parameters and their respective actions,
refer to the 'Cell Measurement' chapter in the reference manual, 'Histogram
smoothing' paragraph.
1) Smoothing calculation
The parameters used for the calculation compensate the apparatus's non-
linearity for the low values. It is not recommended to modify the factory values.
2) Smoothing display
These parameters only have an aesthetic role at printing display level. However,
it is not recommended to apply to high a smoothing coefficient that could conceal
certain defects in a curve.
1) 3DIFF zone
This zone groups together 8 values intended for modifying the cursors' position
for a formula approach : Lympho, Mono, Granulo.
NB. These values are only used in 3 DIFF mode. For a full description refer to the
apparatus's reference manual.
The 'Start' and 'End' values define their own zone for each type of cell for which
the formula will be calculated.
2) 3DIFF/5DIFF zone
These cursors are used in the two modes and only concern the RBC and
platelets channel.
3) 5 DIFF zone
Only in 5 DIFF mode and only concerns the white blood cells. For a 5DIFF
min/max description, refer to the reference manual.
LMG formula values found may be different in 5DIFF mode and in 3DIFF
mode. The latter being only a formula approach.
7.1.3.7 Quantities
The quantities parameters regulate the quantity of sample blood as well as the
lyse quantity for each dilution.
1) 1st test
The first parameter group concerns the blood, eosinos lyse and if necessary
diluent quantities used for eosinos chamber dilution.
- Quantity of blood
taken for dilution in
the eosinos chamber.
- Eof-diff. lyse
quantity.
- Quantity of
additional diluent for
the eosinos dilution.
- Not used.
The 'Additional time' parameter is not accessible for the human MS9-5 in the
present version.
2) 2nd test
7.1.3.8 Calibration
For an everyday use, there is not need to modify the calibration bank's dialogue.
But the machine's general calibration may not be sufficient with certain types of
blood and for certain parameters. So you may have to adjust the results by
modifying their calibration coefficients at the bank's level.
7.1.3.9 Correction
The bank correction panel corrects a results' linearity gap for raised values.
The apparatus's standard adjustments have been calculated in such a way to
provide a largest possible linearity range.
But it is possible to lose this linearity for particular adjustments for high values
(i.e. very high blood cells quantity).
Correction coefficients restore this linearity for high values.
7.1.4 Creation
The TEST bank thus created will be the carbon copy of the MALE bank, that is to
say :
1) All the new bank's parameters will be identical to those of the model bank.
2) The 3 DIFF and 5 DIFF cursors' definitions will be identical.
3) The pathological alarms (if the model bank has them) will be identical.
To create its own bank, choose a model bank that is the closest to it.
The new bank thus created will be available for the next analysis.
7.1.5 Deletion
1) You can only delete a bank that you have created beforehand. Banks provided
with the apparatus are locked and therefore the 'Delete' button is not valid.
2) For the moment, it is not possible to delete a bank that is not locked if the
analyses have not been carried out with it.
A future option (program version > 1.2 build 9) will enable you to lock and
unlock a bank as well as deleting it with all the analyses concerning it. This
option will only be possible with the machine's 'administrator' rights (Refer to the
chapter concerning the use of passwords).
Characteristics :
- An flag is linked to a bank.
- An flag is linked to a given parameter.
- Up to 5 logical operations are defined making the conditions play part on the
different parameters.
If several flags are set off simultaneously for one same parameter, the flag
with the strongest priority will be displayed.
7.2.2 Creation
- In the 'Conditions' box click the 'New' button to create the first condition : RBC >
5.9.
For the first logical operation, the condition has to be AND, the parameter is RBC,
the comparison operator is the sign superior to the 5.9 M/mm3.
Begin the same operation again to create the second condition :
The logical operation is the 'AND' operator, the associated parameter MCV, the
comparison operator is the sign inferior '<' and the value of MCV 83.0 fl.
Click the 'Save' button to register it.
Now that the two logical conditions have been created, the criterion for setting off
the alarm has to be defined.
Linking the two logical operations with the 'AND' operator
The two conditions must be satisfied to set off the alarm.
Select the 'AND RBC > 5.9' in the roll-down list on the left of the 'Conditions' box,
then click the arrow button to the right '-->'.
The condition is displayed in the right column.
Do the same for the 'AND MCV < 83' condition.
The two conditions are displayed in the list on the right.
NB : to remove a condition from the list on the right, click on the arrow to the left
'<--'
The alarm is now created. To save it, click on the 'Save' button.
To sum up :
During an analysis carried out with the 'MALE' bank, if the setting off criteria are
satisfied, a 'T' symbol (in yellow) will be displayed next to the GR parameter.
The contents of the 'Description' field will be printed at the bottom of the analysis
in the 'pathologic flag' zone.
1) The pathologic flags and logical conditions are linked to a data bank.
2) If a logical condition for a data bank is modified, the setting off value of all the
pathologic flags that will use this condition will be modified.
3) When creating a new bank, the pathologic flags as well as the logical condition
defined in the model bank will be duplicated.
This type of alarm is also used to define the normalities for the associated bank.
The setting off conditions are identical.
The main difference with a 'Other' type alarm is the printing of the results.
1) The normalities that are printed at each parameter level come from alarms of
this kind.
2) The 'Description' field is not printed in the 'pathologic flag' zone for these
alarms.
7.2.3 Modification
1) Choose the 'MALE' associated bank and select the 'Thalassemia' alarm then
'Modify' button :
Change the 'RBC' parameter value for 'MCV' in the 'Parameter' roll-down list :
If you wish to change the criterion or criteria of a logical condition proceed in the
following way :
The modification carried out on the logical condition will automatically be reported
to the column on the right :
7.2.4 Deletion
Select what you want to delete in the flag list. Then 'Delete' button.
The technical functions panel is presented in the form of a roll-down list where
the different functions are classified in alphabetical order.
To start up a fluidics function, select it in the roll-down list then click 'Execute', if
not 'Quit'.
7.4 Stand-by
The stand-by mode can either be done automatically at the programmed time in
the dialogue system, or carried out manually : 'Services, Activ. Stand-by' menu
or a combination of the 'Ctrl' + 'V' keys.
At the end of the operation check the apparatus's status in the status bar at the
bottom of the screen :
7.5 Password
To access each of these levels, you need to enter a password. To check which
level the apparatus has at present, access the 'About' dialogue and note the
number you find under the padlock.
To change this present level, select 'Password' in the 'Services' menu, then enter
the password corresponding to the required level.
Select the level on the left and key the new password.
