Abstract
Children are expected to learn certain skills in preschool, so they are prepared for elementary
school. Would parents rather have their children learn through playing or learn through
worksheets? There are many theories about how guided learning helps children develop. Some
people think that playing is not teaching a child, but some studies have shown that it does help
children learn more effectively, than sitting down and working on a worksheet. There is a
difference between free play and guided play. Free play is when the child is leading the play and
making the rules. Guided play is when an adult is leading the activities. Good quality play begins
with providing activities to motive all areas of development. Guided play also allows the
children to learn more about the environment. Sometimes, free play holds children’s interest
longer, and children become engaged in the activity because they developed it themselves.
Children are expected to learn certain skills in preschool so they are prepared for elementary
school, so Preschool teachers must teach them in a way that will stick with them. Therefore,
guided play and free play is better them just having then sit and listen to what they should know.
