Gura Humorului Town

Gura Humorului lies in North Eastern Romania, approximately in the


geographical centre of Suceava county, in the historical region called Bucovine, 36
kilometres far from Suceava, the county town. This town formed and developed itself
in a depression between mountains, a depression with heights of 460 metres on the
average.
The surrounding heights vary from 650 metres to 833 metres and they are all
covered by leafy and resinous forests. The climate here is temperate – continental,
gentle and refreshing, winters are rich in rainfall while summers are pleasant and
warm.
Certified in documents for the first time in 1490, this place has developed
gradually and it has become one of the most important commercial centres in this
region recently. It became a town in 1904. Most of the population here - of about
16000 inhabitants – are Romanians (96%) of an orthodox religion. Here also live
Germans, Polish, Gypsies, Ukrainians, Lippovan Russians and Slovakians. When it
comes about religion there can be identified here a large variety: Orthodox, Romanic
– Catholic, Greek – Catholic, Adventist, Evangelist, Pentecostal, Old Ritual Orthodox
and Baptist religions.
The town is crossed by the European Road E 574 and by the Railroad 502 that
connects us directly with the capital of the country, Bucharest. There are two railway
stations here, a bus station and an airport in Salcea - Suceava, 56 Kilometres far from
here.
The town Gura Humorului has access to the Internet network, to cable
television, to the systems of mobile phones, we have several banks here, a printing
works, a public library, a cultural club, a stadium. Concerning education and child
protection, we have 6 kindergartens, 3 schools, a high – school, 2 centres of child
social protection, a sports club and a sports association, an educational club, a
territorial hospital, a medical centre, more Governmental organizations, some of them
directly related to foreign partners.
The main industrial activities in Gura Humorului are the textile industry, the
wood processing industry, the food industry, most with private capital.
On the administrative territory of the town (7000 hectares) there can be visited
one of the most well – known churches with exterior wall frescoes: the church of the
Voronet Monastery, also called “The Sixtine Chapel of Eastern Europe”, a monument
of medieval architecture which has been enlisted in the universal patrimony. From
Gura Humorului one can easily get to all the churches with exterior wall paintings in
Bucovine, enlisted in the UNESCO patrimony: Humor Monastery (5 Kilometres),
Moldovita Monastery (28 Kilometres), Sucevita Monastery (58 Kilometres), Arbore
Monastery (30 Kilometres).
Culturally and touristically speaking , this town has many sights to offer:
geological and historical reservations, all kind of old buildings – architectural
monuments, the oldest Catholic church in Bucovine, an old Jewish cemetery – already
declared protected by law zone. Every year we celebrate the Town Days (on the
second week of June) and we house national and international festivals. We also have
the graphics and satirical literature festival “Humour at Gura Humorului”, the movies
and diaprojection festival “Autumn in Voronet”, “The Fair of Easter Eggs”, folk
festivals and festivals dedicated to winter customs.
In the centre of Gura Humorului there is a four star hotel, “Best Western
Bucovine” with 250 accommodation rooms. There is also a two star hotel and many
agrotouristic pensions with 500 accommodation rooms. A new and complex
entertainment base is going to be offered to tourists coming here. They will have the
chance of practicing summer and winter sports as well as other types of activities.
Owing to the natural conditions and to the cultural - touristic offers, Gura
Humorului has been certified as a touristic – climatic resort of national interest and
this means new possibilities of developing for this town in the future.
There have also been identified new business opportunities here, taking into
account the resources in the area and around. Some of them are:
- processing and turning into account products of animal origin: meat, wool, skin,
milk;
- turning into account products that are part of the spontaneous flora (wild fruit,
medical plants, mushrooms);
- developing services for tourism;
- developing other services for the local population and for the people coming here:
new touristic agencies, information offices, car laundries, increasing the clothes
manufacturing industry, attracting new private firms here;
- superior turning into account the wood existent here;
- turning into account the offal of wood and domestic offal;
- processing and turning into account the mineral water springs in Voronet;
- creating some agricultural, zootechnical, fruit – growing and vegetable – growing
microfarms;
- modernizing the market in town as well as the weekly market;
- creating a station of asphaltic mixture;

Taking into account the existence of specialized working people in Gura


Humorului and the real interest shown by the local administration in what concerns
the economical development of the town, we can say that there exist real and
important premises to set some profitable business in Gura Humorului.
