Semester 2, 2017/2018

PRE-LAB ASSIGNMENT

Name (& Group no): MOHAMAD ADAM BIN MD SAAD

Matric no: 1510421
Date: 13/02/2018
Experiment: HEAT PUMP

1. Prepare flow diagram for the experimental procedure (10 marks).

Part A- Water water heat pump

4L of water is poured into the two water reservoirs.

The experiment is set up like in the Figure 5.2 ( lab manual )

The initial pressure and temperature is recoded before switching on the heat pump.

Start the stopwatch and heat pump at the same time.

The power and temperatures reading is recorded on both vaporizer and condenser side every
minutes for approximately 20 minutes.

Part B- Air water heat pump

Water reservoir on the vaporizer side is removed and the heat exchanger is dried.

Temperature at 20C for 4L water is set up on the condenser side.

The initial pressures and temperatures is recorded before switching on the heat pump.

Power reading and temperature at the vaporizer outlet and condenser water temperature is
recorded every minute for approximately 20 minutes.
Steps ii and v is repeated but with a hot blower and cold blower for approximately 30cm
away.
2. What is the real-life/industrial/engineering application behind the theories of the
experiment (10 marks)

There are some countries for example Chicago that started to used heat pump to
treat effluents in order to lower heating, ventilation and air conditioner cost
(HVAC cost) and expected to reduce energy needs by 50 percent.

The source of heat pump is used from the ground rather than from the air due to
groundwater provide relatively constant temperature over the year hence will
leads to higher efficiency.

During winter the heat pump will operate to transfer heat from th effluent to
increase the temperature in the buildings while in summer the heat will
transferred into the water to provide building cooling.

A heat pump sytem will reduce pollution ups to 72 percent compared to electric
resistance heating with standard air-conditioning equipment.

Hence heat pump is very ideal in saving the atmosphere from pollution.
