ABSTRACT

The objectives of this research were: (i) to find out whether or not the use of
dual meaning picture can build up students’ English speaking ability; (ii) to find out
whether or not the use of dual meaning picture interesting in studying English
speaking; (iii) to know the students’ perceptions to the dual meaning picture applied
in teaching English speaking.
The researcher employed Explanatory design of Mixed Method. The sample
was chosen by applying cluster random sampling and assigned two groups namely
experimental and control group. Each group consisted of 25 students. In conducting
the research, the researcher employed three instruments: speaking test to see
students’ speaking ability, questionnaire to see their interest, and learning log to
know their perception to the use of dual meaning picture.
The research result shows that there is significant difference on the students’
speaking ability between experimental and control group. It was proven by the result
of descriptive and inferential statistics analysis of the students’ score. Based on the
result of the data analysis, it showed that the mean score of students’ speaking ability
in experimental group was 65.56 which was higher than control group (59.34). It can
be concluded that the use of dual meaning picture is effective and built up students’
speaking ability. The analysis of questionnaire also showed that dual meaning
picture was interesting. It was proven from the mean score of students’ interest
(77.32) which was classified into interested category from students’ writing on their
learning log, it was found that students had positive perception to dual meaning
picture. The score of probability value in speaking ability (0.004) was lower than the
level of significance (0.05) with degree of freedom (df)=48. It meant that Null
Hypothesis (H0) was rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It is
implied that there is significant difference of students’ English speaking ability who
are taught through dual meaning picture and the students’ speaking ability who are
not taught through dual meaning picture.
