ABSTRAK
Masyarakat Madura mempunyai karakter social, ekonomi dan budaya yang spesifik.
Perempuan Madura dalam system social budaya yang patriarkhi memiliki mobilitas
social dan etos kerja yang tinggi sehingga mereka dapat bertahan dan berkembang di
daerah asal maupun di daerah tujuan migrasi. Ketahanan tersebut bersumber dari kuatnya
pranata/institusi social sebagai energy social yang penting dalam masyarakat. Kurang
dipahaminya indigenous knowledge suatu komunitas berakibat pada munculnya bias ilmu
pengetahuan yang penting sebagai dasar pembangunan.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jatidiri perempuan Madura dari berbagai lapisan,
baik yang tinggal di Madura maupun di luar Madura menunjukkan semangat kerja yang
tinggi, didukung oleh etos kerja pemenuhan kebutuhan pokok, ibadah, kewajiban dan
kemandirian. Adaptasi terhadap perubahan diketemukan pada komunitas perempuan
migrant. Lembaga local potensial yang sangat membantu perempuan bekerja adalah
pondok pesantren, tanean lanjang, dan pranata kerja di pertanian dan perdagangan.
Jatidiri perempuan Madura sebagai pekerja keras yang didorong oleh semanhat dari
dalam (intrinsic) adalah energy social budaya perempuan Madura yang sangat potensial
untuk menggerakkan dan memberdayakan mereka untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidup
perempuan Madura dan keluarganya.
Diperlukan tindak lanjut dari penelitian ini untuk menemukan dan memahami
pengetahuana local perempuan Madura melalui studi mendalam dan diskusi terfokus
tentang aktivitas kerja dan daya adaptasi lembaga local.
ABSTRACT
Madurese society has a specific social, economic, and cultural character. Madurese women in the
patriarchal socio-cultural system poses social mobility and highly working spirit so that they can
survive and grow in their origin as well as in the migration area. The survival comes from the
strong social institution as the important social energy in society. Lack of understanding of the
indigenous knowledge causes bias on the knowledge. The objective of this research are: 1. To
identify and analyze the identity and spirit of Madurese women in the productive and domestic
work; 2. To analyze intrinsic behavior and the domination of women in household economy; 3.
To analyze the perception of Madurese women to the social change, economic, and traditional
institution.
This research uses qualitative approach. The population is Madurese women who live either in
Madura island and outside the island. The locations are chosen purposively in three sites namely
Pamekasan Regency, Malang City, and South Malang Regency. The research methods used are
case study or history, documentation study, and focused discussion.
The result of the research shows that the Madurese women identity from every strata who live
inside and outside Madura Island have a good performance, supported by high working spirit to
meet their basic needs, spiritual needs, obligation, and autonomy. Madurese women have a
migration spirit equal to that of Madurese men because they want to increase their quality of life.
The adaptation to the change is found in the women migrant community. Potential local
institution which play the role in supporting women are Pondok Pesantren, Tanean Lanjang, and
working institution in agriculture and trading. The identity of Madurese woman as a hard worker
motivated by their intrinsic spirit is the socio-cultural energy of Madurese women which is very
potential to empower them and their family.
Future works for this research are to understand the local knowledge of Madurese women
through the deep study and focused discussion about the work activities and the adaptation of
local institution.
