WORKING ON CHOREOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION

When we consider the creation of a choreographic work, we have many options

to create a finished work that can vary greatly. The understanding of these
nuances will provide us a variety of opportunities to play and to be more
expressive and ultimately, to effectively communicate an idea or feeling with our
body and with movement.

The choice of music is very important. Before deciding on one, think about what
you want to express (energy, joy, melancholy, ...). Look closely at the rhythmic
structure, melody and other elements that you can find attractive (the voice, the
instruments, the lyrics of song ...).

Once you have decided on music, you have to take into account not only what
movements are going to do (body), but also the spatial aspects you are going to
develop, the relationship of these movements to music or the rhythm, the
energy you will use in your actions and finally, the scenary and costume
elements. Here I discuss the different options you have within each of the
elements. You can also the possibility to dance free-form (freestyle) making
note of and keeping the movement work best.
There are endless combinations, you just have to get to it. Courage!

1) BODY
- Basic motor skills: walking, running, jumping, turning, ...
- Core movements: flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, rotation ...
- Coordination skills: bouncing, throwing, play, ball handling, handling objects
(rings, spades, balls, etc.) juggling, ..
- Basic techniques from aerobics or dance: running, balancing, step-touch, vee,
calf raises (hop), low kicks, knees up, heels up, lunges, step cross (grapevine),
mambo, cha-cha-cha, etc..
- Invented movements (Dare to create your own moves and once you get
started, you will find an endless source of steps).

2) SPACE
- Orientation: front, back, side, diagonal
- Trajectories: straight, curved, broken
- Directions: forward, backward, sideways, diagonal
- Levels: high, medium, low
- Group configuration: triangle, square, diamond, etc.

3) TIME
- Type of music: beat 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, etc..
- Melody: Melody accompanying body movements
- Tempo: slow, fast, medium, increasing, decreasing

- Beats: a time, double time, half time

- Pauses
- Synchronization of group members: unison (same movements at the same
time), variations of movements at the same time (each one takes a different
action at the same time), temporal variations of the same action (work in canon)

4) ENERGY
- Weak
- Normal
- Strong
- Increasing / Decreasing

5) SET AND COSTUMES

- Scenary: try to define the stage space that you are going to use and always
work with these dimensions. Think of objects that can help in what you want to
convey (fabrics, panels, paintings, slides, ...)
- Lighting: if used, lighting will always help you create a suitable environment or
a mood atmosphere.
- Costume: in line with choreography and not restricting free movement. Do not
forget to have a final fitting before the performance.
- Makeup.
