On 25th April every year, tens of
thousands of New Zealanders observe
ANZAC day with reverence at home
and far across the oceans at Gallipoli,
Turkey. This is the day the nation
remembers her forefathers (many of
who never returned home) who fought
in wars far away from home in the two
World Wars and in other campaigns
in more recent times. ANZAC Day
builds bridges across communities
and unites generations of Kiwis, who
gather at war memorials all over the
land to commemorate those who gave
their lives for their country, to honour
those war veterans who made it back
home and to pay tribute to the serving
members of the Armed Forces.
Anzac Day is seen and celebrated today
as marking a very important episode
in New Zealand’s history. Official
publications state that the Gallipoli
campaign helped New Zealand define
itself as a nation, in that after Gallipoli,
New Zealand had a greater confidence
in its distinct identity and a greater
pride in the international contribution
it could make. Further, it is also held
that the mutual respect earned during
the fighting formed the basis of the
close ties with Australia that continue
today. Government officials from
Australia and New Zealand as well
as most of the last surviving Gallipoli
veterans, and many Australian and
New Zealand tourists travel to Turkey

One of the largest sectors to be hit by
these changes is our tourism industry.
It is therefore no surprise that the
tourism sector has been critical of the
proposed law changes as these changes
will cause significant problems for our
country’s tourism.
Changes to the rest and meal breaks
mean that employers can no longer
request their employees for flexibility in
break times.
The flexible relationship that
employees and employers used to
mutually benefit from will now be
based on laws and legislations.
Tourism as we all know is made up of a
wide range of services that are required
during different times of the day and
different days of the week, hence this
sector requires flexibility.

Jenny Salesa on finding solutions to
issues faced by the ethnic community.
The Labour government is committed,
as always, to work at the grassroots
level and bring up issues to the
decision making level. Now that we are
in Government, we have a mandate
and a responsibility to work together
that everyone takes rest and meal
breaks at the same time is impractical
for an industry that deals with
international visitors.
It’s also telling that the tourism
industry identifies that the 90 day

the opposite direction than the
Government intends.
The tourism sector employs eight per
cent of our population. It is responsible

sector has made it clear that it is a
business risk for them to employ
people. Their voice must be heard.
It is now up to this union driven
Government to listen and engage with
an industry that employs a significant
number of New Zealanders.

NZ People’s Party marching for candidates.
Mr. Anil Sharma, General Secretary spoke to Erum Ali from The Indian News in a special interview about the plans for New Zealand People’s
Party. He said that people are now aware about the presence of NZPP and the work we are doing. There is a growing awareness of the party
among different factions of society. This is a party for all the people from every nationality and every country and not just for the immigrants
alone. He said that he is not disheartened that the party did not get enough votes in the last election as they started very late, roughly two
months before the elections. Now, more and more people want to join the party and are showing interest in taking it ahead.

is formed. Firstly, what is the objective
of the party, what is it based on, what

have. But he said New Zealand People’s
party as a new party did a good job.
For a new party to come, there must be
a need and supply and there is room
right now for a strong third party to
form, a party with an edge. People
come to this country from many places
in the world but the power here is
unbalanced. People, especially the
immigrants are powerless. There is
hardly any balanced representation for
them at any level.
Both National and Labour sadly have
not been able to understand the woes
of these families. These are the people
who come here with children, hopes
and promises of a beautiful, new life
after leaving everything including their
cultural ties, their social ties, their land
and their people. That’s why we need
a political group that can compete for
the rights of these people. We cannot
be silent. We wish other people will
also join us. We need more people
to make this change. We need more
people who think at the same platform,
have the passion, and can stand up for
the rights for others who come from
different ethnicities. That is the party
that will have a future. A party that can
understand the aim of these people
who are currently completely neglected
by the government. The balance
right now is very delicate. There is a
strong chance for NZPP to change the
way things are in the next elections.
People really want a change. They are
looking for the third force. There is a
vacuum. We can fill that gap and make
a difference.
Mr. Anil said that policy, people and
money are the biggest resource for
making a party. We should keep
working towards this goal of making our
party grow with our collective resources.
He mentioned that digital, TV, radio
and print, all forms of media are very
powerful and we as NZPP must not shy
away from any medium of publicity.
We need to be present everywhere and
create awareness of the issues that we
are working for. We are here to serve
and the message must reach the people.
Mr. Anil said that many people have
come up to him to explain why they are
with National or Labour. And that is
partly because they don’t have a choice.
We must give people an alternative to
choose a third party.
He said that there is a gap and we must
fill that gap. We can only do that if we
can reach the masses. We need to be
that third front and only by going to
people, meeting them from every nook
and corner of the country, can we be
impactful. That is the change we need
to bring. We need to communicate how
we will be a transparent government.
We will be talking about equality and
the need to reach out starting from the
grassroots. There is a lot of exploitation
happening in the local businesses
and employment sectors. It is simply
because people are desperate and very
vulnerable right now. A lot must be
done to create a strong third front. We
are focussed and will be participating
consistently across every community
gathering. We are at a basic stage. We
need more minds. More volunteers,
to centralise and create a structure.
We are doing a lot of hard work in
the community. We should all move
forward together and achieve this for
the community.
We will be going door to door to touch
the lives of our people. And the need is
to give back to society. He is also of the
opinion that we must be able to reach
out and connect with everyone.
He stressed the need for a deadline
to start getting the prominent people
like doctors, social workers and
other public figures. We are going
to select candidates and formally
make a process to give them their
constituencies so that they can start
working with issues of the people from
their respective regions. So, we are
going to achieve better results as we
are catering to becoming a party for
all, not just for the immigrants alone.
We will be having people from diverse
backgrounds in this party. There will be
candidates to represent the people of as
many countries as possible like India,
China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Philippines,
Iran, Iraq, Nepal, Fiji, Brazil, UK, US,
Africa, New Zealand and so on.
We will have the candidates based on
their practical experience, community
experience and they will be finalised by
the select committee.
We are all for a united front and
NZPP has their priorities in place.
Safer communities, law and order
and affordable housing are the most
important policies of NZPP. We need
unity. We need to have a fair advantage
and be able to extend the same rights to
everyone. It is because of our colour and
our accent that we are differentiated.
We are fragmented right now but we
need to be united to make a better New
Zealand. Unity can make a big impact.
We need make it an all-inclusive society
by having the right candidates.
We want to welcome candidates with
open arms, it could be people who

are from an experienced political
background, or even people who are
compete novices. We are welcoming
teachers, doctors, people from business
backgrounds and any one who has a
community presence, flair for social
connections, people who are eloquent
speakers, people who can understand
other people. Most importantly people
with clean backgrounds, good and
sound characters and willing to stay
committed to the party.
Mr. Anil also added that we should
now start building a pool of candidates
though a process that will be managed
by a group of members and will then
go through the selection committee.
A candidate pool must be created, by
building a strong number of members,
so that we can recruit as many
candidates as possible.
Once we select 64 candidates, each
candidate can gather a handful of
voters, we can garner a substantial
number of votes. That is the process
and the plan. Candidates from all over
the country are going to be recruited
because of the interest being shown
from a lot of people. 20 to 30 candidates
will be recruited over the next two or
three months.

Vehicle Crimes
Reports of theft from motor vehicles is
one of the most common complaints
received by police on a daily basis
and accounts for a high percentage of
property crime in New Zealand yearly.
Theft from vehicles usually involves small
dollar values in terms of the property
stolen, but they take up considerable
policing resources and increase
residents’ fear of crime. Recurring theft
from vehicles in a residential street can
erode residents’ feelings of safety and
security as well as their confidence in
police and other authorities.
The most common types of property
stolen are phones, bags, sunglasses,
sporting equipment, GPS, books and
laptops just to name a few. Basically
if you leave any property in your car
on display, expect it to go. It is not a
matter of if it will happen, but when.

Samaria chose to sail in the open fleet to learn more

class of boats as she was getting taller and heavier
for the Optimist. She also wanted to get better in
the sport and be more competitive and learn more,
though she is 13 years old and is legally allowed to sail
the optimist till she is15 years of age.
She has most recently been invited to participate
in the NZIODA Girls Development Team by the
President of the club David Kayrouz. This team has
been selected from the top 100 female rankings
creating an opportunity to be a part of the group
devoted to promoting greater participation by
women in competitive sailing. The training program
will be established with coaches Libby Porter and
another (TBA) and a team manager (TBA) to fit
around the girls other sailing/team commitments.

My husband and I own a piece of land
in Punjab. My husband died some
years ago and left a Will made in NZ
in which he has left his share to me. I
now want to sell this flat. How do I go
about it?

I presume your husband’s Will has been
validly made under NZ law. On the basis
of his Will, you may be able to get the
mutation of the land done in your sole
name with the land revenue authority
in Punjab. If that is done, then you can
sell the land without any problem as
you will be the sole owner. A buyer may
however ask for a no-objection affidavit
from the other legal heirs confirming
that they have no objection to the land
being sold by you.
If the land revenue authority does not
agree to the mutation, you will need to
apply to the District Court in Punjab to
get the Will probated. A NZ Will can
be probated in India but you will need
to engage a local lawyer and the entire
process could take a few years.

payment before he ships the goods.
How do I secure my advance?

transactions people do not prefer to
use Letters of Credit. If the transaction
value is small, you could do some
diligence on the seller (ask for other
people in NZ he has sold to) and if his
credentials are good, you could pay
some advance. A lot of trade is carried
out through trust and not everybody
is a crook. You will have to take some
initial risk which you could minimise
by negotiating a lower advance or even
trying out a smaller shipment.

sold and for this you can approach the
building manager as they keep a record
of the sale, or you will have to inspect
the records at the Sub registrar’s office.
Then, confront your brother and ask
him for your rightful share. If he doesn’t
pay, you can file a criminal complaint
to the Police against your brother for
cheating and forgery. This may initially
be difficult for you but your brother can
get arrested and if convicted, go to jail
for quite a few years.

turns out for
Turban Day
It was a unique affair for
Aucklanders who assembled on
April 21st at the Aotea centre
to commemorate the Auckland
Turban Day 2018. The visitors
were invited to tie a turban, a
core piece of Sikh identity. The
event was organised by Sikh
Youth New Zealand and Khalsa
foundation to educate the New
Zealand public about Sikh
faith and inform them about
the distinct turbans donned by
Sikh men and women, in an
interactive and fun manner.
The event is also an attempt
to reduce the chances of
discrimination and bullying due to
ignorance about the turban.
The Association has been
organising Turban Day since 2016
and the 2018 Auckland Turban
day was the third event held in
the city. Around 300 turbans in
different colours were prepared
for the event, which were donated
by various individuals and groups.
Each one costs about $15-30.
All the visitors were entertained
through traditional Sikh art
forms and the tea counter
provided mouth-watering ‘chai’
for the visitors. SYNZ and Khalsa
foundation is planning to organise
more Turban Day events in
Wellington, Christchurch and Bay
of Plenty soon.

Raising Human Consciousness

It is simply because we have created
societies without any focus on the
inward nature of a human being. We
have created societies essentially based
on our survival mechanisms. When
survival is the only issue, we are as good
as any animal. We are always fighting
and it is survival of the fittest. But
there is an innate human nature which
is capable of a certain inclusiveness.
There is a certain possibility in a human
being that he can include everything
and everybody as a part of himself.
Unless this inclusiveness is brought
to one’s experience, our attempts to
fix humanity with morality, ethics
and values will not work. The highest
sense of morals, ethics and values has
gone into almost every human being,
but you know it has not worked. The
world is living proof of that. It is just
that it seems to be an easier substitute
because raising human consciousness
seems to be a far cry. It is not a far cry.
It is a far cry right now only because we
have not invested any time, resources
or energies in that direction. If you
look at any society on the planet today,
individual people, societies, nations
and humanity as a whole have not

consciousness. They have not made
any investment in the essential sense of
wellbeing in a human being. It is only
by chance that a few individuals go that
way out of their own intelligence and
longing, but nations and societies have
not made any investment.
We have made investment
for economic wellbeing,
physical wellbeing, political
wellbeing and other things,
but have we made any
investment for human
consciousness to rise?
That is why it looks like
a far cry. Suppose there
was no investment at all
towards regular education
in a particular country,
education would look
like a far cry. This is also
just like that. This has not
happened because there is
no investment.

G enerally in most
societies, people are
trying to take a human
being to a certain height
through moral and
ethical standards. Or in
other words, from the
day a child is born, we
are trying to tell him he
must be good. What does
this mean? Somewhere,
essentially we believe that
the Creator has made a
mistake and you are going
to correct it. Somewhere
we believe, essentially all
human beings are born
bad and we have to fix
them. It is not so.
Today, the most important work on the planet is to raise human consciousness.
We are at a certain significant time in human history because for the first time,
as humanity, we have the necessary capability, technology and resources to solve
almost every human problem – fundamental problems like nourishment, health,
education – on this planet; never before this was possible. The only thing that is
missing is human consciousness. Raising human consciousness does not need any
external inputs. All it takes is to make human beings willing.

Flitter is passionate about. In March
he produced AI-DAY, New Zealand’s

powered technology right here in NZ.

I’m think that, by 2025, voice activated
devices and bots will become so
prevalent, powerful, and so useful in all
areas of business and personal lives that
we won’t need smartphones anymore.
Keyboards will be collectors items as
Natural Language Processing becomes
the global standard for interacting with
a machine.
Computers will be a thing of the past as
intelligence machines are everywhere.
The proliferation of connected devices
and sensors will generate unimaginable
data that will change the way we
process information. Instead of sending
data to the cloud for processing this
will be done on the device itself, in the
car, the fridge or your smart watch. This
‘Edge Computing’ could one day take
over cloud computing.
But once keyboard warriors move to
voice control I believe people will get
sick of everyone talking to themselves,
to hearing every command people
are are trying to achieve. That will see
a quick shift to ‘Thought Activated
Devices’. These headsets that will one
day be simple implants listen to the
electrical signals your brain produces
when you think something.

About Naumi
The concept of brand Naumi as the name
suggests is a young lady who is always
speaking to you. She will never slip an envelope
underneath a door in the hotel. She will say why
are you checking out and ask you why are you
leaving me ? There are signs all over where she’s
saying something that makes you giggle. There
is a difference, there is humour in it, to engage
guests and make people remember it. After all
hospitality is all about having fun.
All of the Naumis are very different in terms of
aesthetic and just like a woman changes with
her age, so do the Naumis. New Zealand would
be a 27 year old Naumi. The Naumi in Singapore
is 33 years of age. The DNA is the same but her
tonality might be a little different. Her staff
might be dressed differently too. Her rooms
may be different, her rates might be different
but the commonality is that there is a lot of
design, a lot of soul and a lot of personality. One
thing is guaranteed - it’s definitely not going to
be safe. It is here to raise some eyebrows and it
promises to be full of adventure.

Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala
As a ten year old, his tryst with ‘The land of the long white cloud’
happened during his first school trip to Kaikora folllowed by a
fortunate family ski holiday that was to change his life forever. A
foreign country can be very daunting in terms of experience. But
to this young man, New Zealand gives a sense of belonging – a
sense of arrival, of coming HOME.
To top it up, the people being so warm and friendly, it was
an absolutely natural decision for Naumi Hotels to come
here says Gaurang Jhunjhunwala. Erum Ali meets the
creator of Naumi Hotels, and talks to him about this
colossal baby which was born after a lot sweat,
blood and tears. But to him seeing Naumi today
is well worth all the pain. Naumi is here to add
vibrancy to the landscape of New Zealand.
About you
I was very interested in design, architecture as
well as entrepreneurship. So this is one business
where both my passions got married. Born and
raised in Hong Kong, he completed schooling
in Singapore and then went to college in Boston
where Family enterprising and Artistry were his
two concentrations. With two Naumi Hotels in
Singapore, one in Sydney and one in Auckland,
he is instrumental in pushing borders and going
across International waters dealing with assets
and acquisitions primarily.
Focus and strategy
Gaurang chuckles saying, “I’m used to clearing
up the hotel messes and making them sexy
again by adding Botox treatments, making them
undergo plastic surgeries and boosting the
room rates. To take a hotel from 3.5 Star to a 5
Star rating, we spend a lot of money on health,
safety and compliance. Tremendous amounts
of hard work go in because we want our staff
and guests to be safe. Unlike a lot of other hotels
who are only management companies, we can
put in so much more capital to do these jobs
being the owners and operators.”

Designer Inspired Suite Rooms - Eden & Nirwana
Design palette -
The Auckland Naumi is inspired by the Tui bird
and the artistic pallete flows with the presence
and forms of this native bird throughout the
hotel. There’s the polka dots ‘Dottie suite’
which is my favourite, there’s the ‘Ziggie suite’
too. Dottie was inspired by Yayoi Kusama the
Japanese artist, She not only has a colourful
but also a very interesting past. So we actually
supported her obliteration room at the
Auckland Art Gallery and we were the official
art sponsors for her for three months. One room
is so chevron and patternised, so we decided to
do the other one completely opposite. If you will
notice, we have put some dots on the screens,
so when the sun shines on the windows of that
room on a beautiful, gorgeous day like this, you
can see the patternistaion on the floor. It is like
watching art live in action.
Bespoke experience -
We share very different aesthetics, between
different generations of being a family of
hoteliers. Instead of a lot more traditional rooting
in design, I am a little wild and like more fun in
my designs. Nowadays people really want micro
experiences and everything must be tailored to
their needs. We want to push the boundaries. You
should be able to say - you either love it or hate it.
Nothing in between. Everything here is filled with
that bespoke experience.

Looking ahead –
In New Zealand the tourism arrivals are
growing by 11%. The supply versus demand
has a significant 3 percent shortage. It should
not cannibalise its own tourism. Countries like
Singapore have circumvented it by adding new
inventories. New Zealand also needs to allocate
and give a lot of opportunity to new investors in
hotels and operators to come in and showcase
their brands.
Share a secret –
The success of the launch showed me that New
Zealand is ready for a lot of wild things. We also
have a beautiful English garden where people
can have a stroll and there are a 193 rooms or
nests all around it. Here we can host fashion
shows, weddings and tea parties with privacy
as it is completely cut off from the rest of the
hotel wing.
What’s next -
I love Wellington, the vibe, the people, the
crowd. I like cities that you can walk. It humbles
the city down as well. It gives perspective to
everyone. There are two Naumi Hotels coming
up in Wellington by 2019, one of which will
have a heritage wing. There’s also Christchurch,
Queenstown and Auckland City on the cards.

Get the real taste of India at
Bobby Arora, after having created quite a stir with the
traditional Indian flavours in his Anzac Avenue Little India
in Auckland, went on to open Little India in Glen Eden with
the same zest and aplomb.

From the partly open-plan kitchen inside, his second

restaurant, which is run by an equally well-trained team
– one can see Bobby’s passion in creating a warm and
welcoming ambience along with mouth watering fare that
the patrons have fallen in love with.

Bobby belives running a local
business enables him to contribute
to the local community which
is very satisfying for him. The
restaurant engages in mutliple
aspects of fund raising in forms
of fund rasing dinners, vouchers,
supplying food at cost to local
school fairs and sponsoring local
sports clubs.
An amber glow across the wood
furniture, outdoor perching tables
and Haveli - like arches are all
inspired by the young influences
from New Delhi. This is a project
from the heart of a passionate
foodie and chef.
In a space that feels as decadent
as an Indian aristocratic chamber
– imagine being indulged with the
Maharaja Banquet - their signature
experience in a setting of carved
brass panels camouflaged by warm
and cosy seating, and soft lighting.
At Little India, the incredibly
friendly staff serve dishes that the
Little India cooks have created
under the guidance of Bobby.
The result - well-balanced, and
flavour-packed dishes! The
seasoned kulcha breads, hot and
buttery from the tandoors fired
by charcoal served with butter
chicken (the whole world loves it)
along with tandoori mushrooms
and malai tikka or achaari tikka
with mint chutney, and rogan
josh finished with deliciously
flavoured mango kulfi is quite an
artful culinary experience. Choose
from the A la carte menu and
settle in for the evening, kicking
things off with some great wine
selections from the bar. The great
combination of your favourite
beer and a curry gets a smart
21st-century thumbs up.
Little India goes on to prove that
the simplest things, can have the
most impact. If you are heading
off to the city try Little India’s
Anzac Avenue restaurant which
is a fantastic location in the CBD.
Only a short 2 minutes’ walk from
Britomart and the Spark arena. A
definite stop-over for any food lover,
must try it out.

guests but leave as friends!

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has emerged as the numero
uno on the Score Trends India chart - yet another achievement for
the artist.
Chopra has been a trailblazer in every

From the Tehran film festival AR Rehman told us how elated he feels after having
bagged two awards at the 65th National Film Awards declared on Friday - Best
Background Score for Mom, and Best Music Direction for Kaatru Veliyidai. He
says receiving the National Award is definitely special because it is awarded by our
Government. The jury is credible because of their ability to select and recognize off
beat films which gets sideline by other awards.
A Jury headed by renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur along with a 10-member-
panel comprising of screenwriter Imtiaz Hussain, lyricist Mehboob, actress
Gautami Tadimalla and Kannada director P. Sheshadri among others made the
decisions on the awards.
“I didn’t know such great films were being made in regional cinema,”
- Shekhar Kapur as he announced the awards.
Hindi cinema cannot compete with them, he said. Announcing special mention
awards, he said, “special mention award for Malayalam film Take Off and
performance by actress Parvathy.”
Rahman who was obviously elated by the awards said, “The BGM of Mom is also
my wife Saira’s favourite. When I was in Hollywood last month, she asked my agent
there to listen to it. I was surprised, because she is not somebody who says or does
anything like this. She screamed with joy when she heard that I had won the award
for mom. Speaking to The Indian News about this special honour, Saira told us that
the day she heard the composition of the background score she said had predicted
with one hundred percent conviction that he would win the National award.

you can effortlessly make a brilliant

an elaborate one. What I love about

fragrant and mild, the dish is simple
