2. 2. What is Mental Health? Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It
affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make
choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through
adulthood.
3. 3. Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior
could be affected. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including: • Biological factors, such as
genes or brain chemistry • Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse • Family history of mental health
problems
4. 4. Early Warning Signs • Eating or sleeping too much or too little • Pulling away from people and usual
activities • Having low or no energy • Feeling numb or like nothing matters • Having unexplained aches and
pains • Feeling helpless or hopeless • Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than usual

9. 9. Eustress Eustress, or positive stress, has the following characteristics: • Motivates, focuses energy. • Is
short-term. • Is perceived as within our coping abilities. • Feels exciting. • Improves performance.
10. 10. Distress Distress, or negative stress, has the following characteristics: • Causes anxiety or concern. •
Can be short- or long-term. • Is perceived as outside of our coping abilities. • Feels unpleasant. • Decreases
performance. • Can lead to mental and physical problems.
11. 11. Examples of negative personal stressors include: • The death of a spouse. • Filing for divorce. • Losing
contact with loved ones. •The death of a family member. • Hospitalization (oneself or a family member). •
Injury or illness (oneself or a family member). • Being abused or neglected. • Separation from a spouse or
committed relationship partner.

Characteristics of Mental Health
Mental health is more than just the absence of mental illness. It includes how you feel about yourself and how you adjust
to life events. However, the National Mental Health Association cites 10 characteristics of people who are mentally
healthy.

1. They feel good about themselves.


2. They do not become overwhelmed by emotions, such as fear, anger, love, jealousy, guilt, or anxiety.
3. They have lasting and satisfying personal relationships.
4. They feel comfortable with other people.
5. They can laugh at themselves and with others.
6. They have respect for themselves and for others even if there are differences.
7. They are able to accept life’s disappointments.
8. They can meet life’s demands and handle their problems when they arise.
9. They make their own decisions.
10. They shape their environment whenever possible and adjust to it when necessary.

Mentally healthy persons have a positive self concept. Having a positive self concept makes way for an objective judgment. This ability
is also called RATIONALITY, GOOD SENSE, and even COMMON SENSE . 6. 2. Taking responsibility for yourself They do NOT
blame others for what happens to them nor do they see themselves as victims in their world. THEY MAKE DECISIONS ON HOW TO

Adapting to Changes They Understand that learning to adapt can be a painful process. They accept that change is a natural way in daily
living They adapt to new situations by changing what can be changed and accepting what cannot be changed
