 BEGINNERS’ LINGUISTICS WORKSHOP

The Department of Linguistics, University of Mumbai, is pleased to announce that

the registration for the annual Beginners' Linguistics Workshop to be held during
23-28 December is now open. The workshop will prepare school and college
students for the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL).

About IOL
It is one of 12 International Science Olympiads. Students from 8th to 12th standard
may participate in it. It involves solving the world’s toughest puzzles in language
and Linguistics (for more information, see: http://linguistics.ucsc.edu/about/what-is-
linguistics.html). India has been competing in the IOL since 2009 and over the years,
has bagged a few silver and bronze medals and other accolades at the IOL. More

Most importantly, solving these puzzles

 requires
the students to apply nothing more than their abilities of logical reasoning, patient
work and out-of-the-box thinking;
 and in return, offers
the huge advantage of getting a glimpse into the inner workings of various languages
and gaining a better understanding of language as a phenomenon.

The workshop that we have organized is the first step in this direction. It will be
followed by two phases of the Panini Linguistics Olympiad. See more information

About the workshop-

It offers the additional advantage of learning systematically how to analyze
languages and introduces Linguistics as a discipline and various applications
of it (for more information, see http://www.linguisticsociety.org/resource/linguistics-
profession).

The participants will get to know intricacies of various languages and find out a few
ways in which all the languages are similar to each other and a few aspects in which
they differ from each other, giving them an edge in learning and working with a new
language better.

Who can participate : Anyone of and above the age of 13 years. Parents and
teachers are encouraged to attend this workshop.

Timing : 9 am to 5:30 pm
Venue : Department of Linguistics, Ranade Bhavan, Kalina Campus, University of
Mumbai, Vidyanagari.

Fees : 500 Rs. (to be paid at the venue of the workshop)
