Gary Morin
Keynetix Ltd.
Learning Objectives
 Learn how to create a geotechnical project and import data
 Learn how to create and position feature lines correctly
 Learn how to use break lines to model geology
 Learn how to use boundaries to only show specific areas of geology
Description
The class will use the completely revised Geotechnical Module within AutoCAD Civil 3D software. The
class is aimed at expert users who want to learn how, through standard AutoCAD Civil 3D functionality,
they can mold and manipulate surfaces to model geology. In this hands-on lab you will learn how to
model multiple geotechnical lenses and pockets of geology. The class will take you through the steps
required using standard AutoCAD Civil 3D software to create feature lines that will be used as breaklines
and boundaries to almost magically model the geology. You can use these methods over and over again
to model a wide range of subsurface geology. You can ultimately use the model geology surfaces within
Building Information Modeling (BIM) as is, or you can convert them into AutoCAD software solids and
use them in a wide range of software.

Learn how to create a geotechnical project and import data

The aim of this class is to take hole data stored in the CSV files, import them and model the resulting
information.

THE MODELED GEOLOGY

The Autodesk Geotechnical Module for AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 was a total rewrite with new concepts
and workflows. The 2016 version saw the introduction of Projects to store geotechnical data, the project
data can then be quickly accessed in any drawing.
In this session we are going to look at how to create a project and import data into the Geotechnical
Module.

The basics
Three steps to importing data:
1. Connect to the appropriate database
2. Create or open a project
3. Import geotechnical data

Connecting to a database
Before any geotechnical data can be imported into the Geotechnical Module a connection to a database
must first be made, by default the installation process will install a database on your local computer
named Geotechnical Module.

Command: KNX_CONNECT

1. From the Geotechnical Module ribbon click Connect to display the Login dialog box.

2
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

FIGURE 1: THE CONNECT LOGIN DIALOG

2. From the Database drop down list select the Geotechnical Module database to connect to.
The Username and Password can be ignored as these are only used when connecting to a
HoleBASE SI database.

For HoleBASE SI users, Manage Connections can be used to create connections to existing HoleBASE SI
databases

3. Click Login
The Projects dialog will be displayed, listing all projects are available to you within the database.

FIGURE 2: THE PROJECT LIST DIALOG

For existing projects already setup containing geotechnical data, pressing OK will create the 3D
boreholes and location symbols for all locations within the selected project.

3
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

Create a project
In our example we are going to create a new project to contain our geotechnical data.
1. In the Projects List dialog press Create, to display the Create Project dialog

FIGURE 3: CREATING A PROJECT

2. Enter a unique Project ID: AU2015 001
3. Enter a unique Name: AU example site
4. Enter a Status, pick Open
5. Enter a Category, pick Default
6. The remaining fields are optional, but can be used in the Project List to help filter and search
projects
7. Press Save to create the new project.
The Projects dialog will be redisplayed listing the new project.
8. Select the new AU2015 001 project and press Okay

This will connect the current drawing to the selected project.

Note: Once a drawing has been connected to a project the connection cannot be cut, a new drawing will
have to be created.

Importing the geotechnical data

Now that we have a project created we are ready to import the geotechnical data.
Two main types of geotechnical data can be imported AGS and CSV.
The new Geotechnical Module 2016 works with an updated CSV file format as well as the older style
used in the previous versions.
In this lab we will be working with the new format, which uses the Default mapping:
Location Details.csv: this is required and it contains the hole location details

4
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

Field Geological Descriptions.csv: this is also required and contains the geological Strata information
Orientation and Inclination.csv: this file is optional and is used for inclined holes.
See Appendix A for additional information on the CSV files.

Important: the filenames, column headings and case must be identical to that shown, failure to use
identical names and case will result in errors and warnings.

Import Geotechnical Data

With a project created and connected the geotechnical data can now be imported.

Command: KNX_IMPORT

1. From the Geotechnical Module ribbon click Import to display the Import wizard.

THE IMPORT WIZARD STEP ONE

2. Ensure the file format selected is CSV

3. Mapping format should be set to Default
4. Delimiter should be set to Comma (,)
5. Quote Character should be Double Quote (“)

THE IMPORTED BOREHOLES

Changing the view to 3D will display cylinders representing the 3D boreholes together with the strata
banding.

Explore the geotechnical data

Now with the data imported, we use the Shaded visual style to start visualizing the data.

THE BOREHOLES CONTAINING CLAY

Notice the Clay, colored blue, the areas highlighted in red show the Clay under the Made Ground (red),
the area highlighted in yellow shows the Clay under the Gravel (yellow).
On the left we have an area of Clay sitting underneath the Made Ground and on top of the Gravel, there
is also a similar lens in the middle. On the right there is also a lens between two boreholes, but this time
the lens lays under the Gravel on top of the Sandstone (Cyan). In the tutorial the geology codes are
represented by:

8
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

 Clay: CL
 Made Ground: MG
 Gravel: GV
 Sandstone: ST

Use shift and middle button to do a constrained orbit to better understand the position and layout of
the boring information.

Learn how to create and position feature lines correctly

This section will look at how you can manipulate surfaces by creating feature lines in the correct
locations.

Warning: this hands-on lab teaches the methods and commands to manipulate Civil 3D surfaces
representing strata, it does not teach you how to model geology, you will need to attend a course about
geology or geotechnical engineering to fully understand that.

Use as many sources as you can to ascertain information on the underlying geology, these sources may
include:

GEOLOGY MAPS, PAPER, SCANNED AND/OR DIGITAL

 Geology Maps, Paper, Scanned and/or digital

10
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

 Web Mapping Services

 Photos
 Aerial Photography
 Local Knowledge
 Geophysics
 Down hole information

What does a feature line represent

Generally we use feature lines to represent outcrops or subcrops of geology, basically the extents of the
geology on the site.

OUTCROP AND SUBCROP LINES DRAWN WITH FEATURE LINES

The 3D lines drawn represent the X, Y extents of the geology and also very importantly the Z, the
elevation of the geology.
The feature lines can be created using any method, however this method works well:
 Draw polylines in plan representing the extents
 Then convert into feature lines and assign the elevation from an already created surface,
normally the base surface of the geology above.
Work from ground surface downwards, when assigning elevations it is always best to use an existing
surface, so if you work from the ground surface downwards generally speaking you will always have the
surface of the strata or ground level above to use.

Order of Strata
It is very important to be aware of the order of the strata in the area being
modeled.
Turning on the Plan Log Strips in the Location Manager will give a quick
reference to the order of the strata.

11
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

Feature line clashes

Feature lines can clash, if a feature line overlays another feature line in plan, they will interact with each
other and will change elevation,
see image 2. Notice how the
feature line running from left to
right is snapped down onto the
other feature line.
Placing the feature lines on
different Sites will prevent this
from happening, see image 3.

Split feature lines that cross different geology

If a feature line crosses from one geology to
another, when they are used as break lines within
the surfaces, it will cause surface to extend into the
other strata, corrupting the model. It is also
difficult to assign the correct elevation. So always
use a separate feature line for each geology the
modeling line crosses.

Snap to edge of surface

Snap the line being drawn to the edge of the strata,
otherwise additional work will need to be done to
tidy up the resultant model surfaces.

Don’t overhang feature lines

This will cause problems later when we make the feature line into a break line, it will cause the surface
to deform out of shape, unless the overhang has the right elevation.

Exercise 2: Preparing the drawing for modeling

Before we start modeling we will first set up the drawing with the appropriate views and profiles to
model with.

12
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

Exercise 3: Creating the feature lines

In this exercise we are first going to draw polylines representing the crop lines of the geology being
modeled, we will then convert them into feature lines assigning the correct elevation.

Outline Steps:
1. Connect to project if required
2. Draw polylines at the extents of the geology
3. Convert to feature lines and assign elevation

THE LOCATION OF THE CROP LINES

Detailed steps
1. Open exercise 3.DWG in the folder:

C:\Datasets\Hands–On–Labs\ CI10339-L Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

2. Ensure Nearest snap is toggled on

17

3. From the Home tab, pick

to draw a polyline from Point 1 to Point

2 representing the extents of the Clay

Ensure both the start and end of the

line are snapped to the surface edge

Note the blue clay bands in the strips in

the area above the polyline

4. Draw another polyline around BH4 to represent the

extents of the clay lens in the middle of the site

Press C and enter to close the polyline

5. Finally repeat the process for the lens at the bottom of

the site, drawing a closed polyline around boreholes BH5
and BH16

Three polylines have now been drawn representing the crop extents of the clay geology.
Currently only the X and Y coordinates are correct, the polylines need to be converted into
feature lines and have the correct elevation assigned to them.

We will convert to feature lines in two stages, first the two polylines for the Clay sitting directly
below the Made Ground, and then the polyline at the bottom the site for the Clay below the
Gravel

18
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

6. From the drawing select the two polylines for the crop extents of the Clay below Made Ground (
MG - Base)

POLYLINES TO SELECT
7. From the Home tab feature line list pick Create Feature Line from Objects and select the
polylines just drawn.

8. In the Feature Line dialog box pick Create New Site.

19
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

9. In the new dialog enter the site name of MG - Base and press Okay to return to the Feature Line
dialog.

It is best to place feature lines on separate sites to prevent

the feature lines from clashing.

10. Toggle OFF Erase existing entities.

11. Toggle ON Assign elevation.

12. Press OK to continue.

13. In the Assign Elevation dialog, ensure From Surface is

selected and from the drop-down list select MG - Base.

14. Press OK to continue.

15. The polyline will be converted into a feature line using the elevation from the MG - Base surface

16. Now repeat step 6 to 15 for the clay lens below Gravel

a. Select the polyline the Clay extents at the bottom of the site

b. In Create Feature Line from Objects created a new site GV - Base

c. Assign the elevation to GV - Base

20
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

THE FEATURE LINES REPRESENTING THE CROP EXTENTS OF THE CLAY GEOLOGY SHOULD NOW BE CREATED.

21
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

Learn how to use break lines to model geology

The next stage in modeling the geology is to mold the surfaces by using the crop lines (feature lines)
created above as breaklines in the Civil 3D surfaces.
The feature lines created are already at the correct elevation, so they just need to be added as break
lines to the relevant surfaces.
In this exercise we’re going to do it twice, once for the two Clay crop lines sitting below the Made
Ground and again for the single Clay crop line below the Gravel.

Confirm the strata surfaces to use

When modeling the extents of the geology it is normal to have to add the feature lines as break lines for
up to 4 surfaces at any one location.
In the example of the Clay below Made Ground, the four
Civil 3D surfaces to edit are:
 MG - base
 CL - top
 CL - base
 GV - top

For the Clay below Gravel the four Civil 3D surfaces will be:
 GV - base
 CL - top
 CL - base
 ST - top

It is very important that the break lines are added to the correct surfaces. Picking the wrong surfaces will
distort the geology model.

Exercise 4: Adding the break lines

Outline steps
1. Add Feature Lines as break lines for Clay below Made Ground
2. Add Feature Lines as break lines for Clay below Gravel

Detailed steps
1. Open exercise 4.DWG in the folder:

C:\Datasets\Hands–On–Labs\ CI10339-L Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

22
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

17. Select the two top feature lines for

the Clay below Made Ground

The ribbon bar should change to

the Multiple Feature Line context
ribbon with Add to Surface as
Breakline command.

If the command cannot be seen it

is because other items have been
selected in the drawing.

18. From the ribbon, pick the Add to Surface as Breakline command

19. In the dialog select MG - Base and press OK

The AutoCAD Civil 3D surface MG – Base is updated following the path given by the two feature
lines

20. Repeat steps 3-4 for the following surfaces:

 CL – top
 CL – base
 GV – top
The profile view should now look
similar to this, the Clay under the
Made Ground should look almost
correct.

21. Deselect the current Feature Lines and pick the one for the Clay under Gravel at the bottom of
the site.

22. Repeat steps 3 to 4 for the following surfaces:

GV - base
CL - top
CL - base
ST - top
The Profile View should now look similar to below, both the shape of the Clay and the surrounding
geology should look appropriate:

23
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

PROFILE VIEW SHOWING THE CLAY LENSES

However if we take a look at the 3D model we will see there are still problems, the Clay geology
appearing in places it should not occur, going through boreholes that do not contain clay.

SURFACE BOUNDARIES NEED TO BE ADDED

In the next session we will look at how to use boundaries to only show the geology in the locations we
want to see it.

24
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

Learn how to use boundaries to only show specific areas of geology

The next stage in modeling the geology is to create the surface boundaries to only show the areas of the
geology we want to see.
The general principle is to hide the complete surface and then use Show boundaries to expose the areas
required.

THE SURFACE BOUNDARIES REQUIRED TO MODEL THE GEOLOGY

The Hide boundary can be any polyline larger than the surface to hide, the Show boundaries should be
closed feature lines where possible, however this is not always possible. In the above example the
feature lines created to define the lenses in the middle and at the bottom of the site can be used,
however the Feature Line at the top of the site cannot be directly used as it does not define a closed
boundary.
Where possible it is beneficial to use the same Feature Lines used to define the extents of the geology
for the show boundaries, this gives the added benefit of when the Feature Line is edited, both The Break
Lines and the boundaries are updated at the same time making it easier to manipulate the modeled
geology.
For the Clay geology at the top of the site a new closed Polyline for the geology extents will have to be
created for use as the Show boundary.

Exercise 5: Creating the Boundaries

Outline steps
 Draw the surrounding Polyline for the Hide boundary
 Repeat for each surface

25
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

 Add the surrounding Hide boundary

 Add the inner closed Feature Lines as Show boundaries to the surface
 Draw the additional inner closed Polylines where necessary
 Add the additional inner closed Polylines as Hide boundaries to the surface

Detailed steps
1. Open exercise 5.DWG in the folder:

C:\Datasets\Hands–On–Labs\ CI10339-L Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

2. From the Home tab, pick to draw a polyline surrounding the complete site as in

the previous image.

3. From the Geotechnical Module ribbon, click Strata to display the dialog box.

4. Toggle off all surfaces so only the Clay - top is displayed.

Having just one surface displayed makes it easy to track the changes made

Note: you may have to toggle off Surfaces to enable you to select the correct feature lines

5. From the Toolspace Prospector expand Surfaces by clicking on

the + sign

6. Expand the CL – Top surface

7. Expand the Definition section in the tree

8. Right Click on Boundaries and press Add... to display the add

boundary dialog

checked On

11. Press OK and select the Polyline

surrounding the surface

12. Press Enter and add the Hide Boundary

26
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

The CL – Top surface should no longer be visible in the display

13. Right Click on Boundaries and press Add... again

14. This time set Type to Show

15. Press OK and select the two closed Feature Lines in the middle
and bottom of the site

16. Press Enter and add the new Show boundaries

THE SURFACE WILL BE DISPLAYED WITH THE TWO LENSES BEING DISPLAYED

The closed polyline for the top area of clay must now be created

17. Ensure object snap mode is set to Endpoint only

18. From the Home tab, pick and draw the

polyline carefully snapping on the existing vertices in

the feature line at the top of the site, continue and
create a closed polyline

19. Right Click on Boundaries and press Add... again

20. This time set Type to Show

27
Modeling Complex Geology in AutoCAD Civil 3D

21. Press OK and select the newly created Polyline

22. Press Enter and add the new Show boundary

The surface should be regenerated with all three clay regions being displayed

23. Repeat the steps 4 – 22 for the CL – Base surface, the existing polylines previously drawn can be
reused.

The CL – Base surface should now be modeled correctly, use the Strata Manager to display the
other geology surfaces. The geology should now be modeled correctly.

Move the Alignment to check the geology in the Profile View.
