A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN

UNDERSTANDING SOCIETY, CULTURE, AND POLITICS

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session, learners are expected to:

1. understand structural functional functionalism as one of the significant sociological theories.


2. understand the role and importance of every individual in a society.

II. CONTENT
A. Topic:
- Sociological Theories (Functionalism)
B. Learning Competencies:
- The learners compare different social forms and social organization according to their manifest
and latent functions.
- The learners analyze social structures.

A. Preparatory Activities (5mins.)

B. Development of the Lesson


1. Motivation (15mins)
1.1. The teacher will ask students to group themselves by pair.
1.2. Students will interview their partner on the habitual activities they have been doing from
the moment they wake up until bedtime. Not to waste time, while the students are doing
the activity, the teacher shall prepare the projector and the laptop for the presentation.
1.3. After the interview, the teacher will ask at least five students to share their work.
1.4. After the sharing, the teacher will show the class a video clip presentation (Nescafe’
Coffee, Para Kanino ka bumabangon?)

2. Lesson Proper (25mins)


2.1. The teacher will show students pictures of day to day activities of individuals.
2.2. The teacher will ask: “Why do we do the things we do?” At least five students shall provide
their opinion.
2.3. The teacher will explain that we do the things we do because of our society (C. Wright
Mills). Every one of us is interdependent with each other that we have different functions.
2.4. The teacher will further explain that we have different functions. The teacher shall use
concrete examples so that the students may understand the complexity of sociology.
2.5. The teacher will explain functionalism. It shall include the following pertinent concepts:
- Proponent of functionalism. (Emilé Durkheim)
- Functionalism as such.
- Manifest function
- Latent function
- Its weaknesses
- Its advantages

 Note that while the teacher is explaining the said concepts, students shall be asked pertinent
questions. Opinions of at least three students shall be asked every concept.

2.6. The teacher will ask if there are points for clarification if there is any.

3. Application (10mins)
The teacher will ask five volunteers to share their manifest and latent function.

C. Evaluation
1. The teacher will group the students. Each group must constitute four members.
2. The teacher will assign the groups to interview at least ten individuals of various works.
3. The students shall ask the manifest function and latent function of the individuals they will
interview.
4. The students will report their work on the next session.

D. Assignment
Is the concept of structural functionalism applicable in the earlier times? Explain

 The remaining 5 minutes will be used in explaining the evaluation and assignment.
 End the session with a simple prayer.
