Designing of shell and tube heat exchanger using ASPEN Plus

simulation software
Problem statement:
The process data details used for this OEL are shown in the following Table:

Table 1: Process data details

Task:

Design a shell and tube heat exchanger, with the shell side as a condenser containing a mixture of
steam and methanol, using water as a coolant. The design calculations will determine the inner
diameter of the shell, tube length and diameter and the number of tubes. The design logic will
optimize the heat transfer against the allowable pressure drop on both the shell and tube sides.

All the unknowns should be found using ASPEN PLUS Software.

Abstract:
A heat exchanger is a device designed to efficiently transfer or "exchange" heat from one matter
to another. In this problem a shell and tube heat exchanger is designed using ASPEN Plus
simulation software. Hot stream is the mixer of steam and methanol at 120℃. Water is used as a
coolant material. All the designing factors are calculated using ASPEN Plus simulation software.
The outlet temperature of hot stream is calculated using shortcut method that is 89.73℃. It has
been observed that inner diameter of the shell is 1.2m, tube length is 3.6 m, outer diameter of the
tube is 0.019 m and the number of tubes is 918.

Procedure:
In Aspen Plus simulation software under property tab three components (water, steam and
methanol) are selected. NRTL property method is selected. In simulation environment under
exchanger tab a HeatX exchanger is selected. Inlet and outlet streams are drawn, and the process
flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.

The inlet specifications of hot stream (SMH) are given in Figure 2.

Inlet specifications of cold stream are given in Figure 3.

Inlet specifications of heat exchanger are given in Figure 4.

Figure 4: Inlet specifications of heat exchanger

First shortcut method is selected to determine the outlet temperature of hot stream and then Shell
and tube is selected as shown in Figure 4 and it is converted to get the design specification of heat
exchanger. In geometry specifications under process tab process inputs are entered as shown in
Figure 5. Design specifications are given in results section.

Results:
The outlet temperature of hot stream is 89.73 ℃. Design specifications results are given in Figure
6.

Conclusion:
Shell and tube heat exchanger designing factors are successfully determined using ASPEN Plus
simulation software. From the above results we can conclude that the outlet temperature of the hot
stream is 89.73 ℃. Iinner diameter of the shell is 1.2m, tube length is 3.6 m, outer diameter of the
tube is 0.019 m and the number of tubes is 918.
