V. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Lubrcating oil system are used to lubricate and cooling the motion
of part the engine, and the main engine in this desain
recommendation dry sump for main engines operating on HFO. The
dry sump type has two oil outlets at each end of the engine. Two of
the outlets shall be connected to the system oil tank.
The lubrication system of an engine provides a supply of lubricating
oil to the various moving parts in the engine. Its main function is to
enable the formation of a film of oil between the moving parts,
which reduces friction and wear. The lubricating oil can also used a
cleaner and in some engines as a coolant.
The cylinder liner must be lubricated as well. This is so there will be
a film of oil between the piston rings and the liner and also that any
acid produced by combustion of the fuel is neutralised by the oil
and does not cause corrosion. However larger medium speed
marine diesel engines also use separate pumps to supply oil under
pressure to the cylinder liner. The oil is led through drillings onto
the liner surface where grooves distribute it circumferentially
around the liner, and the piston rings spread it up and down the
surface of the liner. A pre lub pump is sometimes fitted especially
to engines where the main pump is engine driven. This pump is
electrically driven and circulates oil around the engine prior to
starting. not only cylinder liner must be luribcate but also the
camshaft, valve inlet and outlet, sping must be lubricate.
Lubricating Oil System Component :
1) LO Main pump (engine driven)
Function : This pump is used to move the lubricating oil from
system oil tank to circulate the main engine.

2) LO Stand by pump (electrically driven)

Function : This pump is used as option for main LO to move the
luricating oil from system oil tank to circulate the main engine.

3) Pre-Lubricating Oil Pump

Function : This pump is used to lubricate the main engine
before starting and when the engine stopped.

4) Separator
Function : Separator used to separate the lubricating oil from
water content, by utilizing centrifugal caused rotaion from the
disc separator.
5) Non Return valve, straight, screw down
Function : valves are used at high pressure and direction of flow
in one direction. In Fuel oil system, this valve is used on the
outlet side of the pump.
6) Pressure Indicator
Function : Pressure indicators are used to gauge fluid pressure.
Pressure indicator placed on the suction and discharge side of
the pump.
7) Safety Valve
Function : Safety valve is used to resolve back pressure on the
discharge side of the pump when the pressure on the discharge

pump is connected to the suction side of the pump
8) Gate Valve
Function : valve is used to open and close or stop the fluid flow
in the pipe.
9) Filter
Function : Fluid is used to filter the fluid that will go into the
pump from dirt and before the lubricating oil circulated in to

1 LUBRICATING TRANSFER SYSTEM

a. Calculation of Storage Tank Capacity

The capacity of storage tank is determined by time to sailing and
oil charge if something worst happen to System Oil Tank.

LO mass = (P x SLOC x t x 10-6) + Volume System Oil Tank

P = 6000 kW
SLOC = 0.5 g/kWh
t = 168 hour
ρ = 0.89 ton/m3
V Syst Oil Tank = 8.10 m3

LO mass = (6000 x 0.5 x 168 x 10-6) + 10.2

= 8.604 ton

LO volume = LO mass / density of LO

= 8.604 / 0.89
= 9.667 m3

V Storage Tank = LO Volume + 4% because of Construction

= 9.667 + 4%
= 10.054 m3

b. Calculation of LO Transfer Pump

Pump is planned to move of LO from storage tank to the system oil
tank for 2 hour. The pump should be protected by suction strainer
with mess size about 0.03 mm.

LO volume = 10.054 m3
Time = 2 hour

Q = LO Volume / time
= 5.027 m3/h
= 0.001 m3/s

Based on calculaton above, planned pump specification is :

Brand = Taiko Gear Pump
Type = NHG - 5
Capacity = 6 m3/h
Suction Pressure = -0.5 to 2 bar
Discharge Pressure = 6 bar
Temperature = 80 °C
Rotation = 1500 rpm
Frekuensi = 50 Hz
Power = 2.2 kW

2 LUBRICATING SEPARATING SYSTEM

a. Calculation of LO Separator
Lubricating must be cleaned in an efficient centrifugal separator.
Capacity of separator should be determined by number of though
flow of tank. The separators should preferably be of a type with
controlled discharge of the bowl to minimize the lubricating oil
losses. The capacity of the separator can be estimated by the
formula given by engine maker (Wartsila 32, page 74).

so, we can choose heater with specification :

a. Engine Driven (Force) Pump

Engine Driven (Force) Pump is the main pump in Lubricating oil
system. The function is pumping lubricating oil to main engine.
Capacity and pressure pump priming has been determined by
Wartsila.

Requirement Data based on Warsila 12V32

Pressure = 5 bar
Capacity = 120 m3/h
= 2000.0 l/min
b. Stand-by pump
Function of the stand by pump is to pump lubricating oil to main
engine if priming pump and main pump is failure. Capacity and
pressure pump priming has been determined by Wartsila.

The stand-by lubricating oil pump is normally of screw or gear type

and should be provided with an overflow valve.

Design data:
Capacity = 110 m3/h
= 1833.34 l/min
Design pressure, max = 8 bar
Design temperature, m = 100 C
Lubricating oil viscosity= SAE 40(500 cSt)

Based on calculaton above, planned pump specification is :

Brand = Hydroster
Type = ACF 125-3L
Capacity = 1999 l/min
= 119.94 m3/h
Delivery pressur = 6.3 bar

c. Priming Pump
Technical requirement data based on Wartsila 32
Capacity = 30.0-36.2 m3/h
Priming pressure= 0.5 bar

so, we can choose pump with specification :
