PROBLEM SOLVING Key Answer
1. The members of a cooking club are making cakes, which they will sell at a street fair for $9 apiece.
It cost $24 for a booth at the fair, and the ingredients for each cake cost $3. At some point, the
club members will sell enough cakes so that their sales cover their expenditures. How many cakes
will they have sold? How much will the sales and expenditures be?

2. A baseball coach takes his team out for pizza every time they win a game. Not everyone can come
each time, so he orders the pizzas based on how many players are coming. After last week's
victory, he bought 2 small pizzas and 1 large pizza, the perfect amount for the 9 players going out
for pizza. This week, there were 7 players going, so he ordered 1 small pizza and 1 large pizza,
which was also just the right amount. How many people does each size of pizza feed?

3. Garrett and his mom are planting vegetables in their garden. Garrett has finished planting 7 rows
of carrots so far and is planting new rows at a rate of 5 rows per hour. His mom has finished 9
rows of tomatoes and will continue planting at 3 rows per hour. Once the pair get to the point
where they have finished the same number of rows, they will take a break and decide what to
plant next. How long will that take? How many rows will they each have completed?

4. Raymond always takes the same route when he walks his dog. First, he walks 7 blocks to the park.
Then he walks 5 blocks to the elementary school. Finally, he walks 12 blocks to get back home.
Raymond walks his dog 5 times each day. How many blocks does Raymond's dog walk each day?

5. For his parents' anniversary party, Darell is considering using one of two venues. A hotel in
Springfield will cost $142 for a reservation, plus $20 per person. A restaurant in the same city will
cost $19 per person, in addition to $844 for the reservation. In order to make the best decision,
Darell figures out how many attendees it would take to have the venues cost the same amount.
What would the total cost be? How many attendees would that be?

6. Karen owns a cake shop and she is working on two wedding cakes this week. The first cake consists
of 1 small tier and 1 medium tier, which will serve a total of 76 guests. The second one includes 4
small tiers and 5 medium tiers, which is enough servings for 356 guests. How many guests does
each size of tier serve?

7. The gardening store sells clay flower pots, which hold 6 liters of dirt, and ceramic flower pots,
which hold 3 liters. Colton bought 4 flower pots, which will hold a total of 21 liters of dirt. How
many of each type of flower pot did he buy?

8. Josie has already baked 13 cakes, and she can bake 1 cake with each additional packs of butter
she buys. With 19 additional packs of butter, how many total cakes can Josie bake?
