HISTORIOGRAPHY OF ISLAM

TITLE: MAAHAD MUHAMMADI IN KELANTAN

Maahad Muhammadi name could not be separated again from the history of education and
dissemination of knowledge, especially in Kelantan and Nusantara general. It is a religious institution
using the Arabic leading and the oldest religious school in the state. It has produced thousands of,
scholars, statesmen, entrepreneurs, technocrats, writers and politicians are mature and prosper. 1 April
1937 is a day of hope for people Maahad Muhammadi due date is the date of the establishment of Maahad
Muhammadi. Maahad Muhammadi was established on Thursday 20 Muharram 1356 by overlook his
royal assent and Down Royal Highness Al-Sultan Ismail, son of the late Al-Al-Sultan Muhammad IV, Al-
Sultan and cater for the State Darulnaim.

In Kelantan, there are four Maahad Muhammadi that are the most known. The four of them are
Maahad Muhammadi Lil Banin (MML), Maahad Muhammadi Lil Banat (MMP), Maahad Muhammadi
Pasir Pekan (MMPP) and Maahad Muhammadi Tumpat. What is unique about all these school is the
history of the school also. It’s because Maahad Muhammadi in the beginning starts with only one
institution. But after that it is separated become to four institution of Islamic studies. We will refer one by
one of this history in the next paraghraph.

1.0 MAAHAD MUHAMMADI LIL BANIN (MML).

Maahad Muhammadi Lil Banin or also called as Maahad Muhammadi Lelaki (MML), is a
leading Arab religious secondary schools in Kelantan which is located in Pengkalan Chepa road, Kota
Bharu, Kelantan. The school is now under the auspices of the Foundation based Islam Kelantan (Yayasan
Islam Kelantan) in Nilam Puri. During this school was established, a lot of success and excellence
achieved by the citizens. As a result of the success and excellence that has made Maahad Muhammadi
Lelaki became more noted and well known at all levels, especially in terms of curriculum and co-
curriculum. Education multisystem or easily known by the term of two-pronged carried out on an
important mission to outcome the intellectual religious knowledge as well as academic knowledge that
enable students to succeed in the world and the hereafter. This school is the first school of Maahad
Muhammadi in Kelantan and then after that it is separated to Maahad Muhammadi Lil Banat or Maahad
Muhammadi Perempuan (MMP).

2.0 MAAHAD MUHAMMADI LIL BANAT (MMP)
Maahad Muhammadi was established on Thursday, April 1, 1937 equal to 20 Muharram 1356 by
overlook assent and said his Down Royal Highness Al-Sultan Ismail, son of the late Al-Al-Sultan
Muhammad IV, Al-Sultan and cater for the State of Kelantan Darulnaim.

Maahad Muhammadi, which is also the day before as:


1. Al-Madrasah Al-Muhammadiah Al-Arabiah (1937-1942)
2. Al-Madrasah Al-Arabiah Jame 'Al-Ismaili Merbau (1942-1956)
3. Al-Maahad Al-Muhammadi Al-Qismu Al-Arabi (1956-1973)
4. Al-Maahad Al-Muhammadi (1974-1982)
5. Al-Al-Muhammadi Maahad Lilbanin and Al-Al-Muhammadi Maahad Lilbanat (01/07/1982)

Maahad Muhammadi Perempuan (MMP) that is located in heart of downtown Kota Bharu in
Merbau Road is also name that simply noted and has been dominating the world. MMP is one of the
Islamic school that is organized under Foundation based Islam Kelantan (Yayasan Islam Kelantan). This
school practices the integrated education system which combines the measure of the Ministry of
Education and the measurement of Al-Azhar University, Egypt. Through this system, the learning process
implemented using three main medium of Malay, English and Arabic. Students are required to master all
three languages so as to avoid lagging behind in education. For students in levels four and five, they were
given a choice whether to pursue studies in science, accounting, commerce or economics.  All the four
streams are integrated into the subject of religion that must make their stay in the flow of Islamic studies.

3.0 MAAHAD MUHAMMADI PASIR PEKAN (MMPP)

Maahad Muhammadi (P) Pasir Pekan was established in 1938. This school was founded late Tuan
Haji Adam Haji Wan Abdullah Wan, a master teacher who is known at the time.
The early establishment of this school at the end of 1938 as the name of the Falahiah Madrasah Pasir
Pekan. Tuan Guru Haji Wan Adam as the principles. Several years later, the school was taken over by the
Islamic Council and the customs of the Kelantan Malays.

In 1974, Madrasah Falahiah administered by the Department of Religious Schools (service) until
1978, then changed its name to the Kelantan Islamic Foundation in 1979.
The school has been taken over by the Ministry of Malaysia in 1983. In 1984, students in this school was

moved to another building provided by the Ministry of Education is not far from the original building site
called SMKA Falahiah. In 1985, the building housed the original Islamic boys from the Men Maahad
Muhammadi form below and six above six because class is in Maahad Muhammadi Jalan Pengkalan
Chepa Men inadequate. However, both placed under the administration of one principal.

In 1989, the school was placed boys and girls in the name of Muhammadi Maahad Pasir Pekan to
1994. In 1995, male students integrated into the building Maahad Jalan Pengkalan Chepa Muhammadi
man while here are reserved for girls only, the name of the Pasir Pekan Maahad Muhammadi.

Nowadays, Maahad Muhammadi Pasir Pekan (MMPP) is one of the best religious school in
Kelantan. Although this school is only for girls, it also give a very good education for every student. It is
like similar by Maahad Muhammadi Perempuan (MMP), but it is different because this school only
provide the education in religious and economic term, not like MMP or MML that provide both of
religious and sciene.

4.0 MAAHAD MUHAMMADI TUMPAT (MMT)

Maahad Muhammadi Tumpat is one of the schools under the auspices of Yayasan Islam Kelantan
(YIK). Formation history began when SMU (A) Bustanul Arifin combined with chestnuts in the village of
Sekolah Menengah Ugama (Arab) Bahriah and placed in the Religious School Tumpat (SMAT) in
December 1984. Religious School Tumpat (SMAT) was officially opened on January 1, 1985.   Finally in
1999 the Chief Minister of Kelantan, Dato 'Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat opening a new three storey building
and the name changed to Maahad Muhammadi SMAT Tumpat (MMT).

Maahad Muhammadi Tumpat is located in Kampung Sedar, that is about 14 kilometre from Kota
Bharu and 3 kilometre from Tumpat. The vision of this school is to become an excellence school by 2015
and the mission of this scool is to provide an effective education to students through the religious and
academic approachment to produce an excellent generation.

5.0 SOME FIGURES OF MAAHAD MUHAMMADI

There are some figures from Maahad Muhammadi in Kelantan. Let’s see one by one some of
these figures.

5.1 Datuk Dusuki Hj. Ahmad 

Datuk Dusuki Hj. Ahmad is a Political Secretary to former of Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir
bin Mohamad. He was born in 1944. Study in Ma'ahad Muhammadi Kota Bharu, then in Malaya Islamic
University College and University of Al-Azhar Egypt.

Representatives of the People's Parliament became Tumpat 1982 to 1990, Parliamentary


Secretary Ministry of Land and Regional Development, Ministry Parliamentary Secretary
Malaysia.Kemudian, Islamic Da'wah Foundation Malaysia (YADIM) There are a Member of the World
Council of Mosques in 1980. Later, as director of Rabitah held in Kuala Lumpur. Then,in January
21,2000 he served as Political Secretary to the Prime Minister at that time.

5.2 Haji Ab. Rahaman Haji Hussain

Haji Ab. Rahaman Hussain is a leader in Development of Astronomy. He was born on 11


September 1945, in Kg. Field Pa'is Pasir Putih, Kelantan. Late has been married to Hajah Halijah binti
Mohd Nor and was awarded a total of 12 baby is made up of six daughters and six sons. 

He was trained since childhood with a strong religious environment through education of the
parents beat al-Muhammadi Mosque Kota Bharu. He continued his studies at Maahad Muhammadi until
the end of class 9 in 1966. His hard work in increasing knowledge brings success SPM and HSC as
private candidates.  He claimed knowledge of Astronomy from 1961 to 1980 began in the early stages of
study when the Maahad Muhammadi up into the working world. He has sought and received guidance
from some scholars and among the late astronomer Hj. Mohd. Saleh b. Hj. David, the late Dato
'Hj.Mohd. Nor b Hj. Abraham (the Mufti of Kelantan), the late Dato 'Hj. Ismail Yusof (Kelantan State
Mufti), the late Hj. Mohd. Khair Taib and Hj. Ab Rahman Hj. Salleh. 

Several positions during his service with the government began in 1967 as a lecturer in Arabic
Religious Secondary School (Sekolah Agama Rakyat) and the Maahad Muhammadi Kota Bharu, the
supervisor in the Office of Religious Negari Kelantan State Secretary, State Official Da'wah and last
position in the Department of Religious Affairs State as the Chief Assistant Director Da'wah state of
Kelantan in 1997 until his retirement on October 1, 2000. After his retirement continued to contribute

service to the community as independent missionaries and led Syar'ie Astronomy Association of Malaysia
at the end of its life. 

Contribution :
Ab. Rahaman Hussain is a prominent astronomer known especially in Kelantan because his name
is often displayed in calendars and diaries Kelantan state government agency that calculates prayer times
and taqwin Hijri. Besides the late often invited to deliver talks related to religion and astronomer.  He
served in leading Syar'i Astronomy Association of Malaysia (PFSM) as President for 14 years from
October 1992 until the end of its life, September 2006. He took over the leadership tampok PFSM after
Dr. Abdullah Ibrahim resigned as President of the first.Several courses and seminars held during his
leadership Astronomy for Astronomy in developing the knowledge society
He also presented several papers at the seminar organized by PFSM or government agency or non-
governmental organizations. Among the papers presented :

1. Astronomy Towards the New Millennium; in Kelantan Syariah Astronomy Seminar on 9 Rabi 1418H /
1997M July 14 at the Islamic Center of Kota Bharu, organized by the Department of Islamic Affairs and
the Association of Astronomy Syar'i Kelantan Malaysia.

2. Astronomy Terms Syar'i Time In The determination of Worship; in Astronomy Seminar pleaseth the
age of space exploration at 4-5 Jumada Al-Akhirah 1411 H / 22 to 23 December 1990, Islamic Center of
Kuala Lumpur, organized by the Islamic Affairs Department of the Prime Minister, the Association of
Astronomy pleaseth Malaysia and the Association of Al-Quran International Islamic University.

3. Astronomy Syariah in Malaysia: Reconciliation Between the Modern and traditional claims, the
Syariah Astronomy Seminar on 19 September 2005, at Conference Hall 1, Pusat Islam UiTM Shah Alam,
Selangor, organized by the Centre for Islamic Thought (citu), UiTM Shah Alam.

4. Taqwin According to Islamic justification '; the Seminar on Islamic eBooks Taqwin 13 to 14 August
2005 at Kompleks Taman Seni Islam organized by the Selangor Mufti Department.

5. The direction of interest in the life of the Muslim Qibla: at 19-20 Jumada Al-Akhirah 1427 H / 15 to 16

July 2006, at the Convention Centre Selangor International Islamic College, organized by the Selangor
Mufti Department and the Convention on International Islamic College.
6. Basic Settings Idul Adha From the angle of the Shariah, the 29 RabiulAkhir 1424 H / June 30-July 2,
2003, at Corus Paradise Resort, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, organized by the Department of Islamic
Development of Malaysia.

His efforts to develop astronomy in the community is one of struggle Syar'i Astronomy
Association of Malaysia. The late involvement in efforts to develop astronomy, can be seen through his
involvement in voluntary work among them;

1) President of the Association of State Syariah Astronomy (1998-2006)


2) Member of the Technical Committee of Islamic calendar, JAKIM (1991 - 2006)
3) Member of the Advisory Council of the National Planetarium (1999 - 2006)
4) Member of the establishment of Langkawi National Observatory (2003)

Kelantan;

(BSK)
Finally, Ab. Rahaman bin Hussein has returned to meet the Almighty on Tuesday 3rd Ramadhan
1427 AH / 26 September 2006 at 4:00 pm at the Hospital Machang, Kelantan. Late in his life is in
Kelantan because his voice is often in the air on the radio Kelantan and RTM TV1. The late departure is a
great loss to Malaysia Syar'i Astronomy Association and the struggle to expand knowledge of Astronomy
in Australia.
