THE POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS OFFICE HOW TO APPLY

The Postgraduate Scholarships Office deals with
applications for University of Leeds Postgraduate
Scholarships and Studentships, and provides information
about funding opportunities for students wishing to
undertake postgraduate degrees at the University.
The Office is open from Monday to Friday from 09.00
until 17.00 hours. If you have any queries relating to
scholarship funding, please email

The earlier the application is made the better, especially
if there is any likelihood of delay in getting a visa, making
the necessary financial arrangements or there is the need
to receive an Academic Technology Approval Scheme
(ATAS) Clearing Certificate. Further information on the

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
In addition to academic qualifications, applicants
whose first language is not English must provide formal
evidence that their English language ability is sufficient
for postgraduate study. The minimum English language
requirements for entry to programmes of study at the
University of Leeds are specified in various University
publications.

to help international students improve their English

University Research Scholarships are available for
students from the United Kingdom and other EU
countries who are commencing PhD study from October
2009. Applicants must hold at least a UK Upper Second
Class Honours Degree or equivalent.
Up to 18 University Research Scholarships will be
available and will cover academic fees at the UK rate and
(for full-time students) an annual maintenance grant of

Available to candidates wishing to undertake full-time
postgraduate research study in any Faculty for candidates
of British parents who have been domiciled in Yorkshire
for a period of not less than ten years.

Available to University of Leeds graduates wishing to
undertake full-time research in the School of Chemistry
or the School of Physics and Astronomy. One award

Available for study in the School of Design for candidates
undertaking research into the production of wool, silk
or other textile materials, or the manufacture of textile
fabrics. Preference will be given to candidates born in

Available for study in the Faculty of Arts for candidates
undertaking research in the School of English or the
Department of German.
LOWSON SCHOLARSHIP

Available to candidates wishing to undertake full-time
research in the School of Chemistry. Preference will
be given to those whose proposed research involves
analytical chemistry.

WHITE ROSE STUDENTSHIPS
The White Rose Studentships are collaborative awards
between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.
There are up to 12 awards available overall within the
three Universities linked to specific areas/projects. The
Scholarship holders will have supervisors at two of the
institutions. The awards will cover academic fees at the

two schemes for Mastership study:

RESEARCH COUNCIL (BBSRC)
The BBSRC offers support for the MSc in Chemical
Biology at the University of Leeds. Application enquiries

COUNCIL (EPSRC)
The EPSRC is responsible for funding research and
training in the areas of chemistry, physics, mathematics
and in the engineering sciences. EPSRC offers
postgraduate funding for advanced courses by means of
Masters’ Training Packages. Candidates should check
with individual Schools for closing dates.

The ESRC is the main provider of postgraduate awards in
the social sciences. Candidates who do not hold an ESRC
recognised Master’s Degree can apply to undertake an
integrated research-training Master’s Degree with a 3 year
PhD programme (holding a 4 year studentship).

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The University of Leeds has a long history of welcoming
and providing scholarships for international students.
Students wishing to come to Leeds are also encouraged
to investigate the opportunity of obtaining British
Chevening Scholarships, which are funded by the Foreign
and Commonwealth Office and administered by the
British Council. Further information is available from the

The scholarships are very competitive and it is important
to make enquiries and apply to all possible sources at
an early stage in your application for study. Students are
strongly advised to secure funding before they arrive in
the UK.
If funds cannot be raised, it is advisable to defer entry
until funds are secured. It is virtually impossible to raise
funds once in the UK.
FULL SCHOLARSHIPS
BEIT TRUST – FCO CHEVENING -
UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships currently provide six awards and are
open to students domiciled in Malawi, Zambia and
Zimbabwe to undertake a one-year taught Master’s
programme in any School of the University. They are
available for the majority of the one-year full-time
taught Masters’ programmes of study offered within
the University (but MBAs are infrequently considered).
Applicants must already hold a degree of equivalent
standard to a good UK upper second class honours
degree. The award covers maintenance and other
allowances, payment of tuition fees, and travel to and
from the UK.

COMMONWEALTH SHARED SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME
Up to seven scholarships are available to students from
developing Commonwealth countries to undertake a
one-year taught Master’s programme of study at the
University of Leeds in a subject related to the economic,
social or technological development of the student’s
home country. The scholarships, which are funded jointly
by the Department for International Development and
the University of Leeds, provide maintenance and other
allowances, payment of tuition fees and travel to and from
the UK.
Completed application forms should be returned to the
Postgraduate Scholarships Office. The closing date for
receipt of applications will be on 1 April 2009. Please
check the scholarships website for a list of participating
Schools.
KULIKA CHARITABLE TRUST – FCO CHEVENING
UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS SCHOLARSHIPS (UGANDA)
Up to three postgraduate Scholarships are available to
Ugandan nationals living in Uganda wishing to undertake
a one-year taught Master’s programme of study in the
areas of Engineering, Environment, Finance (not MBA),
Communications Studies, Development Studies and
Education.
Applicants must hold at least an upper second class
degree from a Ugandan institution or a degree of
equivalent standard to a UK upper second class honours
degree and should normally have 3 years’ relevant work
experience. Applicants should usually be under 36
years of age. The award covers maintenance and other
allowances, payment of tuition fees, travel to and from the
UK. The applications procedure is being handled by the
British Council in Uganda (Rwenzori Courts, Plot 2 & 4a
Nakasero Road, PO Box 7070, Kampala, Uganda) and
enquiries may be addressed to them.
Applications for September 2009 should be received by
the British Council in Kampala by 14 December 2008.

Up to two Shell Centenary Scholarships and up to
four Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarships are

Centre for Combustion and Energy Studies, Centre for
Computational Fluid Dynamics, Design, Geography,

POSTGRADUATE (LATIN AMERICA) SCHOLARSHIPS
Three full international fee scholarships are available
for candidates from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia,
Mexico, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela undertaking
taught postgraduate study or Masters by Research (1 year
full time) in a range of subjects.

scholarships and all eligible applicants will be

TETLEY & LUPTON SCHOLARSHIPS

Up to nine awards of between £4,000 and £5,200 will
be made available to international students who are
commencing taught postgraduate study in any Faculty
in session 2009-2010. These one-year awards are given
towards the cost of academic fees for candidates liable
to pay tuition fees at the ‘full-cost’ rate for international
students. Students should be aware that they will need to
raise funds for their maintenance and the remainder of
their academic fees. Applicants will be required to hold a
UK First Class Honours degree or equivalent. The closing
date for applications in the Postgraduate Scholarships
Office is 1 March 2009.

The Yorkshire Ladies' Council of Education has a
