3 ChE201 Fluid Dynamics

session 2017 Due Date: 08-March-2019
Solve all the questions. (As a part of assessment of CLO2)
Question 1
Water is filtered through a sand bed 150 mm thick. The depth of water on top of the bed is 120
mm. the porosity is 0.4 and the mean particle diameter is 0.25 mm. the dynamic viscosity is 0.89
cP and the density is 998 kg/m3. Calculate the flow rate per square metre of area?
Question 2
Bill gets a job delivering pizzas. The pizza company makes him mount a sign on the roof of his car. The
frontal area of the sign is A = 0.612 ft2, and he estimates the drag coefficient to be CD = 0.94 at nearly all
air speeds. Estimate how much additional money it costs. Bill per year in fuel to drive with the sign on his
roof compared to without the sign. Use the following additional information: He drives about 10,000
miles per year at an average speed of 45 mph. The overall car efficiency is 0.332, fuel = 50.2 lbm./ft3, and
the heating value of the fuel is 1.533x107 ft.lbf./lbm. The fuel costs $3.50 per gallon. Use standard air
properties.

Question 3
A cylindrical chimney 1 m in diameter and 25 m tall is exposed to a uniform 50 km/hr wind at standard
atmospheric conditions and at 15 C. End effects and gusts may be neglected. Estimate the bending
moment at the base of the chimney due to wind forces.

Question 4
A gas of density ρ = 1.25 Kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity µ = 1.5x10-5 Pa s flows steadily through a bed of
spherical particles of diameter dp = 0.005 m. The bed has a height of 3.00 m and voidage of 1/3. The
superficial velocity is 0.03 m/sec. Calculate the Reynolds number and the frictional pressure drop over the
bed.

Question 5
Solid particles having density 2500 kg/m3 are packed in a vessel of cross sectional area 0.04 m2. The solid
occupies 1 m depth in a vessel. The mass of solids in the bed is 50 kg and the surface to volume mean
diameter of the particles is 1 mm. A liquid of density 800 kg/m3 and viscosity 0.002 Pas flows upwards
through the bed.

Calculate the voidage (volume fraction occupied by voids) of the bed.

Calculate the pressure drop across the bed when the volume flow rate of liquid is 1.44 m 3/h

Question 6

0.2 m ID U-glass tube (figure given below) to a depth of 1m with 10000 spherical quartz ρ = 7800
Kg/m3 particles (dp = 1cm). What will be the water (ρ = 7800 Kg/m3, µ = 0.001 Kg/cm-s) flowrate
required through the bed if the water level is kept 2m above the top of the packed bed? The particles
are held between the two sieves.

Question 7

A Partial oxidation is carried out by passing air with 1.2 mol percent hydrocarbons through 0.5in ID
tube packed with 8ft of 1/8 x 1/8 cylindrical catalyst pellets. The air enters at 350°C and 2.0 atm
with superficial velocity of 3 ft/s. Calculate the pressure drop because of friction. (Assume ɛ = 0.4, µ
= 16 x 10-5 gm-cm/s)
