CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. BACKGROUND
An internship is a planned and closely supervised “hands-on” learning experience
providing the student with a wide range of actual work activities and opportunities to shadow
or observe portions of operations or administration for which actual work experience is not
practical or possible.

1.2. PURPOSE
Internship purposed as a media for students to implement the theories learned in
university to real workplace with their own style. Most important, the internship is managed
to educate student through working experiences which student never felt during their
university life.

1.3. EXPECTATIONS
The internship program was one of the strength owned by the President University and it
was one of consideration why students choose President University rather than other
universities. I was one of those many students. I hope that internship program is really giving
me real working experience and I am expecting to learn useful lesson during my internship.
So, someday it will useful though I am not working anymore in the company where I had my
internship.

1.4. OBJECTIVES
 The internship program was set with following objectives to ensure the goal is fulfilled:
 Experience the importance and relevance of ideas learned in classroom work
 Develop their abilities to achieves performance goals based in the responsibilities and
duties
 Get a bird’s eye view of how a company is running and interact with and learn from
industry professionals
 Experience working within a group or a team

 Enable the cooperating organization to receive the benefits of the special talents and
background of the students.
 Increase interaction between the university and the cooperating organization to educate
and produce good quality graduates.
 Apply, in an appropriate and professional work setting, theories, concepts and
philosophies learned through previous academic and other academic.
 Develop decision-making and problem-solving skills through the formulation,
implementation and evaluation of alternative solutions to problems and approaches to
issues.
 Gain an understanding of the overall company organizational structure and their
management philosophy (or corporate culture) and clientele base, as well as their relative
position to other local, national and/or global competition in the market place.
 Identify and address personal strengths and weaknesses in light of demands and
expectations of employment in various roles and responsibilities assigned in a work
setting
 Develop network of industry professionals that can be used when seeking full-time
employment.
 Share their internship experience and special project with the other PU interns, faculty
and staff.

1.5. BENEFITS
1.5.1. For Employers:
 Allow the company to better serve its customers through the contributions of an intern.
Much organization during harder economic times lack of sufficient qualified employees.
Through the organizations are not obliged to provide salary and other benefits, interns
can serve as a low-cost, short-term solution to handle increased workloads and complete
needed projects, while at the same time providing the intern with a valuable work
experience;
 Stimulate and promote a learning experience among professional staff. Company
employees can learn much from interns who bring a different set of skills, knowledge
base, and perspective to the job

 Provide company personnel with the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of their in
house training programs or other services based on feedback from interns;
 Afford opportunity to screen for perspective employees. Interns become familiar with an
organization’s culture and work, and establish close working relationship with current
employees. This makes them ideal candidates for job vacancies. Even if an intern does
not end up being employed at their internship placement site, a positive work term
experience often provides the organization with valuable word-of-mouth advertising for
university.
 Allow company to contribute to professional development of future professionals through
partnership with President University.
 Provide a good recruitment tool for a company to observe potential workers under actual
working conditions without a long term commitment.
 Provide short-term staffing to aid in completing certain projects;
 Give awareness of current curriculum and the opportunity to evaluate if the university’s
objectives are meeting business needs;
 Help in the company’s social contribution to prepare and train the next generation;
 Gain enthusiastic and motivated workers and develop supervisory skills staff
 Develop a pool of potential full time employees
 Build relationship between University and the company’s recruitment department; and
 Free of lower financial investment for students interns than permanent employees

1.5.2. For Students:


 Gaining real-world, practical work experience
 Networking with industry professionals that may assist with their permanent employment
endeavors
 Developing professionals skills, including interpersonal skills, teamwork, and time
management
 Earning college credit while meeting University graduation requirements
