Basic Principle

Store items near the place where they

will be used most often
Mostly 70-75% women spend their time
in kitchen in a day.
Reasons
• Organizing a kitchen efficiently…

1. Saves time and energy

2. Reduces steps needed to carry out tasks
3. Safe organization of appliances and work areas

Work Triangle
• An arrangement in which the three work centers form points
of an imaginary triangle.

*Efficient work flow –

sides of the triangle
should total between
12-23 feet
Other Work Centers
• Mixing center
Used for preparing and mixing food

• Planning center
Used for planning & chopping
TYPES OF LAYOUT
U-Shaped Kitchen
Best of the kitchen plans and most popular.
Three work centres on three adjacent walls.
Provide a great deal of continuous counter space for work.
L-shaped Kitchen:
Also be regarded as a good type.
Two walls empty or free corner can be utilized for keeping built-in
storage or dining area.
Three work centres right to left are placed on adjacent walls.
 Corridor Kitchen or Two Wall Kitchen:
It resembles the strip kitchen.
workable kitchen.
Its disadvantage is that it often acts as a passage and traffic
interferes while meal preparation.
Straight Line Plan
• Work centers are on one wall.

Advantage – Good plan where

space is limited.
Efficient for one person.

Disadvantage – Tend to be small,

with limited storage
and counter space.
Island Shaped Kitchen:
It needs a fairly large room.
It could be used as cooking range or food preparation area.
It reduces the amount of walking.
Peninsula Plan
• Extension of a countertop.

Advantage – Makes use of

wasted space.
Disadvantage – Requires a
larger more
spacious area.
A peninsula is basically a
connected island, converting an
L-shaped kitchen layout into a
horseshoe or U-shape.

In many kitchens that have this

layout, the peninsula serves as
a room divider that separates
the kitchen from a dining or
living room area, as seen in this
design
