PROGRAMMING
I. BACKGROUND
Plate Number: MIDTERMS-01
Plate Title: “SPORTS COMPLEX AND ATHLETHE’S
VILLAGE”
The project:
The Proposed project is a world-class Sports Complex with an Athletes
Village designed to cater to international sports spectre such as FIBA ,Asian
Games, World Cups and even Olympic Games. There will be three buildings
to serve as venue for the sporting events: an Athletic Stadium, Aquatic Center
for water sports, A multi-functional Gymnasium and a planned unit
development of the Athletes Village. Along with three primary building
sought to be constructed are support facilities and buildings that may be
introduced to further improve the function of th whole project development.
II. OBJECTIVES
DESIGN OBJECTIVES
ARCHITECTURAL OBJECTIVES
ORIENTATION
Proper location of every space and structure according to its function, base from the sun path and
wind flow to have an efficient design strategy
VENTILATION
The prevailing winds affect the thermal condition on the structure, proper location of openings
and open area for thermal comfort of the structures
LIGHTING
Ambiance, brightness and mood are the effects of the sunlight on the structure, openings and
proper location of window for direct sunlight to easily access through the structure.
ACCESSIBILITY
Entrance and exit point road networks, providing a circular path for definite vehicular and
pedestrian circulation within the site to avoid traffic and improvisation of ramps and alike
inconsideration for handicapped users.
ANTHROPOMETRIC
Every space, facility and furniture is based on the comfortability of the users.
AESTHETICS
Contemporary design that would best fit for the sports complex.
ENVIRONMENT
Landscapes that controls the mood of the site inconsideration of its surrounding.
PLANNING CONCEPT
Incorporating radial design planning in the sports complex to maximize the space and properly
orient the buildings in the site.
In consideration of the natural lighting and ventilation, radial planning would best suit in
achieving the passive cooling within the site
STRUCTURAL CONCEPT
A three-dimensional steel building frame which is stable against wind and quake loads.
Three-dimensional truss is based on the rigidity of the triangle and composed of linear elements
subjected only to compression or tension. Its simplest spatial unit is tetrahedron having four
joints and six members. A space frame forms, a very strong, thick, flexible structural fabric that
can be used horizontally or bend to a variety of shapes. The beauty of its open lattice work web
of lightweight tubular diagonals is only superpassed by its structural purity
III. DESIGN BRIEF
1. Stadium
- “Agila”
- The sun with 8 rays
- The Philippines National Animal and the inspiration of the retractable roof of the
stadium.
- The stadium’s retractable roof when opened resembles a single strand of the agila’s
feather. (see sketch attachment)
- And when closed, it resembles the national flag’s sun and its 8 rays.
-
2. Aquatics
- “Barong”
- The Water element/waves
- The Aquatic Center's design will consist of a roof similar to the waves of the
seas. The roofing will be made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a fiberglass
material used for its lightweight property, durability, and weather resistance.
- We intend to cover the facility but still let natural light into its interior. The roof
design resembles waves and also represent the flowing character of the water
element. A relatable concept for an aquatic center.
- We intended the facade to resemble the pattern of the “Barong Tagalog” , an
embroidered formal shirt and considered the national dress of the Philippines. And
that it really symbolizes the rich culture of the Philippines.
-
3. Gymnasium
- “parol”
- A parol is an ornamental, star-shaped Christmas lantern from the Philippines.
- It is traditionally made out of bamboo and paper and comes in various sizes and
shapes, which symbolizes the ethnicity and diversity of athletes from the different
parts of asia,and the worls.
- But generally the basic star pattern remains dominant. The design of the parol evokes
the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Kings to the manger
***The main color of the Stadium is yellow, the Aquatics Center with blue , and
the Gymnasium with its red. Together they symbolizes the Philippine flag’s colors
and the Architectural Character showcasing the Filipino ingenuity towards sports,
culture and international relations.***
4. THE ATHLETES VILLAGE
- Accommodation spaces for athletes and officials participating in competitions, conference venue
- 700 Accommodating and PW- Friendly rooms
- We also placed parks around the village and the whole site itself , where our athletes would go to
relax and unwind, also to jog and maybe train.
