The Risk of Climate Change and Global Warming

This article was written about the coral reefs in Australia by a news reporter- staff news editor at “Global

Warming Focus” which I would assume is probably a magazine or a website. What the claims is that the effect of

climate change in our earth has caused certain coral reefs to die off completely. The point of this article is to show

people that global warming is a real thing and that we need to recognize and understand what climate change and

global warming does to the planet. There was a record-breaking heatwave in the great barrier’s in 2016. Coral Reefs

started to die instantly. Even though the climate might overall change just a few degrees, it effects the world and the

ocean and ocean life more than we know. Everything in our earth is a ripple effect, and the slightest change of

anything can throw off our whole ecosystem and cause certain species to die off. Also, with climate change and

global warming, it causes natural disasters.

This article states that there has been record breaking rainfall with rising temperatures afterward. Our

amount of rainfall and temperatures since the 1990s, even to the early 21 st century has increased rapidly due to

climate change and global warming. Due to this rainfall, it has put humans in a bit of a pickle. It has caused

agricultural loss, and even flooding. It is well known that greenhouse gases have a contribution in this. Basically

what a greenhouse gases is “a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation, carbon

dioxide, and chlorofluorocarbons” (google). This increase has happened in the last three years. The rainfall is due to

warm air. The bad thing about greenhouse gases is that it literally warms up the Earth’s atmosphere. The greenhouse

gases is not the point of this article, but to point out the disadvantages of Earth’s atmosphere warming up and what it

does to the amount of rainfall the earth is producing and how it effects humans in a negative way.

So the big question is did humans cause global warming and climate change? In this text, the authors took

side that humans did cause global warming. But how? For one, the earth has warmed up rapidly at a very fast rate in

the past 200 years. It was predicted thousand years ago that this would happen. It’s just inevitable with the way us

humans live now and the amount of carbon dioxide that is being put out into the earth’s atmosphere. One thing we

can really focus on in this article is the fact that the Earth’s ice is melting. Our Polar ice caps are literally

disappearing. And it is happening at an alarming rate. The ice caps have been solid for MILLIONS of years, and

now it is breaking up so fast that by the next ten years, half of our earth’s ice could be gone. This is causing species

to die out due to not having enough food to eat. The species that rely on the Earth’s cool temperatures and ice are

polar bears, seals, etc. Not only Ice melting, but sea levels are also rising.
Rachman, Gideon. "There may be Winners as Well as Losers." Current History, vol. 106, no.

703, 11, 2007, pp. 386-387. ProQuest,

https://login.proxy039.nclive.org/login?url=https://search.proquest.com/docview/200718228?acc

ountid=10163.

In this article, Rachman talks about how Global warming is ironically good for some parts of the world. “A

planetary emergency that affected everyone equally would be much easier to tackle. However, climate change that

hurts some places but helps others opens the way for dangerous new conflicts” (Rachman). I've never heard that

global warming is good for some parts of the world, and it’s actually shocking because I've only heard the negative

of global warming. Rachman says that yes, global warming does cause diseases and floods, and that Asia and some

parts of Africa would be more affected than others but is a positive thing for Russia and Siberia. For Russia, it

makes winters more bearable. And or Siberia, more minerals are available, and areas are becoming available for

housing and settlement. Basically the main idea of this article is to explain that yes, global warming is horrible, but it

also benefits some parts of the world.

Stevenson, Kathryn T., et al. "Overcoming Skepticism with Education: Interacting

Influences of Worldview and Climate Change Knowledge on Perceived Climate Change Risk

among Adolescents." Climatic Change, vol. 126, no. 3-4, 2014, pp. 293-304. ProQuest,

countid=10163, doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10584-014-1228-7.

This article explains the misconceptions that adolescents have on global warming. We identify global

warming with their being holes in the ozone layer, and that leads us to believe fallacious conclusions on the risks of

global warming. The article also explains that studies suggest the perception of risks on adults has somewhat been

altered because we are only taught the dangers of climate change and global warming other than being completely

educated on it. This article shows data and theories on what groups of people are more educated in global warming

than others. People from different geological places are educated in different ways on global warming. The author is
trying to explain that adolescent brains are still developing so where we live and what our ethnicity is and many

other contributions how to do with how educated on the topic we actually are. The author also says that some

adolescents did not even know that global warming was even going on.

Krosnick, Jon A., et al. "The Origins and Consequences of Democratic Citizens' Policy

Agendas: A Study of Popular Concern about Global Warming." Climatic Change, vol. 77, no. 1-

ountid=10163, doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10584-006-9068-8.

This article explains the discussion of global warming in America. National surveys were conducted, and it

is said that Global Warming is actually on the lower side of the list of things that America is worried about. Public

perceptions of global warming is was molds the citizens on how they think of the issue. “The ACE model posits

that attitudes toward global warming are a function of people’s evaluations of its perceived consequences

(Anderson, 1981; Fishbein and Ajzen, 1975). The most negative attitudes toward global warming are likely to be

held by people who believe that it will have a large number of very damaging consequences. Represented more

formally, attitudes toward global warming are thought to be derived from beliefs” (Krosnick). I have never though

of global warming to have been something that we believed because of our attitudes or what we have been taught.

It’s interesting to learn that some places and people do not think it is an issue.

"Global Warming and Climate Change; New Global Warming and Climate Change Study Results

Reported from Lanzhou University (Management of Drought Risk Under Global

Warming)." Global Warming Focus, Jul 25, 2016, pp. 136. ProQuest,

“Drought is a serious ecological problem around the world, and it’s impact on crops and water availability for

humans can jeopardize human life. Although a drought has always been common, the drought risk has become

increasingly prominent because of the climate warming and that has occurred during the past century” (Lanzhou

University). This article is intended to be about the country china, but the risks of drought is all over the world. Our

rainfall is increasing rapidly, and it is causing risks to humans. We do not think that this is a huge deal, because the

majority are not educated in why and how drought can harm human life. One example is that we could lose food

supply and starve and die because of that fact that it is so dry that our plants die off. How does global warming

correlate to drought, though? Simply because it is becoming to warm that it is dry and there is no rainfall

"Greenhouse Gases; Studies from University of Hawaii Yield New Information about Greenhouse Gases

(Broad Threat to Humanity from Cumulative Climate Hazards Intensified by Greenhouse Gas

Emissions)." Global Warming Focus, Jan 07, 2019, pp. 249. ProQuest,

This article explains the threat that greenhouse gases has on human life. Greenhouse gases are making

changes in the Earth that is harmful to humanity. "We found traceable evidence for 467 pathways by which

human health, water, food, economy, infrastructure and security have been recently impacted by climate

hazards such as warming, heatwaves, precipitation, drought, floods, fires, storms, sea-level rise and changes

in natural land cover and ocean chemistry” (University of Hawaii). This alone is horrible. People don’t realize

the real-life risks of global warming and climate change and what it can do to our species. If we do not

decrease our use of CO2 and try to make the earth a better and healthier place, we will literally kill off our

species. And it will be no one’s fault but the human species because they have the ability to fix things, but we

won’t because we think that these are not real-life issues and that no one will be affected by climate control

and global warming when in reality everyone is getting affected by it.
