LECTURE-12
(CONTEMPORARY INTERIOR DESIGN)
ZAHA HADID

LEARNING OUTCOME :
To make you understand the ideas , the design concepts and the ideology of
Zaha Hadid and to remold their ideas into your ideas.
LSAD BIOGRAPHY...... https://www.businessdestinations.com/bd-portrait/the-life-and-work-of-zaha-hadid/

 Born in Baghdad on October 31, 1950 and trained in

London, legendary architect Zaha Hadid made an indelible
mark on 21st-century architecture.

 She studied mathematics at the

American University of Beirut (Lebanon) in 1968.

 In 1972 she moved to London (UK), to join the

Association of Architecture where she graduated
with honours in 1977 and served as a teacher soon
after.

LSAD BIOGRAPHY......

 After her first building was commissioned and built in 1994, the Vitra Fire Station in Germany, her
career took a leap forward.
 Following the Postmodern architectural boom led by Frank Gehry, Hadid was one of a group of innovative
architects who followed DECONSTRUCTIVISM style.
 As a rare female in a male-dominated industry, and the first woman to win the prestigious Pritzker
Architecture Prize in 2004.

LSAD BIOGRAPHY......

Her style is Deconstructivism (breaking architecture, displacement and distortion,

leaving the vertical and the horizontal, using rotations on small, sharp angles, breaks
up structures apparent chaos)

Using large volumes, sharp, angular forms, the play of light and the integration
of the buildings into the architectural designs using spiral forms.

She is an architect known worldwide for her talent in various disciplines such as
painting, graphic arts, 3d models and computer design.

Her untimely passing in 2016 left unfinished

projects, many of which are now being brought to
completion by Zaha Hadid Architects, the firm
she began in 1980.

The scope and breadth of this creativity has left

a lasting legacy that continues to influence
creatives in all fields.
LSAD MAXXI, ROME......ITALY (1998-2010)

MAXXI stands for ‘Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo’
(National Museum of 21st Century Art).

The museum will become the joint home of the MAXXI Arts and MAXXI Architecture
and Italy’s first national museum solely dedicated to contemporary arts.

Zaha Hadid architects, out of 273 candidates, won the architectural competition to
design the building in 1998.

CONCEPT:
 "gravity-defying"
 "fragmentary"
 "revolutionary"
LSAD MAXXI, ROME......
The building is a composition of bending oblong ( a rectangular or flat figure with unequal
adjacent sides) tubes, overlapping, intersecting & piling over each other, resembling a
piece of massive infrastructure.
It acts as a tie between the geometrical elements already present.
It is built on the site of Old Army Barracks, the centre is made up of spaces that flow
freely and unexpectedly between interior and exterior, where walls twist to become
floors or ceilings.

The outdoor courtyard surrounding the museum provides a venue for large-scale works of art.
LSAD MAXXI, ROME......

Zaha Hadid stated:

It's no longer just a

museum, but an
urban cultural centre where
a dense texture of interior
and exterior spaces have
been intertwined and
superimposed over one
another.

It's an intriguing mixture of

galleries, irrigating a large
urban field with linear display
surfaces".
LSAD ARCHITECTURE of MAXXI, ROME......
Two principle architectural elements characterize the project:

i. the concrete walls that define the exhibition galleries and determine the
interweaving of volumes;
ii. and the transparent roof that modulates natural light.

The roofing system complies with the highest standards required for museums and is
composed of integrated frames and louvers with devices for filtering
sunlight, artificial light and environmental control.
LSAD MAXXI, ROME......galleries, walkway and materials

Located around a large full height space gives access to the galleries dedicated to permanent collections
and temporary exhibitions.

Materials such as glass (roof), steel (stairs) and cement (walls) give the exhibition spaces a neutral
appearance.
LSAD MAXXI, ROME...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kv3feYibIUk

The fluid and sinuous shapes, the variety and interweaving of spaces and the modulated use of
natural light lead to a spatial and functional framework of great complexity, offering constantly
changing and unexpected views from within the building and outdoor spaces.
LSAD VITRA FIRE STATION......

Built in a small German town on the borders of Switzerland and France, the Vitra
Fire Station was Hadid’s first opportunity to bring her abstract drawings and
paintings to life in a physical form.

The sharp, angular concrete planes of the building are a glimpse of Zaha Hadid’s
architecture, with the project garnering her international acclaim.
LSAD PHAENO SCIENCE CENTER, WOLFSBURG, GERMANY (2005)

As the biggest investment the city had ever made,

Wolfsburg’s new science center had a lot of riding on it.

Hadid delivered with a stunning building that marries

contemporary materials and forms into a classic building.

The glass cutouts and ceiling latticework are recurring

themes throughout Zaha Hadid’s buildings, with the
concrete pillars creating “undulating artificial hills and
valleys.”
LSAD OLYMPICS AQUATICS CENTRE, LONDON, ENGLAND (2005–2011)

For the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Hadid was charged with creating one of

the major centers for the event.

The resulting Aquatics Centre is a

masterpiece with an undulating roof that
rises up like a wave.

She looked to the forms of water in

motion, making the natural shape with
exposed concrete finishes.

This centre remains one of the highlights

of Olympic Park.
LSAD SHEIKH ZAYED BRIDGE, ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (2007-10)

The undulating bridge, which connects Abu

Dhabi island to the southern Gulf shore, was
inspired by the forms of sand dunes, once
again showing how Hadid’s architecture takes
inspiration from nature.

The two-way four-lane highway bridge is a

stunning look at how Hadid’s curving forms
translate to functional architecture.

It is said to be one of the most complex

bridges ever constructed.
LSAD Characteristics of Zaha Hadid Architecture

ZAHA is known as the “queen of curves,”

Zaha Hadid’s architecture isn’t easily grouped with one particular architectural
style.

She is well-known for her use of geometric shapes to create dynamic, fluid
structures.

Certainly, much of her influence stems from her love of abstract painting and
drawing.

It’s well-documented that she was particularly fond of avant-garde Russian

painters such as Kazimir Malevich.

LSAD CONCLUSION….

Her works has revealed that Zaha Hadid is an

independent and energetic person who has authentic
works and brave enough to speak up about her own taste.

As a woman, her design metaphors has represent the spirit

of “sharp-energetic-feminine” figure in architecture.
LSAD WHAT WE LEARNED TODAY…..?
