Custom "k" Calculator

The Custom "k" Calculator was developed by the Applications Engineering Department of Garlock Sealing Technologies
(GST) to assist customers in determining the available compressive stress, the torque at which the stress is developed
and how those values compare to GST minimum and maximum recommended seating stresses when using bolts with
different "k" factors due to coatings. If you are using a standard steel bolt with a oil / graphite or other standard
thread lubricant, Garlock recommends using the Gasket Calculator 5.0 (table 1 shows the "k" factors used for standard
lubricants). If you are using coated bolts (such as PTFE), we strongly recommend obtaining the "k" factor from the bolt
manufacturer to optimize the performance of the gasketed joint, and prevent equipment damage.

What is the "k" factor?

The "k" factor is not the coefficient of friction. The"k" factor is a unitless number that takes into consideration all
elements that affect the amount of load applied by a fastener when torqued. Generally this number is obtained
through experiementation, is directly impacted by material hardness, surface finish, coatings, etc., and varies from one
bolt size to another.

The information found in these spread sheets should not be the sole factor for the gasket selection process. If at anytime you have any questions regarding the

To begin using the spread sheets fill in the "k" factor at the top of the page, choose the correct tab at the bottom of the workbook and fill in the light red colored cells
with the information requested. The results will be displayed in the white colored cells.

NOTE: The calculations are based on the contact dimensions. For example, if your system uses a full face gasket in non-ANSI/ASME raised face flanges, the
appropriate sheet would be "Ring Gaskets" since the contact dimensions are not changed. The dimensions that should be used are the I.D. of the gasket and the O.D.
of the raised face portion of the flange.

All torque and stress calculations are based on UNC bolts, and do not take flange stress into consideration. The user is responsible for using the identifying and
using the appropriate bolt stress for the assembly bolts and flange design.

With the "Full Face Gasket" and "Rectangular & Square Flange" sheets the red cells to the right of the white cells should read "TRUE" after all of the information is
entered.

Calculated compressive stress values can be compared with GST's recommended values by referring to Table 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3 located below the calculations. To print
the results simply click on the printer icon. The print areas have been preset.
