Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

Prepared by Katrina Marie V. Jucaban

Learning Competency: Students solve problems involving linear equations.

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students must have:
a. differentiated mixture-related problems and solution-related problems;
b. represented the unknowns and what are being asked;
c. interpreted solution-related problems into equations; and
d. solved solution-related problems.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Mixture-related Problems

Checking of Assignment
Review the assignment
Example #1: A Blue Lemonade is 10% lemon concentrate and 20% blue raspberry flavour. How many
grams of water must be added to 200g blue lemonade with a 30% flavor solution to reduce it to a
20% solution?
Given: 30% flavor of 200g lemonade
R: x – amount of water
y – result
grams of solution Percent of flavor Amount needed
200 g 30% 30(200)
X 0% 0x
Y 20% 20y
E: 200 + x = y
30(200) + 0x = 20y

6000 = 20y 200 + x = y

y = 300 g 200 + x = 300
x = 100 g
FA: 100g of water must be added.

Application:
Ask one volunteer to help mix the Blue Lemonade solution
- Compute for the 10% lemon concentrate (200 x 10% = 20g)
- Compute for the 20% blue raspberry flavour (200 X 20% = 40g)
- Pour 10% (20g) of lemon concentrate into the cup
- Pour 20% (40g) of blue raspberry flavour into the cup
- Pour 140 g of water to have a 200g lemonade
Go back to the problem and what is asked (x)
- Add 100g of water to the solution
Ask the class if they got 300 g solution. Is 60g of flavour 20% of 300g?

Practice: Exercise 5.1.8 #5

With a partner, have the class answer Exercise 5.1.8 number 5 on a ½ crosswise. Only one paper may be
used for each pair.
After answering, the class will exchange papers with a pair not beside them. Have a volunteer show
his/her solution on the board.

Discussion: From the examples presented, ask students what they think is a mixture-related problem.
- Mixture related problems involve creating a mixture from two or more things and
determining some quantity of the resulting mixture.
Ask students where else they can encounter mixture problems.
There are four common types of mixture in verbal problems of Algebra.
Solutions Assortments/Mixture
Solution is a homogeneous mixture Assorted mixture is a combination of
formed by dissolving a substance (solute) distinct items which can be resorted
in another substance (solvent). A easily back to its original components.
common example is the salt as solute Example is assorted candies in a pack.
and water as solvent forming into one
phase called brine or saline water.

Assessment: Exercise 5.1.8 # 4

Agreement: Practice answering Exercise 5.1.8 #1 and read page 119 (Investment-related problems)
