Tanghaligue Elementary School

Action Research
School Year 2013-2014

Title of Research:

The effectiveness of the Sustained Silent Reading Program on

Developing Reading Comprehension Skills of Grades I-VI Pupils in
Tanghaligue Elementary School, Talibon I District.

I. Situation:

Reading (decoding sounds and meaning) skill is one of the most

important skill a child must learn. It is the portal towards learning in all subject
areas offered. If a child doesn’t have these skills he/she is just a man watching
a show without knowing what has been shown. Competence in other subjects
may be attributed in a large measure to proficiency in reading. (Situation
based existing data)

II. Statement of the Research Problem:

General Objective: ..(purpose of the action research)

The present action research aims to document the implementation of the
Sustained Silent Reading Program and its contribution to the development
of the reading comprehension skills of Grades 1-6 pupils.

Specific Question (Based on the general objectives)

1. What is the baseline profile of the grades 1-6 pupil in the following
criterion variables:
- Phil-IRI
- Oral Reading verification Test
- Grades 3 & 6 NAT/RAT results, 2013
- Grades in English and Filipino
2. What resources and strategies required to implement effectively the
SSRPs?
- Reading materials that meet set criteria for grade level
- Time/schedule
3. Did the pupil improve their profile in the same criterion variables after
the SSRP intervention?

III. Generation Alternative Solutions

1. Conduct SSRP regularly.(put details of Question no. 2)
2. School Head will monitor the Conduct of SSR.
3. Teachers must provide reading materials in the classroom for
the pupils to real SSRP time.

IV. Plan of Action

A. Objective
Improve reading comprehension skills of pupils through SSRP.
B. Time Frame
Year-Round during school days at 1:00 – 1:30 pm(put time
frame…in details/specific)
C. Target Subjects:

All pupils enrolled in Grades I-VI SY 2013-2014 in Tanghaligue Elementary

School.

E. Evaluation Criteria

intervention data in the following criterion variables:
- Phil-IRI
- Oral Reading verification Test
- Grades 3 & 6 NAT/RAT results, 2013 and 2014 NAT
- Grades in English

F. Research Design

Descriptive action research (descried details of implementing

SSRP)

V. Presentation and Interpretation of RESULTS

Section A – Comparative results of the Phil-IRI data

Section B – Comparative results of NAT/RAT
Section C – Interpretations

VI. Conclusions and Recommendations

Based on the data/findings on the experimental type of research it is

found out that the pupils who undergo SSRP have high percentage of
independent comprehension level while pupils without SSRP attained low
percentage of independent comprehension level.

In this regard, it is recommended that:

(1) SSRP shall be sustained and closely monitored by the School
Head.
(2) Teachers shall conduct SSRP regularly and religiously.
(3) All pupils shall attend SSRP regularly.
(4) Parent shall follow up their children in their SSRP activities.

VII. Reflections

The researcher realized the significance in conducting SSRP in

order to improve the reading comprehension of the learners.
