< Rapidly changing business conditions and objectives demand business agility. When a
new business requirement arrives, IT must respond by extending existing applications,
building new custom applications, or licensing and implementing new packaged appli-

The Sun Java™ Composite Application Platform
Suite (CAPS), part of the Sun Java Enterprise
System, targets this need for a lower TCO by
bringing to market one of the most compre-
hensive and productive composite application
integration platforms available. Users of the
suite can deliver immediate business value
through the construction of composite appli-
cations that reuse existing IT application assets
in combination with newly created function-
ality. A key strength of Java CAPS is the use of a
common development, deployment, manage-
ment, and monitoring environment across all
integration components within the suite,
compared to separate point solutions for each
integration component. Based on customer
research, the Butler Group estimates up to 58
percent TCO savings by using the Java CAPS,
versus traditional methods of business process
integration and application development
(“Developing Composite Applications,
Comparing the Total Cost of Ownership,”
Butler Group, November 2005).
Java Composite Application Platform Suite
Java CAPS contains everything an enterprise
needs to develop, deploy, manage, and monitor
an SOA platform. It combines the functionality
of existing legacy and packaged applications,
as well as recently developed, reusable services,
in an intuitive composite application inte-
gration infrastructure. Business logic may
be extracted from these often-rigid applica-
tions, and securely accessed and modified by
respective business owners.
The suite is comprised of a combination of
composite application integration products
layered on top of infrastructure products. All
are supported by a proven set of end-to-end
graphical tools that deliver optimized source
code for standards-based collaboration and
business process execution. Developers may
operate on the graphical model or directly on
the source code which is synchronized with
the graphical model. Additionally, developers
may roundtrip with external Integrated
Development Environments (IDEs).
Customers interested in a subset of the full Java
CAPS integration and infrastructure functionality
may purchase any of following four suites:
• Sun Java B2B Suite (Business-to-Business):
A subset of Java CAPS targeting customers
who need the ability to efficiently manage
the diverse business-to-business requirements
across their supply chains, distribution
networks and clearinghouses.
• Sun Java ESB Suite (Enterprise Service Bus):
A subset of Java CAPS targeting customers
who need to simplify complex and costly

• Sun Java Application Platform Suite:
A subset of Java CAPS, the Sun Java
Application Platform Suite addresses the
challenges of manageability, performance,
security, and availability of business critical
applications and processes. It enables
process-driven portals delivering role-based
composite applications, providing authorized
information through a single user experience.
• Sun Java Web Infrastructure Suite: A subset
of Java CAPS, the Web Infrastructure Suite
improves web security, strengthens online
customer and partner relationships, and
reduces Web operations costs. This suite
is comprised of market leading Web and
identity infrastructure products.
Integration capabilities include application-to-
application integration using industry-leading
messaging, and transformation based on Java
and Extensible Stylesheet Language Transfor-
mations (XSLT) technology, as well as a broad
and deep array of connectors. Business Process
Management (BPM) automates multistep
business processes involving multiple back-end
systems and human activities. Business Activity
Monitoring (BAM) enables development of
sophisticated dashboards and alerting. Extract,
Transform, and Load (ETL) capabilities are
employed for moving bulk data.
Also included are extensive B2B support and
an advanced facility for enabling the develop-
ment of a single master index for common
entities such as customer, patient, or supplier.

Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE™) compliant
and Web services-based, distributed integration
platform that serves as the foundation of Java
CAPS. eGate Integrator provides core integration
including comprehensive systems connectivity,
guaranteed messaging, and robust transfor-
mation capabilities. It does this while providing
a unified environment for integration develop-
ment, deployment, monitoring, and manage-
ment. eGate Integrator is the first J2EE certified
integration platform to support native operation
of its integration technology over third-party
J2EE application servers, and includes the
industry’s first enterprise-scale, integration
change management tools, significantly
lowering total cost of ownership (TCO).
Sun SeeBeyond eInsight™ Business Process
Manager — This product layers above eGate
Integrator to enable process-driven integration.
It allows business analysts to model, test,
implement, monitor, manage, and optimize-
business processes that orchestrate the flow
of activities across any number of Web services,
systems, people, and partners. Sun SeeBeyond
eInsight Business Process Manager provides an
open, graphical modeling environment using
Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN),
and Business Process Execution Language (BPEL).
Sun SeeBeyond eVision™ Studio — Generates
interactive, composite Web pages for human
interaction with applications and business
processes without requiring any programming.
It provides a graphical page layout designer and
a rich set of GUI components. Portlets may be
created in eVision Studio and implemented
within the Sun Java System Portal Server.

Sun SeeBeyond eTL™ Integrator — Optimized
for extracting, transforming, and loading bulk
data between files and databases. It provides
an ETL development and runtime environment
that is fully integrated into the Java CAPS
platform, and specially optimized for processing
very large record sets.
Sun SeeBeyond eXchange™ Integrator —
Automating interactions with trading partners
is one of the most efficient ways to simultane-
ously lower costs, improve customer satisfaction,
and increase revenues. The challenge lies in
managing these relationships as the number
of trading partners increases and as these
relationships incorporate a variety of XML,
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), and propri-
etary formats. As the primary B2B component
within the suite, eXchange Integrator is a Web-
based, trading partner profile management
and message tracking solution that accelerates
the creation and maintenance of business
partner relationships through easy-to-use
partner profile management, extensive and
open B2B protocol support (including AS2
certification), and secure data transport.
Sun SeeBeyond eXpressway™ Integrator —
Enables even the smallest trading partners to
engage in B2B transactions. Provides a compre-
hensive implementation process, graphical
configuration wizards, and partner downloadable
connectivity software.
Sun SeeBeyond eView™ Studio — In today’s
business world, vital information is distributed
throughout the enterprise in disparate systems
such as Customer Relationship Management
(CRM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP),
billing, e-commerce, and customer support
systems. Sun SeeBeyond eView Studio uniquely

Sun SeeBeyond eBAM™ Studio — Business
Activity Monitoring (BAM) is a strategy that
identifies actionable events based on combina-
tions of real-time (or near real-time) business
events across many different applications and
other information resources. Sun SeeBeyond
eBAM Studio provides configuration wizards
that allow users to define rules for BAM and
relevant business key performance indicators
(KPIs). It also provides a runtime environment
for the execution of these rules, and displays
components for graphical depiction of changes
in the KPIs over time. The end result is a BAM
composite application with end-user dash-
boards, reports, and alerts generated without
any programming.

Connector Architecture (JCA). Sun offers more
than 80 packaged eWay Intelligent Adapters
that expose JCA and Web services-compliant
interfaces for application and business
integration. Java CAPS utilizes these Intelligent
Adapters to access disparate systems based on
distributed architectures and protocols such as
Java 2 EE, Microsoft .Net, legacy technologies
such as IBM’s Customer Information Control
System (CICS), Common Object Request Broker
Architecture (CORBA), and Microsoft’s Distributed
Component Object Model (DCOM), as well as
packaged applications from Siebel and SAP.
A subset of eWay Intelligent Adapters are
included with the suite, other adapters may
be purchased separately.
Infrastructure products
Included within Java CAPS are products from
the Java Application Platform Suite and the
Java Web Infrastructure Suite. These provide
a strong foundation of application server and

Java System Application Server — As the first
compatible implementation of the J2EE speci-
fication, the Java System Application Server
provides a foundation for delivering enterprise-
class application services and Web services. Java
CAPS uses the Application Server to run collabo-
rations for processing business logic, and eWay
adapters for communicating with external
applications. It also provides services for security,
transactions, business rules execution, and
connectivity management. The Java System
Application Server performs these services
using a unique new modular architecture
based on some of the industry’s most proven,
high-performance, and standards-compliant
components.
Java System Portal Server — Provides a user
portal for collaboration with business processes
and composite applications layered on top of
legacy and packaged applications that are
integrated using Java CAPS integration prod-
ucts. Using identity-based access and manage-
ment, the Portal Server personalizes content for
employees, partners, suppliers, and customers,
increasing productivity by determining portal
content depending on a user’s identity-provi-
sioned account. This personalized content may
come from any Java Service Request (JSR)-168
compliant portal development studio, such as
Sun SeeBeyond eVision Studio or Sun Java
Studio Creator.
Java System Directory Server Enterprise
Edition (EE) — Serves as a directory backbone
for composite application integration behind
the Java System Portal Server. It enables today’s
mission-critical enterprise applications and
large-scale extranet applications to access
consistent, accurate, and reliable identity data
for significant operational and cost efficiencies.

Language (HTML), JavaServer Pages™ (JSP), and
XML source code. All views of an application are
synchronized with the application’s source code
