ORDERING FOOD AND DRINKS AT A RESTAURANT

 What will I learn from the English lesson ordering at a restaurant?

During this English lesson, you will learn how to order a drink at a restaurant when asked by a
waiter and how to order your food. The lesson shows several examples of what a waiter or waitress
might ask you at your table and how you can reply to these questions they ask.

 Arriving at the restaurant

After arriving at the restaurant and you are seated, the first thing they will ask you is if you would
like something to drink.
 What the waiter / waitress might say to you:
-Can I get you a drink?
-Can I get a drink for you all?
-Would you like to order a drink now?
-Can I start getting your drinks started for you?
-What drinks would you like?

 How to reply to the waiter / waitress

-I will have have a coke, please.
-I'll have a glass of water, thanks.
-Still orange will be fine.
-Can I have a glass of orange juice please?

 Ordering food and why you order drinks first

The reason they do this is most that most people know what they would like to drink, but
sometimes you will want a few minutes to decide what to eat from the menu. When they have
prepared your drinks, they will bring your drinks to your table and they will take your order.

-May I take your order now?

-What would you like to order?
-Are you ready to order your food now?
-What would you like to eat today?

 Asking for more time to choose what you want

If you need more time, because you are unsure what to order, you can simply say, Can we
have a few more minutes please? They will then go away and return again after 5 minutes or so.

 When you are ready to order

Sometimes, when you are ordering food, they might have side options they will ask you if
you would like them as well.
Listen to the choices and choose one, if you are unsure, ask them to repeat it again. You can also
prepare yourself by reading the menu carefully as sometimes there are pictures of the food you are
buying to help you.
-Would you like some vegetables with your steak and chips (chips is the English name for
fries)?
-Would you like a portion of mushrooms?
-Do you want some garlic bread with your pizza?
