Tubing Compression

Tubing compression can be calculated using compression constants.

These calculations only deal with tubing movement to get the desired compression and
not necessarily actual weight applied to a packer.

Compression Constants:

1.90 EUE tubing 0.068

2.375 EUE tubing 0.39

2 875 EUE tubing 0.26

3.5 EUE tubing 0.17

2.875 10.40# Drill Pipe 0.16

3.5 13.30# Drill Pipe 0.12

4.5 16.60 Drill Pipe 0.1

How to find the length in inches of pipe compression to obtain a desired slack off weight?

The formula to calculate the required slack is as follows.

Required Slack(in)= Desired weight x Packer depth x Constant

1000 x 1000

Example:
Your packer is to be set at 8500 feet with 18,000 lbs compressing left on it.
Your tubing is 2 3/8" EUE

Required Slack(in)= 18,000 x 8,500 feet x 0.39

1000 x 1000

Required Slack(in)= 59.67 inches

A shorter version is aquired if you divide the desired weight and packer depth by 1000

Then:

Required Slack(in)= 18 x 8.5 x 0.39

Required Slack(in)= 59.67 inches
