INTRODUCTION

pg. 1
SUMMARY

The main objective of this chapter is to understand the meaning and importance of Employee
Welfare activities at CGS. Ltd. The formation of CGS Surveyors had been inspired by the idea
of perceived need of an independent specialist company to provide comprehensive range of
surveillance and supervisory services in line with modern concepts, quality assurance,
environmental protection and relying in integrity and experience.

INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Human Resource Management is the management of employees in the organization

while human resource management is sometimes referred to as a soft management skill,
effective practice within an organization. It requires a strategic focus to ensure that people’s
resources can facilitate the achievement of organizational goals. Effective human resource
management also contains an element of risk management for an organization, which, as
minimum ensures legislative compliance.

Fundamentally, human resource management assumes that employees are individuals

with varying goals and needs. Human resource should not be categorized with basic resources
(trucks, filing cabinets etc,.). Practicing good human resource management enables manager
of an organization to express their goals with specificity, increasing worker comprehension of
goals and provide the necessary recourses to promote successful accomplishment of said goals.
When human recourse management is properly, employed members of the workforce are
expressive of the goals and operating practices of the firm.

HRM is seen by practitioners in the field as a more innovative view of workplace

management than the traditional approach. Their technique makes the managers of an
enterprise to express their goals, which can be understood by the workspace. It also plays key
roles in risk reduction within the organization. The personal management is often used in a
more restricted sense to describe the activities that are necessary in the recruitment of
workforce, providing its members payroll and benefits etc. HRM is sometimes referred to
organizational management it involves several processes such as workforce planning,
recruitment, skills management, and training and development, labour relations.

The HRM functions includes a variety of activities in a organization such as whether to

use independent contractors or hire employees to fill these needs, recruiting and training the

pg. 2
employees best outcomes, ensuring that there are high performers, dealing with performance
issues, ensuring of personal and management practices to form various regulations.

Activities also include managing the approach to employee benefits and compensation,
employee records and personnel policies. Usually small business (for profit and non-profit)
must carry out these activities themselves because they can’t afford part or full time. However,
they should always ensure that employees are aware of personnel policies which conform to
current regulations. Polices are often in the form of employee manuals, which all the employees
have. We should make a note that some people distinguish between HRM (a major
management) and HRD (human resource development profession).

The HRM function and HRD profession have undergone major changes over the past
20-30 years. Many years ago, large organizations looked at the “personnel department”, mostly
to manage paper work around hiring and paying people. But in the present scenario,
organizations consider the “HR department” is playing an important role in training and helping
to manage people so that people and the organization are performing at maximum capability
in highly fulfilling manner.

Human resource management is the function within an organization that focuses on

recruitment of, management of, and providing direction for the people who work in the
organization.

Human resource management is the organizational function that deals with issues related
to people such as compensation, hiring, performance management, organization development,
safety, wellness, benefits, employee motivation, communication, administration and training.

A large part of this growth is the human resource department of these companies, who
are responsible for hiring the people with the knowledge to bring new technology into a
company to be successful in the automotive marker; these companies need highly skilled and
developed persons who are talented, and a having string partnership between management and
labour unions.

The backbone of any successful company is the HR department, and without a talented
group of people to hire, culture, and inform employees, the company is doomed for failure. The
HRM strategic management function proper management of personnel enhances the dignity by
satisfying their social needs professional significance can be done by providing healthy
working environment it promotes the teamwork in employees.

pg. 3
INTRODUCTION TO EMPLOYEE WELFARE ACTIVITIES
Welfare includes anything that is done for the comfort and improvement of employees
and is provided over and above the wages. Welfare helps in keeping the morale and motivation
of the employees high so as to retain the employees for longer duration. The welfare measures
need not be in monetary terms only but in any kind/forms.

Employee welfare includes monitoring of working conditions, creation of industrial harmony

through infrastructure for health, industrial relations and insurance against disease, accident
and unemployment for the workers and their families. Labour welfare entails all those activities
of employer, which are directed towards providing the employees with certain facilities and
services in addition to wages or salaries.

Labour welfare has the following objectives

 To provide better life and health to the workers

 To make the workers happy and satisfied
 To relieve workers from industrial fatigue and to improve intellectual, cultural and
material conditions of living of the workers.

The basic features of labour welfare measures are as follows

 Labour welfare includes various facilities, services and amenities provided to workers
for improving their health, efficiency, economic betterment and social status.
 Welfare measures are in addition to regular wages and other economic benefits
available to workers due to legal provisions and collective bargaining.
 Labour welfare schemes are flexible and ever changing. New welfare measures are
added to the existing ones from time to time.
 Welfare measures may be introduced by the employers, government, employees or by
any social or charitable agency.
 The purpose of labour welfare is to bring about the development of the whole
personality of the workers to make a better workforce.

The very logic behind providing welfare schemes is to create efficient, healthy, loyal and
satisfied labour force for the organization. The purpose of providing such facilities is to make
their work life better and also to raise their standard of living.
Welfare programs for workers focus special significance in country like India where
poverty is quite pervasive and where an employee, by himself, is generally not in a position to

pg. 4
create such welfare facilities that can make his life more pleasant. When the facilities are
provided by the employer, it helps in making the work place more congenial.

It is well known fact that many of the problems that arise in the field of IR such as
indiscipline, high employee turnover, excessive absenteeism, etc., may be caused by the mal
adjustment of the employees to work environment. Hence, the welfare activities not only
increase the comforts of employees and improve their standard of living but also help in
boosting the employees’ morale, in smooth adjustment to the environment, reducing
displeasure and friction.

It is axiomatic that a stable, well integrated and better satisfied workforce wills help in
speedier development and better utilization of resources. If the working and living conditions
are of the welfare measures, the employees will be malcontents and will contribute not towards
efficiency but towards problems.

Although the provision of better working and living conditions of earlier conceived on
humanitarian grounds, it was later realized that it leads increased productivity, better comment
to work, improved morale and industrial peace. This is the fundament al thesis that has led to
the intervention of state through legislation on employee welfare.

Employee welfare activities the productivity of organization and promote healthy

industrial relations thereby maintain industrial peace. The social evils prevalent among the
employees such as substance abuse etc., are reduced to greater extent by the welfare policies.

pg. 5
NEED FOR THE STUDY
In recent times, employees have recognized the importance of proving welfare facilities
to the workers, as workers bear a direct impact on the performance of the organization. So it is
the duty of the management to look after the welfare of their employees as their social
obligation.

Due to industrialization and liberalization, there is sheer cutthroat competition and the
mere existence of the organization is at stake. So welfare of labour has gained importance for
survival of the organization.

Employee welfare is a method of creating more satisfying working and living

conditions for employee in industry and of increasing workers sense of involvement in the
objectives of the industry. Also the welfare facilities help to promote harmonics relationship
between management and employee and they also reduce employee turnover and absenteeism,
so, keeping all those factors in view and by considering its importance for the better
performance of the organization, this study has been conducted.

pg. 6

BY: Chandra Sekhar Patro (Department of Management Studies, VITS College of Engineering,
Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India)

During the last few years the private organizations are playing an important role in the overall
development of the economy. In today’s competitive economy, the business organizations need to
focus explicitly on providing the welfare facilities to the employees as it results in their satisfaction
towards the organization and it results in improved quality of work life. The activity of nurturing
and nourishing constitutes in essence what is called “Welfare”. Welfare facilities enable the
employees to live a richer and more satisfactory life. Many organizations facilitate these welfare
activities to their employees to keep their motivation levels high. The basic purpose of employee’s
welfare is to enrich the life of employees and keep them happy and contended. A study was
undertaken in Visakhapatnam District at Andhra Pradesh, India to identify the various employee
welfare activities practiced by different private sector undertakings and its impact on the quality of
work life of the employees.

Employee welfare measures in Auto sector
BY: Poonam Salaria
Employee welfare “the efforts to make life worth living for workmen”. Employee welfare means
anything done for the comfort and improvement, Intellectual or social, of the employees over and
above the wages paid which is not a necessity of the industry.” Organizations provide welfare
facilities to their employees to keep their motivation levels high. The employee welfare schemes
can be classified into two categories viz. Statutory and non-statutory welfare schemes.

pg. 10
The statutory schemes are those schemes that are compulsory to provide by an organization as
compliance to the laws governing employee health and safety. The non-statutory schemes differ
from organization to organization and from industry to industry.
The basic purpose of employees’ welfare is to enrich the life of employees and keep them happy
and contended. Non-statutory benefits are the result of employer’s generosity, enlightenment and
philanthropic feelings. It is one of many ways for people to feel heard, cared for, to be informed and
to be involved. It is equally important to ensure that leaders and employees at all levels of the
organization are aligned to the culture of the organization, and living it.

Employee Welfare Measures in Public and Private Sectors: A Comparative Analysis
BY: Chandra Sekhar Patro
Employees play a key role in the existence and growth of any organization, therefore their welfare
is essential. During the past few years, both public sector and private sector organizations have been
contributing towards the employee & benefits and also increase their efficiency. Employees; welfare
facilities include housing facilities, free medical facilities, retirement benefits, children and adult
educational benefits, welfare measures for the employees families, loan facilities, etc. If the
organizations do not bother about the employee benefits, but expect efficient and high performance
from them, it is a mere waste. So there is utmost need for the employee’s welfare in any type of
organization. Organizations have to provide welfare facilities to their employees to keep their
motivation levels high. A comparative study was undertaken to know the satisfaction level of the
employees on the enforceability of various welfare measures in both the public and private sector
organizations. The study also throws light on impact of welfare measures.

Impact of Job Demands-Resources Model on Burnout and Employee’s Well-Being: Evidence from
the Pharmaceutical Organizations of Karachi.

BY: Muhammad Shahnawaz

This study investigates the impact of the job demands-resources model on burnout and well-being.
A sample of 352 responses is drawn from the pharmaceutical companies of Karachi. The JD-R
model includes the variables workload, autonomy, work–life imbalance, time pressure, and
feedback. The results show that only three JD-R variables (workload, autonomy and work–life
imbalance) have significant impact on burnout which in turn shows a significant negative impact on
employee’s well-being. This study makes a contribution by empirically testing the application of
the JD-R model, particularly in the context of pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan.

CONCLUSION:

 Here from the above survey in CGS ltd male percentage is more than female percentage
and in that, most of the employees completed their post-graduation.
 30% of the operation department employees respond that they are satisfied with basic
drawn facilities.
 25% of the employees are satisfied with the conservancy facilities, first aid box facilities,
rest and shelter facilities, canteen facilities, drinking water facilities and washing
facilities in the organization.
 Only 15% of the employees replied that they are satisfied and said yes to the adequacy of
the food items served in the canteen.
 Though thus organisation is providing various facilities like creches, canteen, education,
medical and other facilities to their employees the satisfied employees for this facilities
are relatively less.
 Organisation should mainly concentrate on maintenance of the existing facilities rather
than implementing new facilities this can help in retaining employees for some extent
