The area in which Henk lives was known
for high crime rates, but after the com-
munity organised itself, this rate dropped
drastically.
“Farmers and farming communities are
soft targets. They must become hard tar-
gets. To achieve this, the entire commu-
nity must be involved,” he stresses.
A criminal’s primary advantage is the ele-
ment of surprise, and this needs to be
taken away. To achieve this, Henk suggests
creating circles of defence that extend
from the farmhouse to the community.

have to be considered and systematically
addressed.
“But the first thing that needs to change
is one’s mindset,” says Henk. Four mental
states of preparedness
He explains that there are four mental
phases to being prepared: green, yellow,
orange and red. In the ‘green’ mindset,
you are relaxed and calm, as nothing is
likely to go wrong. Yellow is being aware
of what’s happening in the immediate
environment. Orange is expecting some-
thing to happen. And red is when an
incident is occurring. As a farmer, you
should always be in the orange state, and
keep your eyes open. Orange is expecting

surroundings when you enter or exit a
premises,” says Henk. Unfortunately, this is
the new reality that rural dwellers have to
accept. “Farmers often think that an attack
may happen to their neighbour’s farm, but
not on their own.”
The stereotypical roles of men and women
should also be done away with, he adds.

has funded the country's efforts to diversify
the economy through agribusiness and

Government has secured a US$30 million for
the implementa�on of the agribusiness and
trade project across the country in line with
its economic diversifica�on agenda.
Fredson Yamba, Secretary to the Treasury
said the loan is to help step up government's
diversifica�on drive through agriculture and
industrialisa�on.
Yamba said the agriculture sector is cri�cal to
the country's development and that
government will con�nue to establish strong
market linkages to raise farmer incomes and
reduce poverty at household level.
This is according to the latest economic
report issued by the Ministry of Finance.
The Interna�onal Development Associa�on
is an interna�onal financial ins�tu�on which
offers concessional loans and grants to the
world's poorest developing countries.

Dry spell nega�vely hits
maize harvest
Zambia's maize produc�on will fall to 2.39
million metric tons in the 2017-18 season
from 3.61 million tons a year earlier,
authori�es have announced.
Michael Katambo, agriculture minister

and yields for the 2017-18 season is largely
due to the prolonged dry spells that were

Dry weather and an outbreak of armyworms,
which ravaged southern Africa earlier, last

Biomass energy is produced from plants and organic wastes—
everything from crops, trees, and crop residues to manure. Crops
grown for energy could be produced in large quantities, just as
food crops are. While corn is currently the most widely used ener-
gy crop, native prairie grasses such as switchgrass or fast-growing
trees such as poplar and willow are likely to become the most
popular in the future. These perennial crops require less mainte-
nance and fewer inputs than do annual row crops such as corn, so
they are cheaper and more sustainable to produce.
Crops and biomass wastes can be converted to energy on the
farm or sold to energy companies that produce fuel for cars and

The amount of energy from the sun that reaches
Earth each day is enormous. All the energy stored
in Earth’s reserves of coal, oil, and natural gas is
equal to the energy from only 20 days of sunshine. While desert
areas such as Arizona and Nevada get more sun than other parts
of the United States, most areas receive enough sunshine to make
solar energy practical. Solar energy can be used in agriculture in
a number of ways, saving money, increasing self-reliance, and
reducing pollution. Solar energy can cut a farm’s electricity and
heating bills. Solar heat collectors can be used to dry crops and
warm homes, livestock buildings, and greenhouses. Solar water
heaters can provide hot water for dairy operations, pen cleaning,
and homes. Photovoltaics (solar electric panels) can power farm
operations and remote water pumps, lights, and electric fences.
Buildings and barns can be renovated to capture natural daylight,
instead of using electric lights. Solar power is often less expensive
than extending power lines.

What You Can Do

The options that make the most sense for you depend on your
local renewable resources, energy markets, and the types of sup-
port available from federal and state government. A growing
number of states are requiring electricity companies to provide
some power from renewable sources, creating new markets.
Other states have funds for renewable energy development. Most
now allow net metering, which makes it easier and more afford-
able for farms to generate the power they need from renewables.
And many states have companies that sell renewable energy
directly to customers.

PAC WELCOMES PRO-
POSED LAND EXPROPRI-
The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) has wel-
comed the recent proposal by the ruling
African National Congress (ANC) to expro-
priate land without compensation, saying
that it had always held the belief that land
reform in South Africa should not involve
the exchange of money.
At its 54th national conference last month,
the ANC adopted a motion to amend
Section 25 of the Constitution in order to
allow the state to expropriate land with-
out compensation, but did not set a dead-
line for when this should be achieved.
PAC president Narius Moloto said in a
statement that the contentious land
ownership issue had come back to haunt
South Africa after having been ignored for
decades.
“The crux at the heart of the PAC struggle
and political intent has always been the
return of the land to its rightful owners
and free decolonised education for the
African people with emphasis to African
children. We salute valiant patriots who
have laid down their lives and paid the
supreme sacrifice for the return of the land
to its rightful owners,” Moloto said.
“The PAC’s view is that the historic Act of
Union is the Achilles heel that was assimi-
lated with subtlety into the 1996 constitu-
tion of South Africa as the Property Clause

National Energy Globe Award

Knowledge and Training Centre (AKTC)

Globe Award for its photovoltaic ba�ery storage
system.
This solar installa�on generates 450 kWh of
energy per day and, in conjunc�on with an
intelligent storage system, it ensures that 90,000
square metres of arable land is irrigated
sustainably.
Since 2000, outstanding sustainability projects
that support the protec�on of resources, energy
efficiency and the use of renewable energies have
been dis�nguished by the Energy Globe Awards
every year.
This year over 2,000 submissions reached the
interna�onal judging panel from 180 different

The photovoltaic plant stands on the grounds of
the AKTC farm, operated by the German and
Zambian Department of Agriculture, and consists
of 260 solar panels erected in an east and
westward-facing direc�on with a total output of
86 kWp.

New Holland’s vision of the farm of the future is of a system that produces not only food, but the biomass needed to generate the energy to
run its operations and power its tractors and other machinery.

The tractor builds on the T6 methane prototype. It features a power-train that uses cutting- edge combustion technology specifically devel-
oped for agricultural applications by FPT Industrial, which has pioneered natural gas traction for more than 20 years.
The engine is significantly quieter. Carbon dioxide emissions are at least 10% lower than those of a standard diesel tractor engine, while
overall emissions are 80% lower.

Make the most of real-time machine and field data

The six-cylinder NEF engine delivers 135kW and 740Nm, the same power and torque as a standard diesel equivalent, but with up to 30% sav-
ing in running costs. With its composite layered tubular structure, the tank can carry enough fuel for a full day’s work.
The interior of the cab is ergonomically designed with all the essential controls on the integrated armrest. Additional functions are controlled
through an interactive headliner display.

properly. Ballasting the front axle involves
attaching weights to the front linkage, and

With EZ ballast wheels the weights are fitted to the wheels using
a pallet fork. They are then secured with toggle levers instead of

efficiency and soil protection.

- Zambian Breweries Smart Agriculture has
been applauded by authori�es.
Launched in 2017, the scheme now buys cassava
from over 4,000 farmers from Luapula, Northern
and Muchinga provinces of Zambia.
Under the new Chembe ini�a�ve, the project
incorporates a high-tech cellphone-based “block
chain” system designed to enhance traceability
and purchase of high-yield cassava.
The launch of the block chain comes a�er
consultants contracted by the company from
South Africa, Belgium and the United States of
America visited and engaged the farmers earlier
in the year in Mansa.
The block chain runs under a system called

BanQu, will use GPS to locate farmers, enable
farmers to be iden�fied by agents, and facilitate
training centres in the implementa�on of the
project to help small scale and emergent farmers
transform into commercial farmers.
The approved projects are expected to help small
scale farmers improve produc�vity through
empowering them with the necessary farming
skills and knowledge by engaging in high value
crops so as to increase their incomes.
The services to be provided include
mechaniza�on and modernisa�on of irriga�on,
increased storage facili�es, capacity building in
order for Zambia to export to neighboring
transac�ons and communica�ons to verify
transac�ons.
Ezekiel Sekele, Zambian Breweries director of
corporate affairs said the project intends to
increase its targeted farmers.
“This year, we are targe�ng to reach 2,000
farmers to be on the technology based pla�orm
called BanQu system.
“Currently, we have 1,000 farmers on the system
as part of the pilot project,” he explained.
Sekele also said the BanQu system – locally
referred to as Chembe cassava online buying
project – brings dignity to farmers through the
iden�fica�on of the smallholder farmers in the
supply chain, focuses on yields and skills
development and promotes financial inclusion.
“The system will help the assessment of the yield
