EL TONDERO Specifying the meaning of the term "tondero"

Precisar el significado del término «tondero» continúa
generando polémica; al lado de los que postulan que
deriva del latín «tondear», están los que sostienen que
es la deformación de «lundú», denominación de un
baile tradicional, y de «lundero» (el bailarín de
«lundú»). Con el tiempo, este baile fue perdiendo
figuras y formas hasta unificarse en «tondero» como
baile y vocablo.
La bajada de Reyes se realiza entre el 6 de enero y el
carnaval. Se hace un nacimiento, en el que colocan al
niño Jesús, a la Virgen María y a San José; la mula, el
buey y muchos adornos. El día de la bajada se tiene lista
una fuente para recibir las imágenes y el capillo. La
dueña de la bajada ve los últimos detalles y reza
exclamando: “Ay, niño Jesús. Que me vaya bien, no
como a la fulana...”Cuando ya todos los padrinos
invitados están presentes, la dueña de casa designa a
tres primeros padrinos que bajaran al niño, mientras un
grupo de niñas hacen de pastorcitas cantándole al niño

En los meses de Julio a Octubre quien ha viajado por la
panamericana habrá visto pegados a la pista colas
interminables de fieles, vestidos de morado, jóvenes y
mayores, hombres, mujeres, y mujeres con niños en
brazos; son los peregrinos que se encaminan al norte,
con destino a Paita a venerar a la Virgen de las
Mercedes "La Mechita", y luego encaminarse a la
serranía piurana, concretamente a la provincia de
Ayabaca.
