Celebrating Garba. Nandani Badhiwala (12) and Alka Manoj (12) celebrating Garba, a dance, originating from Gujarat, India, that is
preformed during the nine-day festival of Navratri. This celebration is devoted to one of the Hindu goddesses, and those who attend
typically gather together dancing in circles around her idol as a way to show their appreciation for her. Both Badhiwala and Monaj are
wearing Chaniya Choli, traditional Garba attire which consists of a three-piece dress and a colorful, embroidered blouse. Although
Badhiwala has attended this festival countless times throughout her life, this past year was Monaj’s first experience celebrating Garba.
Monaj described the atmosphere as being extremely inviting, nonetheless. “It was like one huge family. People you don’t know will come
up to you and teach you the steps! It was overall a great experience,” said Monaj. She, along with many other first timers, picked up the
steps super easily. Both Badhiwala and Monaj said that they would recommend that others, too, have a chance to experience this fun
festival.
