WHAT INCITED ME TO CHOOSE THIS TOPIC

During my 1st year of college, I have seen a lot of people indulging into alcohol which made
me a curious cat as what are the reasons behind such an indulgence. As the time passed, my
fellow mates many of whom have never consumed liquor became hard core drinkers. Instead
of having liquor occasionally, they included it in their quotidian regimen.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Field work and Survey method has been adopted in this study. A set of questions were asked
so as to derive a pattern in the consumption of the same. This questionnaire included four
questions that were given to a sample of 20 people. Random sampling method was adopted
for the same.

QUESTIONNAIRE

1. Are you a male or a female?

2. How often do you consume alcohol?
3. Why do you consume alcohol? (Peer Pressure/ Pleasure/Addiction/Parties/Other)
4. How much do you spend on alcohol every month?
5. Have you started to consume alcohol after coming to college?

ANSWERS AND ANALYSIS

In this study, it was found that the percentage of consumers who were male and female were
almost equal, with the former being slightly higher which indicates that male teenagers were
more prone to consumption of alcohol while female consumers were not very low. Out of the
20 subjects on whom the survey was conducted, 12 turned out to be male consumers while 8
were female consumers.

To the second question, 70 percent of the subjects answered that they consumed alcohol once
or twice a month, the remaining stated that they consumed alcohol once or twice a week.

Students mostly consume alcohol during parties, which they mostly attended twice a month.
The chart below indicates the reasons for which most individuals consumed alcohol.

REASONS FOR CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL

Peer Pressure
Addiction
Pleasure
Parties
Other

Students stated that they spent around Rs.1000-1200 on alcohol every month. And those who
were regular (once or twice a week) spent around Rs.3000 or more on the same.

As regard to the last question, it was found that 14 out of the 20 target group used to consume
alcohol before joining the college. On the other hand, the left 6 indulged in liquor only after
coming to college.

CONCLUSION

We see that gender is not a barrier anymore when it comes to the consumption of alcohol
among college students. The fact that males tend to drink more does not indicate a sense of
inequality, but that it could be out of choice that females don’t drink as much even though
they’re given the opportunity to. The reasons given by the subjects for the same were more
social in nature. They mostly drank during parties or out of pleasure. Most of them came
from sound economic backgrounds which meant they spent a fair amount on alcohol without
causing any financial strain to their parents.

As long as students do not get addicted to substances like alcohol, a healthy environment for
academics as well as other activities can prevail.
