to keep him from leaving.”

be to cut a deal “where he would be left in peace as
long as he doesn’t speak out against Scientology.
That way, both sides win.”
And so does Suri. “The situation is so sad, be-
cause she’s the wronged party here. Katie was the
one who decided to leave Scientology, but it’s like

“Even after all these years, it’s still pain-
ful for Gwen to talk about what happened
to John,” explains an old friend. “It’s the
kind of tragedy you never really get over.”
JUST A GIRL
In 1986, when Gwen was a fresh-faced
17-year-old with shaky self-esteem, her
brother Eric persuaded her to sing backup
for the band he was putting together with
friends. John Spence, who worked with Eric
and Gwen at a Dairy Queen in Anaheim,
Calif., took on the role of lead vocalist.
The group quickly gained a following,

thanks in large part to John, a charismatic
performer with a penchant for back-
flipping across the stage. But privately, he
was in unspeakable pain. On Dec. 21, 1987,
the 18-year-old put a pistol to his head and
shot himself in a deserted parking lot, just
days before No Doubt was set to play a gig
at the famed Roxy in L.A., which record
execs were expected to attend.
NO TURNING BACK
Shaken to the core, Gwen and her
bandmates somehow managed to do the
show — but announced it would be their
final performance. “Her grief was just
so raw, and she was really struggling to
pick up the pieces,” the source says. “But
eventually, everyone decided to keep
going, because they believed that’s what
John would have wanted.”
Still, Eric had to convince his little sister
she had the talent to fill John’s shoes.
Gwen fronted the band for six years before
realizing she wanted to start writing songs
based on her life experiences — and once
she did, No Doubt took off. Their aptly
titled 1995 breakthrough album, Tragic
Kingdom, was the first for which she
penned many of the lyrics. After launching

should have been insisting that he’s not
the only one responsible. In a bombshell
exclusive interview with O.J.’s former
bail bondsman, Star has learned that
his eldest son, Jason, may have been at
the heart of Nicole and Ron’s senseless
slayings.
Liquid courage was the catalyst for
the former football star’s long-awaited
admission. Before serving time for an
unrelated botched robbery in 2007 —
which put him behind bars for nine years
until his release last October — the Juice
drowned his sorrows in shots of rum
while staying overnight at the home of
bail bondsman Miguel Pereira. Details
behind the June 12, 1994, murder flowed
as quickly as the alcohol, and in fact,
O.J. was so intoxicated he didn’t realize
Miguel was secretly recording hours
of their conversation about the heinous
crime that riveted the nation.
“When he drinks, he [talks] about
everything,” Miguel tells Star,
explaining that O.J., now 70, was hiding
the truth to protect his son, now 47, who
is one of three children he had with his
first wife, Marguerite Whitley. “It was
O.J. and his son who did it!”

INGREDIENTS
Nonstick cooking spray
3 lb. chicken wings, tips
removed, drumettes and flats
separated
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
½ tsp. freshly ground black
pepper
2 tsp. chili powder, divided
Kosher salt
2 tbsp. plus 1½ tsp. canola oil,
divided
2 large limes
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 tbsp. grated peeled fresh
ginger (from a 2-inch knob)
3 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. reduced-sodium soy
sauce
1 lb. shishito or Padrón peppers
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat the oven to 475°F. Spray a cooling
rack with cooking spray, then set it onto
a 13 x 18-inch baking sheet. Rinse the
wings under cold water and pat dry.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the
ground ginger, cayenne, ground pepper,
1½ tsp. of the chili powder, 2 tsp. salt
and 1 tsp. of the oil. Toss the wings in
the mixture and coat evenly before
arranging them skin-side up on the rack.
Roast for 20 minutes, then rotate the
pan and reduce the oven temperature to
400°F. Continue roasting until the wings
are cooked through and crispy, about 20
to 25 minutes more.
3. Squeeze 1 tbsp. of lime juice into a
small bowl and cut the remaining limes
into wedges. Set both aside.
4. In a small saucepan, heat 1 tbsp. of oil
over medium. Add the garlic and grated
ginger and cook until the garlic begins
to sizzle, about 30 seconds. Stir in the
lime juice, honey, soy sauce, ½ tsp. salt

and remaining ½ tsp. chili powder. Bring
to a simmer and cook for 3 to 4 minutes
to slightly reduce and thicken. Set the
glaze aside.

5. In a large bowl, toss the peppers,

large skillet over medium-high heat,
cook the peppers in two or three
batches without stirring for the first
2 minutes, then turning and tossing
until blistered, 8 to 10 minutes total.
Transfer batches to a large platter.
While hot, season generously with
salt, then squeeze a wedge or two
of lime over the top.
