Final speech
Specific Purpose: The purpose of this speech is to persuade the audience believe all interns
should get paid for their work they do for whatever company they are working for
Thesis Statement: I believe as college students, working for a company and doing labor for
them should come sort of reward and for college students money would be the best reward as
all college students are in some sort of debt.
Intro:
● Why unpaid internships do not make sense
● How not paying your interns could be illegal
● Unpaid interns do not have protection against discrimination or harassment
Explain why I will be talking about these specific topics
-Transition: How people usually get a better result when paying for something then
having someone do it for free instead
Body 1:
Why unpaid internships do not make sense
● Paying interns drastically increases their chances of finding a job
● Not only is college expensive but college students are required to work all summer
and make no money
Body 2:
Not paying your interns could be illegal
UNPAID INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS:
● The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern
● The intern does not displace any of the regular employees
● The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the
activities of the intern
● Competing for jobs after school
Companies have no real interest in an interns personal or professional development. But
if they pay for that intern, they do. In a corporate environment, interns take all the risk
compared to the people that actually are working there.
Body 3:
Unpaid interns do not have protection against discrimination or harassment
● The federal courts and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission have
historically held that civil rights protections under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
do not extend or cover unpaid interns from any protection
● Unpaid workers are protected by this law but there has been no law of how unpaid
interns are protected
Conclusion:
Leave the audience guessing, as college students would you want to be facing these problems
of being in debt, not getting paid for something you should be being paid for and not being
protected by anyone you are working with?
List all these reasons in my intro one again and ask the audience if they really want to be
dealing with all these problems throughout their stressful schedules.
