E-2D: THE EYES AND
EARS OF SECURITY

The U.S. Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye program continues to go from strength to strength with the recent completion of its
aerial refueling critical design review, and deployment of the first operational squadron.

Currently onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), the E-2D is the world’s most advanced Airborne Early Warning &
Control System, representing a two-generation leap in radar sensor and enhanced network capabilities. The E-2D provides
Theater Air and Missile Defense, synthesizing information from multiple onboard and off-board sensors, making complex tactical
decisions, and disseminating actionable information to joint forces in a distributed, open-architecture environment. The E-2D
program has achieved all major milestones on or ahead of schedule since program inception in 2003. As of July 2015, 19 aircraft
have been delivered, with the next 32 aircraft under contract.

The Japan Ministry of Defense indicated in November 2014 that it selected the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye as part of its Japan Air
Self-Defense Force fleet in a recent type selection competition. In June 2015, the U.S. government approved the possible foreign
military sale to Japan for E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft and associated equipment, parts and logistical support,
acknowledging the benefits a shared system would bring to both countries.

E-2D EXPANDING THE BATTLE SPACE


E-2D transforms how the forces conduct surveillance and airborne battle management operations. A shared system would give
allied commanders a common understanding of system capabilities and would deliver industrial advantages and cost savings to
all. This system provides the warfighter expanded battlespace awareness, especially in the area of command and control tactics.
Just one E-2D system delivers battle management, air and missile defense, and numerous sensor capabilities to aid in complete
international and domestic security. E-2D utilizes onboard sensors that actively defeat clutter allowing for detection of smaller
targets at longer ranges. The APY-9 radar retains the legacy mechanical scanning capability providing uniform 360 degree radar
coverage, while also integrating Electronic Scanning into both rotating and stationary radar modes.

YEAR OF THE HAWKEYE


The U.S. Navy designated 2014 the “Year of the Hawkeye.” In late June 2014, the E-2D reached a major milestone when the U.S.
Navy awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation a $3.6 billion multi-year contract to deliver 25 E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft.

Since the first E-2D Advanced Hawkeye delivery in 2007, every aircraft has been delivered on schedule and on budget. The
Navy's E-2D Advanced Hawkeye program of record is for 75 aircraft.
