CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Problem

In human communication, much of what is expressed goes beyond simply conveying
information to others. Social and affective meaning are not covered by semantics (which focuses
on conventional/conceptual meaning only), but virtually any real-life communicative situation
contains signs which are used to express something about the speakers and their social
relationships. Semantics is the study of how languages organize and express meanings. Semantics
is concerned only with the way we relate our language to our experience. We have two kinds of
semantics, they are one deals with semantic structure and the other deals with meanings in terms of
our experience outside language. Knowing further for the theory of semantics and how to recgnize
the meaning of the words and sentences, there is one limitation of semantics is that dimensions of
meaning that are outside the content of the linguistic sign are also outside the scope of description.
Because of that, this paper will discuss about scopes of semantics. We will discuss what scopes of
semantics are.

B. Problem Formulation
1. What is the definition of semantics?
2. What are the scopes of semantics ?

C. Purpose
1. To know what the definition semantics is
2. To know what scopes of semantics are.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

A. Definition of Semantics and The Scope of Semantics

1. Definition of Semantics
Semantics is a field of linguistics concerned with the study of meaning in language.
Additionally, it is concerned with the conceptual meaning and not the associated meaning.
According to Ferdinand de Saussure the linguistic consists of a signifier and a signified; these are,
however, more strictly a sound image and a concept, both linked by a psychological "associative"
bond. Semantics deals with the literal meaning of words and the meaning of the way they are
combined, which taken together form the core of meaning, or the starting point from which the
whole meaning of a particular utterance is constructed. It is one of the interesting subjects to
discuss in linguistics. Language is abstract and so is its meaning. The concrete one is the entities.
People have different terms in expressing one thing, so it becomes arbitrary. It means, semantics
concerns with the meaning not only non-sentences meaning, such as phrase and incomplete
sentences, but also with the meaning of whole sentences. The meaning of whole sentences involve
propositions, and the notion of proposition is central to semantics.

2. The Scope of Semantics

One limitation of semantics is that dimensions of meaning that are outside the content of the
linguistic sign are also outside the scope of description or the scope of semantics. Scope is a range
of statements. We shall attempt to clear the way for the various aspects of semantics first, by
discussing and simissing two unsatisfactory views of semantics and by attempting to set out some
of the more important distinction that have to be made.
a. Naming
Naming is a communication system with on the one hand the signifier, on the other the
signified. According to Cratylus Plato, The signifier is a word in the language and the signified is
the object in the world that it “stands for, refers to, or denotes”. The words that is to say to refer
the things are called “names or label”.
Signifier : A sign’s physical form (such as a sound, printed word, or image) as distinct from its
meaning.
Signified : The meaning or idea expressed by sign, as distinct from physical form in which it is
expressed. One of the oldest views, found in Plato’s dialogue Cratylus, is that the signifier = Word
(In the language). On the other signified => Object (World around us). Words that is to say, are
‘names’ or ‘labels’ for things. 1 Naming in two terminological terms may be made :
 Expression : sequence of words with a grammatical identity.

1
Palmer, F.R. Semantics (2nd Ed.). (Cambridge University Press, New York, USA,
1981), p. 19

2
 Denotation vs. Reference : the former indicates the class of persons, things, etc., the latter
the actual persons, things, etc.
Some nouns do not denote objects in the world, e.g. Unicorn, goblin, fairy. As a solution, we
distinguish two kinds of worlds, the real and that of fairy tales. Some nouns do not refer to
physical objects at all, e.g. love, hate, inspiration. The meaning of the relevant word is by no
means the same as its denotation. E.g. the evening star and the morning star. Both denote a single
object, the planet Venus, but hardly have the same meaning. 2

b. Concepts
Two of the best-known versions are the ‘sign theory’ of de Saussure and the ‘semiotic triangle’ of
Ogden & Richards. According to Ferdinand de Saussure, as we have seen, the linguistic sign
consists of a signifier and a signified, these are, however, more strictly a sound image and a
concept, both linked by a psychological ‘associative’ bond. Linguistic sign consists of a signifier
and a signified.3 More strictly:
- Signifier = sound image
- Signified = concept
Meanwhile, according to Ogden & Richards saw the relationship as a triangle (figure 1), The
symbol is the linguistic element (word, sentence, etc), the referent the object in the world, while
thought or reference is concept.
They saw the relationship as a triangle. The "symbol" is the linguistic element. 4 The word,
sentence, etc., and the "referent" the object, etc., in the world of experience, while "thought of
reference" is concept. According to the theory there is no direct link between symbol and referent
(between language and the world) - the link is via thought of reference, the concepts of our minds. 5

c. Sense and Reference

Sense relates to the complex system of relationships that hold between the linguistics elements
and themselves (mostly the words). It is concerned only with intra-linguistic relations. Sense is
also one of such semantic relationships is sameness of meaning. We can talk about the sense, not
only of words, but also of longer expressions (phrases and sentences). In some cases, the same
word can have more than one sense. We use the term ‘word’ in the sense of ‘wordform’.(
convenient to treat anything spelled with the same sequence of letters and pronounced with the
same sequence of phonemes as being the same word). Some semanticists would regard ‘bank’ as
several different words (different entries in dictionaries). One sentence can have different senses as
well. Sense relationships are important in the study of language. Examples of related words:
1. involving sex or gender: ram/ewe, cow/bull, sow/boar

upon Thought and of The Science of Symbolism. (New York: USA, 1923), p.11
5
Ibid., p. 12

3
2. involving adult and young: duck/duckling, pig/piglet
3. involving family relationship: father/son, uncle/nephew6

Meanwhile, reference indicates that actual persons things, etc., being referred to by it in a
particular context. that cow - refers to a particular cow. It deals with with the relationship between
the linguistic elements, words, sentences, etc. and the non-linguistic world of experience. 7
a. Sense many references
b. Reference => many senses
c. Sense => no reference
d. Reference => no sense

d. The Word
The word is one of the basic units of semantics. Yet there difficulties. Not all words have the
same kind of meaning as others; some seem to have little or none. e.g. ‘to’ in Boys like to play.
Words may be divided into two types:
1. full words like sing, tree, blue.
2. form words like it, the, and.
The full words seem to have the kind of meaning that we would find in a dictionary. The form
words belong to grammar and have only grammatical meaning. Words as we know them are the
written items between which we have learnt to put spaces. But we may well wuestion whether this
is necessarily an indication of a wel-defined linguistic element. The word is not a clearly defined
linguistic unit. It is conventional, defined in terms of the spaces in the written text.

Bloomfield offered a solution by suggesting that the word is the minimum free form, the smallest
form that may occur in isolation. Bloomfield also suggested that we should look for an element
smaller than the word, a unit of meaning – the morpheme.8 However, in cases where morpheme do
not work, we use the lexeme.
Bloomfield – suggestion :
the morpheme = a unit of meaning
e.g : - berry in blackberry
e.g : loved = love + d (adore + past) X took?
 need to redefine the word: lexeme
love, loved = 2 forms of the same word
Lexeme – dictionary headings

 we can talk about meaning of words (lexemes) + meaning of grammatical elements (e.g.,
past tense). There is no consistency about the number of semantic units we may recognize in a
word. In this point we have to distinguish between two types of words. Stephen Ullman made the
distinction of these words :
1. Transparent words : are those whose meaning can be determined from the meaning of
their parts, e.g : Chopper, driver, etc.
2. Opaque words : are the words whose meaning can not be determined fromt hemeaning of
their parts, e.g : hammer, porter, spanner, etc.
e. The Sentence
We communicate with sentences and the sentence is the expression of a complete thought. The
sentence is essentially a grammatical unit, and the function of syntax is to describe the structure of
the sentence. Traditionally, sentence is an expression of a complete thought. Thus S=NP + VP
which can be a single word.
e.g : ‘Birds fly’ or one word sentence ‘Horses’. Both words and sentences have meaning. The
meaning of the sentence can be predicted from the meaning of the words it contains.
According to Lyons suggested the distinction between :
1. Sentence meaning is directly predictable from the grammatical and lexical features of a
sentence or can be called written.
2. Utterence meaning includes all various types of meaning or can be called spoken. The
part of meaning of a sentence that is not directly related to the grammatical and lexical
features, but is obtained either from associated prosodic and paralinguistic features or
from the context, linguistic and non - linguistic, in which it occur.

BAB I
PENGANTAR

A. Latar Belakang Masalah

lingkup semantik.

B. Rumusan Masalah
1. Apa definisi dari semantik?
2. Apa ruang lingkup semantik?

10
C. Tujuan
1. Untuk mengetahui apa semantik definisi
2. Untuk mengetahui apa ruang lingkup semantik .

BAB II
DISKUSI

A. Definisi Semantik dan Cakupan Semantik

1. Definisi Semantik
makna ucapan tertentu dikonstruksikan .

a. Penamaan

[4] Kata,
kalimat, dll., Dan "referensi" objek, dll., Di dunia pengalaman, sedangkan "pemikiran referensi"

Contoh kata-kata terkait:
1. melibatkan jenis kelamin atau gender: domba jantan, betina / sapi, babi betina /
babi hutan
2. melibatkan dewasa dan muda: bebek / itik, babi / anak babi
3. melibatkan hubungan keluarga: ayah / anak, paman / keponakan [6]

Sementara itu, referensi saya ndicate s bahwa orang-orang yang sebenarnya hal-hal, dll., yang
dirujuk olehnya dalam konteks tertentu . t topi sapi - mengacu pada sapi tertentu . Saya berurusan
dengan hubungan antara unsur-unsur linguistik, kata-kata, kalimat, dll. Dan dunia pengalaman
non-linguistik . [7]
a. Merasakan banyak referensi

12
b. Referensi => banyak pengertian
c. Sense => tidak ada referensi
d. Referensi => tidak masuk akal

d. Firman
Kata ini adalah salah satu unit dasar semantik. Namun ada kesulitan. Tidak semua kata
memiliki arti yang sama dengan yang lain; beberapa tampaknya memiliki sedikit atau tidak sama
sekali . e . g. 'to' in Boys suka bermain. Kata-kata dapat dibagi menjadi dua jenis:
1. kata-kata penuh seperti bernyanyi, pohon, biru.

Bloomfield - saran :
morfem yang = unit makna
misalnya : - beri dalam blackberry
mis: dicintai = cinta + d (suka + masa lalu) X mengambil?
 perlu mendefinisikan ulang kata: leksem
cinta , dicintai = 2 bentuk kata yang sama
L exeme - heading kamus
 kita dapat berbicara tentang makna kata-kata (leksem) + makna elemen-elemen gramatikal
(misalnya, past tense) . Tidak ada konsistensi tentang jumlah unit semantik yang dapat kita kenali
dalam sebuah kata . Pada titik ini kita harus membedakan antara dua jenis kata . Stephen Ullman
membuat perbedaan dari se kata:
1. Kata-kata transparan: adalah mereka yang maknanya dapat ditentukan dari arti
bagian mereka, misalnya: Chopper, driver, dll.

BAB III
KESIMPULAN

A. Kesimpulan
Semantik adalah bidang linguistik yang berkaitan dengan studi makna dalam bahasa. Selain
itu, berkaitan dengan makna konseptual dan bukan makna yang terkait. Lingkup adalah
serangkaian pernyataan. Ada beberapa bagian dalam semantik:
