As a pivotal sponsor, Michigan CAT Glomski, Charles L. Bowers School Farm
donated two lifts and a skid steer loader to
the cause, said Holly Glomski, manager of
Bowers School Farm. “Michigan CAT was the
key to the project’s success,” said Glomski.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do a quality
job in such a short period of time if we didn’t
have these pieces of equipment. Michigan
CAT was a great sponsor.”
The preservation was made possible by
Campbell Soup Company's Help Grow Your

American farms and farmers who grow the
high-quality ingredients that go into each
can of Campbell's condensed soup. The
Bowers School Farm is an integral part of the
community, serving as an agriscience
classroom to the students in the Bloomfield
Hills School District and offering plots of
land for local residents to use to raise their
own produce.
The barn on the Bowers School Farm was
selected for preservation through an online
voting competition between barns located
throughout the United States. Photos,
videos and stories of the 10 nominated
barns were featured on the program
website, www.helpgrowyoursoup.com from
October through December 2009. People
voted for their favorite story, and the Bowers
School Farm was one of the top five barns in
the online voting. More than 375,000 votes
were cast for the nominated barns.
Campbell launched the Help Grow Your

partnership with FFA to help raise awareness
of the importance of farming and to support
agriculture education. The Bowers School

2010 by Campbell and FFA.

garage to tailored control of specific areas.
Control of the lighting system is achieved
with the click of a computer mouse. “Each
customer obtains a website where they can
go online and view a map of their facility to
pinpoint maintenance problems or change
the lighting program,” said Bell.
With LimeLight, a parking deck owner can
easily change the lighting program without
changing the electrical infrastructure. “If you
wire your lighting system the conventional
way, you are committed to that conventional
way,” said Bell. “With LimeLight, you can
evolve the system. As needs change, you
can completely change your lighting.”
Plus, this pioneering system is actually
easier to install than conventional
infrastructure. “LimeLight actually simplifies
the installation because it has less circuitry,”
said Bell. “Once you bring power to the
fixture, you are finished. There are no light
switches and no redundant wiring.” Going
online and clicking the mouse replaces the
light switch, while the light fixture itself
replaces an assortment of sensors.
High-density mesh lighting is dynamic,
nimble and flexible. “There are lighting
systems in which each individual fixture has
a motion detector,” said Kiley. “The detector
only controls that one single fixture, but
with a high-density mesh system, we can
control all the fixtures automatically.”

EASY, SAFE AND SECURE

In addition, the system enhances security
with its ability to detect and report
damaged components. “The LimeLight
system will report a damaged fixture or
radio to the main server and will actually
notify the client’s cell phone,” said Kiley.
College campuses are interested in the
LimeLight system’s ability to assemble data
on acts of vandalism. The system senses and
collects motion data and reports activity
back to a computer database, said Kiley.
LimeLight alerts the parking deck owner to
any deviation from standard activity
patterns based on motion data.
Overall, LimeLight boosts security and
reduces energy consumption, offering a
system that is easy to install and easy on the
pocketbook. “LimeLight averages about a
three-year payback for installation of a new
fluorescent lighting system,” said Kiley.

Desai and Ross had a great deal on their
plates to service the needs of the casino,
both during construction and throughout
its gaming life. The second-level horizontal
expansion over East Lafayette was designed
with large 57-foot bays to avoid having
columns in the gaming areas, said Costis.
The expansion rests on two column lines –
one in the center medium of Lafayette and
the other five feet from the existing
building. “With 10 columns in each row, 10

Desai.
One core issue was the sheer extent of the
70-foot span. “We were off the charts of
traditional beam sizes,” said Costis. The size
of the span and the schedule of the job

pits actually hung from the structure above.
Ross had to squeeze its work into a tight grid
of Greektown streets. As-needed delivery
directly from truck to crane was par for the
course throughout the project. “One lane of
the road had to be kept open,” said Ross.
“But the most critical thing was keeping the
valet parking open, because that is where
the high rollers and VIP entrance is located.”
Working the midnight shift was not
uncommon to meet this mandate.
Other limitations included working
around special events in downtown Detroit.
“If there was a home Tigers game, we were
limited as to the hours we could work,” said
Ross, “because the casino typically does
more business during special events
downtown.”

A NEW SLANT ON THINGS

Next on this roster of steel tasks was the
installation of the Eclipz Lounge’s exposed
and intumescent painted tube steel, a paint
type providing a fire rating for the columns.
Housed within the expansion over Lafayette,
this glass-enclosed lounge seems to float
over the night glitter of the streets below.
The lounge splays or slopes outward, its 20-
inch round columns rising upward at an
angle and linking with horizontal members
designed to support the glass curtain wall as
it leans away from the main building.
“The tube shape can handle stresses from
all angles; it is equally strong in each
direction,” said Ross. “In terms of installation,
the tube steel frame presented some
demanding work. It had to be perfectly
placed to work with the glass on this sloped
wall.”
The tube steel frame also supported a
steel wing projecting outward from the
sloped wall and supporting the casino’s
torch. “For us, this steel projection was
actually one of the hardest and most exotic
steel features of the entire job,” said Ross.

to take advantage of every opportunity to
increase the depth, including making use of
the roof slopes. We were maximizing the
beam depths by inches to get the optimal
beam sections.”

A CITY OF STEEL
Desai/Nasr and Ross Structural Steel
skillfully pieced together and expanded this
showcase project in Greektown’s vibrant
restaurant and entertainment district. “There
were thousands of pieces of steel and
hundreds of drawings over the course of this
two-year project,” said Ross. The entire project
team certainly deserves to relax for an hour or
two in the Eclipz Lounge built on the hard
work of hundreds of firms, including Ross
Structural Steel’s 11 subcontractors.
Over the years, both Ross and Desai/Nasr
have erected a virtual city of steel, having
worked on such prominent projects as DTE
Energy’s recent campus and headquarters
expansion and One Kennedy Square at
Campus Martius.
Ross Structural Steel’s current and future
work reflects its commitment to Detroit, a
commitment begun over 50 years ago. James
G. Ross began the company in 1956, setting
up shop with only four employees and a
Quonset hut on a parcel of land near
Woodward Avenue and Seven Mile Road.
Today, Ross Structural Steel fills the same site
at 110 E. Robinwood with a sprawling
fabrication and engineering complex. The
surrounding neighborhood has clearly seen
better days, but as president of the John R
Seven Business Association and actively
involved in the Woodward Avenue Action
Association, Tom Ross is doing his part to put
this section of Detroit back together again.
The company has completed structural
steel fabrication and erection on the Second

consumers easier access to the stores they
are looking for. They can drive right up to the
door and park nearby instead of walking
through countless mall corridors. This ability
does come with a price for retailers, who can
no longer depend on a steady stream of foot
traffic that brings potential shoppers right by
their doors.
Since retailers cannot depend on a large
quantity of people walking in front of their
doors, they focus on ensuring quality traffic.
Lifestyle centers are carefully planned out to
place complementary businesses in close
proximity to each other. National retailers
have developed a keen understanding of
shopping habits, and they can often predict
with great accuracy which stores will entice

candidates for “de-malling” than others.
“I would much rather de-mall a single story
mall than a multi-level mall,” said Dennis
Bishop, PE, director of business development
for Roncelli. “Single story malls work better
from a structural standpoint. You don’t lose
as much square footage of retail compared

Even though two existing stores, totaling
175,000 square feet, were demolished, a well
thought out site plan was needed to place
618,000 square feet of retail, including a new

to spread bulk materials, such as bagged rock salt or calcium flakes,
whereas the SR-110 spreads material up to a 20-foot range and uses
a gate feed system, allowing it to handle small calcium chloride
pellets or bagged ice melters. The SR-110 includes a cable to open
and close the gate from the cab.
An electric motor drives the spreaders—meaning no engines to
fuel and no pulleys, sprockets, belts or chains to maintain. The
patented low-maintenance, dual 12-volt electric drive/maximum
torque transmission system is completely sealed within a weather-
resistant enclosure. The motor receives power from a standard 7-pin
trailer plug.
As with the entire SnowEx line, both models feature a modular,
powder-coated steel frame with a high-density, UV-protected poly
hopper. The poly construction eliminates the corrosion concerns and
regular maintenance commonly associated with steel-built
alternatives. Furthermore, the poly hopper is up to 40 percent lighter
than similar capacity steel spreaders, allowing the SR-110 or SR-210
to be easily carried and mounted.
The new spreaders come standard with a two-inch receiver
mount, but pivot, trailer, 3-point, utility and drop utility mounts are
also available. Additional options include a weather cover for
preventing moisture contamination in the hopper and a 20-foot gate
cable for vehicles that require more than the standard 10-foot cable
(SR-110 only). Power and Performance: The New Terex®
